Book excerpt: Derek McKellier has never been a man of direction. With his laid-back and sometimes daring attitude, he roams through the vastness of space, isolating himself from others. Although Derek constantly cheats death by tormenting a group of spacefaring pirates, he does whatever it takes to stay alive. A loner way of life is all he's known, until a wayward incident acquaints him to the captain and senior officers of a very statutory starship. Their influences introduce a new world of emotions Derek has never truly felt before, but just when he thinks his life is taking a turn for the better, Derek discovers that his daredevil way of life may come back to hurt him...

Download or read book Rebel Politics written by David Brenner and published by Southeast Asia Program Publications. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rebel Politics analyzes the changing dynamics of the civil war in Myanmar, one of the most entrenched armed conflicts in the world. Since 2011, a national peace process has gone hand-in-hand with escalating ethnic conflict. The Karen National Union (KNU), previously known for its uncompromising stance against the central government of Myanmar, became a leader in the peace process after it signed a ceasefire in 2012. Meanwhile, the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) returned to the trenches in 2011 after its own seventeen-year-long ceasefire broke down. To understand these puzzling changes, Brenner conducted ethnographic fieldwork among the KNU and KIO, analyzing the relations between rebel leaders, their rank-and-file, and local communities in the context of wider political and geopolitical transformations. Drawing on Political Sociology, Rebel Politics explains how revolutionary elites capture and lose legitimacy within their own movements and how these internal contestations drive the strategies of rebellion in unforeseen ways. Brenner presents a novel perspective that contributes to our understanding of contemporary politics in Southeast Asia, and to the study of conflict, peace and security, by highlighting the hidden social dynamics and everyday practices of political violence, ethnic conflict, rebel governance and borderland politics.

Book Synopsis Rebellion Now and Forever by : Terry Rugeley
Download or read book Rebellion Now and Forever written by Terry Rugeley and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-19 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the origins, process, and consequences of forty years of nearly continual political violence in southeastern Mexico. Rather than recounting the well-worn narrative of the Caste War, it focuses instead on how four decades of violence helped shape social and political institutions of the Mexican southeast. Rebellion Now and Forever looks at Yucatán's famous Caste War from the perspective of the vast majority of Hispanics and Maya peasants who did not join in the great ethnic rebellion of 1847. It shows how the history of nonrebel territory was as dramatic and as violent as the front lines of the Caste War, and of greater significance for the larger evolution of Mexican society. The work explores political violence not merely as a method and process, but also as a molder of subsequent institutions and practices.

Book excerpt: As the United States struggled to survive the recent recession, China quietly acquired a vast amount of U.S. Treasury bills and bonds. With China now holding so much of America’s debt, currency valuation issues have already caused tensions between the two superpowers. Couple this with Iran’s efforts to develop into a nuclear power in an area that lacks political stability, and the United States and China could soon find themselves in a global power tug-of-war. Power, National Security, and Transformational Global Events: Challenges Confronting America, China, and Iran explores the shifts in power that have initiated major transformational events around the world. Expert contributors identify the major challenges that now confront America as a result of these transformations. Filled with authoritative insights into how current and emerging situations will impact the United States, the book illustrates the policy problems and limited choices facing America. It also: Describes the information technology and social media tools that were instrumental in the Arab revolution Provides the insights of experts from the Intelligence Community on emerging issues that will soon impact America Illustrates the policy problems involved in addressing the challenges with Iran Explores the rapid growth of China’s economic wealth and military power This much-needed reference describes and analyzes the emergence of cyber power and its capabilities for cyber attack, cyber warfare, and cyber defense.
