This report traces trends and patterns in economic and non-economic aspects of inequality and examines their causes and consequences. The report also analyses the impact of structural adjustment, market reforms, globalization and privatization on economic and social indicators. The Report identifies four areas of particular importance. First, worldwide asymmetries deriving from globalization need to be redressed. Second, the goal of reducing inequality must be explicitly incorporated in policies and programmes aimed at poverty reduction. Third, priority must be given to expanding and improving opportunities for employment. Finally, social integration and cohesion must be promoted as key to development, peace and security.
