Download or read book Wilted written by Julie Guthman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strawberries are big business in California. They are the sixth-highest-grossing crop in the state, which produces 88 percent of the nation’s favorite berry. Yet the industry is often criticized for its backbreaking labor conditions and dependence on highly toxic soil fumigants used to control fungal pathogens and other soilborne pests. In Wilted, Julie Guthman tells the story of how the strawberry industry came to rely on soil fumigants, and how that reliance reverberated throughout the rest of the fruit’s production system. The particular conditions of plants, soils, chemicals, climate, and laboring bodies that once made strawberry production so lucrative in the Golden State have now changed and become a set of related threats that jeopardize the future of the industry.

Cultivation Systems and Propagation - discusses plant architecture, replanting problems and plant propagation techniques. 3. Disease and Stress Management - deals with traditional and emerging fungal diseases, their diagnosis and modern biocontrol strategies, and biotechnological interventions for dealing with the challenges of climate change. Strawberry: Growth, Development and Diseases is written by an international team of specialists, using figures and tables to make the subject comprehensible and informative. Download or read book Strawberries written by Nathan Malone and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strawberry is among the most widely consumed fruits in the world and its cultivation is increasing worldwide. It is a microclimatic crop, which means that its behaviour may vary considerably depending on many agronomical and environmental factors such as temperature, light, moisture, soil type, etc. Strawberry production requires the input of large amounts of water because of its shallow rooting system, its high leaf area and the large water content of the fruit. This book discusses the cultivation of strawberries as well as the antioxidant properties and health benefits of consuming them.

Download or read book Strawberry written by Toshiki Asao and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-10-02 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book mainly deals with pre- and postharvest management practices of the strawberry to ensure that high-quality fruits are delivered to the consumer. The influence of climatic variables, cultural practices, harvesting techniques, and use of chemicals and other natural compounds on fruit quality are discussed. Factors affecting fruit growth and development and processes regarding maturation and biochemical changes during fruit ripening are also presented in one of the chapters of this book. Some chapters provide information regarding harvesting, storing, packaging, transporting, and also selling that affect strawberry quality greatly. Enhancement of yield and antioxidant contents in the strawberry by various natural products, including chitosan and probiotic bacterial, are also included in this book. The final chapter states that antioxidants present in strawberry fruit play a dietary role in alleviating oxidative stress in experimental liver models. This book focuses on the postharvest quality management of the strawberry and provides a useful resource to educationists, traders, and commercial strawberry growers.

Book Synopsis Temperate Fruit Crops in Warm Climates by : A. Erez
Download or read book Temperate Fruit Crops in Warm Climates written by A. Erez and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a member of the working group (WG) on "Temperate Zone Fruit Trees in the Tropics and Subtropics" of the International Society for Horticulture, I was aware of the lack of readily available information needed in many warm-climate locations where temperate fruit crops are grown. The founder of this WG, Frank Dennis, Jr. , was motivated to encourage knowledge transfer by sharing knowledge with many developing countries. We shared his drive and in presenting this book we believe we are doing a service to all persons interested in temperate fruits, but especially to those in tropical and subtropical countries, many of which are developing countries interested in growing these crops and lacking the knowledge needed. In this book, we have collected information covering a variety of different aspects of growing temperate fruit crops in warm climates. As this is the first time such an evaluation of these species has been done, interesting and novel aspects of tree development and fruiting are presented, with stress on elements like dormancy and irrigation that are not of such basic concern in the natural of the temperate zones. We are living in a transition age; horticultural studies habitat are changing and expertise such as can be found in the array of participants in this book is probably not going to be easily found in the future. I hope that this book will broaden our understanding of the fruiting Temperate Zone tree in general and of its adaptation to warm climates, in particular.

Book Synopsis Systematics and Geographic Distribution of the American Strawberry Species by : Günter Staudt
Download or read book Systematics and Geographic Distribution of the American Strawberry Species written by Günter Staudt and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1999-07-30 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this detailed investigation of the natural variation, geographical distribution, and modern taxonomy of the American Fragaria strawberry species, three species with four subspecies each and two hybrid species are recognized taxonomically. The author also discusses the phylogenetic relationships of the diploid and octoploid species and subspecies and their postpleistocene migration. The American octoploid Fragaria species are known as the ancestors of the large-fruited garden strawberries, so this study is of great horticultural interest and may contribute to the preservation of these species and their further use in strawberry breeding.
Book Synopsis The New Food Activism by : Alison Alkon
Download or read book The New Food Activism written by Alison Alkon and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "New and exciting forms of food activism are emerging as supporters of sustainable agriculture increasingly recognize the need for a broader, more strategic and more politicized food politics that engages with questions of social, racial, and economic justice. This book highlights examples of campaigns to restrict industrial agriculture's use of pesticides and other harmful technologies, struggles to improve the pay and conditions of workers throughout the food system, and alternative projects that seek to de-emphasize notions of individualism and private ownership. Grounded in over a decade of scholarly critique of food activism, this volume seeks to answer the question of "what next," inspiring scholars, students, and activists toward collective, cooperative, and oppositional struggles for change."--Provided by publisher.

Book Synopsis Strawberry Cultivation Techniques by : İlbilge Oğuz
Download or read book Strawberry Cultivation Techniques written by İlbilge Oğuz and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the berries, strawberries are the most commercially produced and consumed and their production and consumption are increasing in the world due to their enthusiastic aroma, taste, and biochemical properties. Strawberry is belonging to the genus Fragaria, from the family Rosaceae. It is indicated that the homeland of the strawberry is South America (Chile). It is well-known that people living in Asia, Europe, and America commonly use the wild F. vesca. In other regions such as Japan, North China and Manchuria, Europe-Siberia, and America there are different ecogeographic zones where alternative species are clustered. Despite its origins in the Pacific Northwest region of North America, F. ananassa is now grown all over the world. Strawberry is one of the most widespread berry species grown in almost every country including high altitudes of tropical regions, and subtropical and temperate areas. In this chapter, we aimed to offer new perspectives on the future of strawberry cultivation techniques by analyzing recent academic studies on strawberry production.
