Book excerpt: This book develops a morphodynamical approach to linguistic and sign structures as an integrated response to multilevel and interrelated problems in semiolinguistic research. More broadly, the content is linked to the realities of living speech through a connection (via the concept of diacriticity) with the Merleau-Pontian phenomenology, and beyond the formal determinations of a semiolinguistic system and its calculus. Such problems are mainly epistemological (concerning the nature and legitimate scope of semiolinguistic knowledge), empirical (concerning the observational device and the data’s composition), and theoretical (regarding the choice of a conceptual and formalized explicative frame). With regard to theory, the book introduces a morphodynamical architecture of linguistic signs and operations as a suitable mathematization of Saussurean theory. The Husserlian phenomenological signification of this formal apparatus is then established, and, from an empirical standpoint, its compatibility with neurobiological experimental results is discussed.

Through the entire twentieth century this philosophy unfolded and flourished, following stepwise the intrinsic logic and dynamism of its original project as proposed by its founder Edmund Husserl. Now its seminal ideas have been handed over to a new era. The worldwide contributors to this volume make it manifest that phenomenological inspiration knows no cultural barriers. It penetrates and invigorates not only philosophical disciplines but also most of the sectors of knowledge, transforming our way of seeing the world, our actions toward others, and our lives. Phenomenology's universal spread has, however, oftentimes diluted its original sense, even beyond recognition, and led to a weakening of its dynamics. There is at present an urgent need to retrieve the original understanding of phenomenology, to awaken its dormant forces and redirect them. This is the aim of the present book: resourcement and reinvigoration. It is meant to be not only a reference work but also a guide for research and study. To restore the authentic vision of phenomenology, we propose returning to its foundational source in Husserl's project of a `universal science', unpacking all its creative capacities. In the three parts of this work there are traced the stages of this philosophy's progressive uncovering of the grounding levels of reality: ideal structures, constitutive consciousness, the intersubjective lifeworld, and beyond. The key concepts and phases of Husserl's thought are here exfoliated. Then the thought of the movement's classical figures and of representative thinkers in succeeding generations is elucidated. Although the question of prioritizing either the level of content or that of form has often provoked controversies, most contributions here treat them as internally connected. While theoretical considerations inform many of the readings, the main interest of most articles can be described as rhetorical (in the widest sense) – given that the ancient discipline of rhetoric did not only include the study of rhetorical figures and tropes such as metaphor, irony, or satire, but also that of topoi, which were originally viewed as the ‘places’ where certain arguments could be found, but later came to represent the arguments or intellectual themes themselves. With a Kantian starting point Weyl asks: among all the infinitely many conceivable metrical spaces, which one applies to the physical world? In agreement with general relativity, Weyl acknowledges that the metric can quantitatively vary with the physical situation.
