Book Synopsis Perspectives in Flow Control and Optimization by : Max D. Gunzburger
Download or read book Perspectives in Flow Control and Optimization written by Max D. Gunzburger and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flow control and optimization has been an important part of experimental flow science throughout the last century. As research in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) matured, CFD codes were routinely used for the simulation of fluid flows. Subsequently, mathematicians and engineers began examining the use of CFD algorithms and codes for optimization and control problems for fluid flows. Perspectives in Flow Control and Optimization presents flow control and optimization as a subdiscipline of computational mathematics and computational engineering. It introduces the development and analysis of several approaches for solving flow control and optimization problems through the use of modern CFD and optimization methods. The author discusses many of the issues that arise in the practical implementation of algorithms for flow control and optimization, and provides the reader with a clear idea of what types of flow control and optimization problems can be solved, how to develop effective algorithms for solving such problems, and potential problems in implementing the algorithms. Audience: this book is written for both those new to the field of control and optimization as well as experienced practitioners, including engineers, applied mathematicians, and scientists interested in computational methods for flow control and optimization. Readers with a solid background in calculus and only slight familiarity with partial differential equations should find the book easy to understand. Knowledge of fluid mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, calculus of variations, control theory or optimization is beneficial, but is not essential, to comprehend the bulk of the presentation. Only Chapter 6 requires a substantially higher level of mathematical knowledge, most notably in the areas of functional analysis, numerical analysis, and partial differential equations.

Book Synopsis Fundamental Physics and Practical Applications of Electromagnetic Local Flow Control in High Speed Flows by :
Download or read book Fundamental Physics and Practical Applications of Electromagnetic Local Flow Control in High Speed Flows written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report summarizes two major achievements in Electromagnetic Local Flow Control (ELFC) in high speed flows. The first achievement is the demonstration of the effective and efficient reduction of pressure drag on a blunt cylinder in supersonic flow using pulsed heated filaments. Numerical simulations indicate drag reduction up to 30% with power requirements typically 1% of the power saved through drag reduction. No adverse effect on heat transfer to the blunt cylinder is observed. Indeed, a 30% reduction in heat transfer is observed for one configuration. The second achievement is the development and application of a fully 3-D, time-accurate, viscous gas dynamic code for simulation of microwave energy discharge in air (including full thermochemistry) and the interaction of the microwave-generated plasma with a blunt body in supersonic flow. Comparison of computed and experimental surface pressure show good agreement.

Book Synopsis Advances in Critical Flow Dynamics Involving Moving/Deformable Structures with Design Applications by : Marianna Braza
Download or read book Advances in Critical Flow Dynamics Involving Moving/Deformable Structures with Design Applications written by Marianna Braza and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-10 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on the latest knowledge concerning critical phenomena arising in fluid-structure interaction due to movement and/or deformation of bodies. The focus of the book is on reporting progress in understanding turbulence and flow control to improve aerodynamic / hydrodynamic performance by reducing drag, increasing lift or thrust and reducing noise under critical conditions that may result in massive separation, strong vortex dynamics, amplification of harmful instabilities (flutter, buffet), and flow -induced vibrations. Theory together with large-scale simulations and experiments have revealed new features of turbulent flow in the boundary layer over bodies and in thin shear layers immediately downstream of separation. New insights into turbulent flow interacting with actively deformable structures, leading to new ways of adapting and controlling the body shape and vibrations to respond to these critical conditions, are investigated. The book covers new features of turbulent flows in boundary layers over wings and in shear layers immediately downstream: studies of natural and artificially generated fluctuations; reduction of noise and drag; and electromechanical conversion topics. Smart actuators as well as how smart designs lead to considerable benefits compared with conventional methods are also extensively discussed. Based on contributions presented at the IUTAM Symposium “Critical Flow Dynamics involving Moving/Deformable Structures with Design applications”, held in June 18-22, 2018, in Santorini, Greece, the book provides readers with extensive information about current theories, methods and challenges in flow and turbulence control, and practical knowledge about how to use this information together with smart and bio-inspired design tools to improve aerodynamic and hydrodynamic design and safety.
