Book excerpt: Classical Heritage and European Identities examines how the heritages of classical antiquity have been used to construct European identities, and especially the concept of citizenship, in Denmark from the eighteenth century to the present day. It implements a critical historiographical perspective in line with recent work on the "reception" of classical antiquity that has stressed the dialectic relationship between past, present and future. Arguing that the continuous employment and appropriation of lassical heritages in the Danish context constitutes an interesting case of an imagined geography that is simultaneously based on both national and European identities, the book shows how Denmark’s imagined geography is naturalized through very distinctive uses of classical heritages within the educational and heritage sectors. It does so by exploring three significant and interrelated arenas where the heritages of classical antiquity are used to shape Danes as European citizens. Together, these three cases emphasize different but interconnected ways in which classical heritages are being put to use in order to construct Denmark’s own distinctive national identity within Europe. Finally, the book also sheds light on some of the challenges that face unified and homogenous conceptions of European heritage and identity, as well as the notion of the "classical" itself. Classical Heritage and European Identities is the first English-language monograph to situate the Danish case within the wider European context. As such, the book should be essential reading for researchers and students engaged in the study of heritage and museums, classics, education and modern European history.

The foundation occurred during an important period in early Greek history when trade and movement of peoples along the Gulf intensified with a resulting strong pull to the coast. Well-preserved stratigraphies date the foundation to the early seventh century BC and testify to a flourishing settlement in the sixth century lasting till the early fifth century BC when the site was temporarily given up. Walls and roads follow a rectilinear layout. A broad spectre of pottery shapes and wares attest to innovative local and regional workshops already from the onset of the settlement. Alongside the pottery, tools for complex textile manufacture were found in all houses, among which were many small, pyramidal loom weights and spools. These findings indicated a high degree of experimental weaving techniques and demonstrated how the courtyard house, as a new house model, was particularly well suited to accommodate this manufacture, probably mantels. The results therefore offer important new evidence on relations between gender behaviour and Greek houses. The catalogue is richly illustrated with profile drawings, plans, black-and- white and colour photos and accompanied by discussions of the material.

This publication celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Collection of Classical and Near Eastern Antiquities in the National Museum of Denmark. The Collection traces its roots back to the Royal Kunstkammer founded by King Frederik III around 1650 and to the private archaeological collection of King Christian VIII. On his death the two collections were joined and in 1853 a new one emerged, now named Cabinet of Antiquities, and open to the public -- a collection which over the ensuing 150 years has been constantly enlarged and enriched. In eight articles, various aspects of the history of the collection are tackled -- the authors taking their cues from highlights and humble objects alike: two marble heads from Athens, a mummy from Egypt, and a seemingly insignificant Syrian amulet which, nonetheless, can tell an intriguing tale from the past. We meet a largely forgotten 19th century Danish consul in Tunisia with an eye for antiquities, and accompany Danish archaeologists on expeditions to Hama in Syria and Luristan in Iran. New research in Corinthian pottery is presented and the reader is introduced to the principles employed in establishing the Greek and Roman galleries that were opened in 1994 together with plans for a new Cypriot gallery opened in 2002. The Collection of Classical and Near Eastern Antiquities encompasses not only the story of ancient cultures but is, in its own right, part of the history of Denmark as it unfolds the story of the many relations between Denmark and the Mediterranean countries over the centuries.

Book excerpt: A lucrative trade in Athenian pottery flourished from the early sixth until the late fifth century B.C.E., finding an eager market in Etruria. Most studies of these painted vases focus on the artistry and worldview of the Greeks who made them, but Sheramy D. Bundrick shifts attention to their Etruscan customers, ancient trade networks, and archaeological contexts. Thousands of Greek painted vases have emerged from excavations of tombs, sanctuaries, and settlements throughout Etruria, from southern coastal centers to northern communities in the Po Valley. Using documented archaeological assemblages, especially from tombs in southern Etruria, Bundrick challenges the widely held assumption that Etruscans were hellenized through Greek imports. She marshals evidence to show that Etruscan consumers purposefully selected figured pottery that harmonized with their own local needs and customs, so much so that the vases are better described as etruscanized. Athenian ceramic workers, she contends, learned from traders which shapes and imagery sold best to the Etruscans and employed a variety of strategies to maximize artistry, output, and profit.
