Book excerpt: First published in English in 1965, The Reawakening is Primo Levi's bestselling sequel to his classic memoir of the Holocaust, Survival in Auschwitz. The inspiring story of Levi's liberation from the German death camp in January 1945 by the Red Army, it tells of his strange and eventful journey home to Italy by way of the Soviet Union, Hungary, and Romania. Levi's railway travels take him through bombed-out cities and transit camps, with keen insight he describes the former prisoners and Russian soldiers he encounters along the way. An extraordinary account of faith, hope, and undying courage, The Reawakening was praised by Irving Howe as a remarkable feat of literary craft.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the pages of this book is life-giving water for a church and a people that often don’t know they’re thirsty. Despite technological, theological, and sociological advances and the ability and platform to spread the Gospel like never before, the church of Jesus Christ continues to lose effectiveness and become divided over theological and doctrinal issues. This is because it has lost its identity, an identity characterized by God’s love, power, joy, purpose, and meaning, an identity reflecting God’s glory to a fallen world. The question is, how do we get back to the place where God intended us to be? Although God wants us to move on to maturity, sometimes we have to lay again the foundation. ReAwakening: The Power of the Gospel reminds us of the basics. With so many Christians fighting over correct doctrine, this book presents our Christian doctrinal foundation. Why are we here? What is our identity? What is the Good News? What do we need to do to be saved? Pastor and author Dr. Bobby Wagner answers all of those questions and more. ReAwakening clearly attempts to present all the theological and doctrinal truths surrounding the Gospel.

Although he only published a single printed map, Jefferson was also regarded as a geographer, due to his interest in and use of geographic and cartographic materials during his many careers—attorney and regional and national politician—and in his twilight years at Monticello. For roughly twenty-five years he was involved with almost all elements of the urban planning of Washington, D.C., and his surveying skills were reflected in his architectural drawings, including of the iconic grounds of the University of Virginia. He understood maps not only as valuable for planning but as essential for future land claims and development, exploration and navigation, and continental commercial enterprise. In The True Geography of Our Country: Jefferson’s Cartographic Vision,Joel Kovarsky charts the importance of geography and maps as foundational for Jefferson’s lifelong pursuits. Although the world had already seen the Age of Exploration and the great sea voyages of Captain James Cook, Jefferson lived in a time when geography was of primary importance, prefiguring the rapid specializations of the mid- to late-nineteenth-century world. In his exploration of Jefferson’s passion for geography, including how our third president was a key participant in planning the route followed and regions explored by Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery, as well as other expeditions into the vast expanse of the Louisiana Purchase, Kovarsky reveals how geographical knowledge was essential to the manifold interests of the Sage of Monticello.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not "The Secret." The true "secret" is there is no "secret", only a "truth". Anyone who has seen the film "The Matrix" understands "Matrix Philosophy". Do you choose the red pill, which will answer "The Question", or do you choose the blue pill which allows life to simply carry on as before? To paraphrase the words of Morpheus from the film, "All I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more." And what is the truth? It encompasses the meaning and the purpose of life and embraces an understanding of a greater reality. One would think that everyone would want to know truth. But it is not quite so simple. We can't all quite handle truth. But that's life! I have no desire, nor am I attempting to convert, proselytize, or convince anyone of anything that does not feel true to them. So, I share my story of love and discovery and hope that it finds resonance in your hearts. I ask your willing suspension of belief or disbelief. For now, make any human image you may wish, or imagine any force that you would hope God to be. I made a leap of faith and as a result achieved a sense of freedom that I have never before experienced. That leap was to believe the reality I experienced and not to doubt the truth of what happened. If God tells you the meaning and purpose of life, it leaves you a changed person. My "burning bush" moment left me a changed person-I knew bliss. I do not claim any special powers or abilities. Who I AM speaks only to a level of awareness. I do find myself in the mold of others from the historical past; I am connected (spiritually) to a greater reality. Even with this new level of awareness, I can still find myself trapped in a nexus of disillusionment and disappointment, displaced from the moment-a part of being human. Yet that fleeting moment of knowing, having felt the touch of God upon my soul, allows me to enter the state of Grace which I now touch every day. None of this will negate the potential ambushes that can overtake one's life in a flash, no matter which road is chosen. Nor is it any sort of guarantee of wealth, health, social status, or the usual measures of success. All roads lead to the same destination. The train each travels is set on its course. While I have neither the desire nor the ability to change anyone's journey, I do believe I can offer a travel upgrade. It is possible to travel in greater comfort in a more luxurious carriage, with larger windows that give a greater view of the beautiful vistas along the way.

Book excerpt: ""The key questions for today's managers and leaders"", writes Jack Hawley, ""are no longer issues of task and structure, but questions of spirit....not religion, spirit"". We all yearn for spiritually rooted qualities at work - integrity, character, inspiration, belief, and even reverence - qualities that are key factors in an enterprise's success. Hawley provides a direct response to the widespread desire for spirituality at work, offering a practical vision of work permeated with ""dharma"" - deep integrity fusing spirit, character, human values, and decency. He shows how successful leaders or managers who are motivated by a spiritual vision liberate the best in people, and explains why all leadership is spiritual. He provides many examples of people actually living by their inner truth at work, and shows how such people can create an improved place to work and a better life as well as a more resilient, effective organization that is prepared to meet the challenges of the present and future.

Book excerpt: The human body contains hundreds of concentrated energy center sites, which are referred to as chakras. In Sanskrit chakra signifies wheel. The chakras are centers of force, situated in the etheric body, through which we receive, transmit and process life energies. The chakras are the network through which the spirit and its 3 vehicles (physical, emotional and mental bodies) interact, integrating them all into one complete system. Although there are hundreds of chakras in the body, there are 7 major energy centers, corresponding to distinct aspects of our consciousness. Each chakra possesses its own individual characteristics and functions. As each chakra has a certain vibration, each associated organ, gland and color vibrates at a certain frequency too. Each chakra has a corresponding relationship to the organs, glands, colors and food. If a gland or organ is not functioning well, it hinders the corresponding chakra experience and vice-versa.

Book excerpt: Transformation of public education requires the reawakening of the sleeping giant in the room: the learners. Students, teachers, and principals must develop a learner-centric, standards-driven school. Reawakening the Learner is a guide to creating just such an environment. Continua describe the journey of teachers, teacher leaders, and principals in partnering with learners. Adult-driven routines must be replaced with learner-centric practices. All stakeholders must identify a common moral purpose, create a culture that supports change, and commit to the learner improvement cycle. Common moral purpose must be driven by beliefs and behaviors that support all learners to proficiency. School culture must be developed to be ready for change, have enough trust in one another to doubt current practices, and develop collective efficacy. This new culture will support the components of the learner improvement cycle (assessment, evaluation, planning, and learning) by involving the learners during each step of the cycle. The authors call for national dialogue with educational experts to reinvent public education, where all students are given enough time and support to reach proficiency on the standards.

Book excerpt: A core institution in the human endeavor—the public research university—is in transition. As U.S. public universities adapt to a multi-decadal decline in public funding, they risk losing their essential character as a generator, evaluator, and archivist of ideas and as a wellspring of tomorrow’s intellectual, economic, and political leaders. This book explores the core interdependent and coevolving structures of the research university: its physical domain (buildings, libraries, classrooms), administration (governance and funding), and intellectual structures (curricula and degree programs). It searches the U.S. history of the public research university to identify its essential qualities, and generates recommendations that identify the crucial roles of university administration, state government and federal government.

This book was released on 2006-12-07 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge History of Christianity offers a comprehensive chronological account of the development of Christianity in all its aspects - theological, intellectual, social, political, regional, global - from its beginnings to the present day. Each volume makes a substantial contribution in its own right to the scholarship of its period and the complete History constitutes a major work of academic reference. Far from being merely a history of Western European Christianity and its offshoots, the History aims to provide a global perspective. Eastern and Coptic Christianity are given full consideration from the early period onwards, and later, African, Far Eastern, New World, South Asian and other non-European developments in Christianity receive proper coverage. The volumes cover popular piety and non-formal expressions of Christian faith and treat the sociology of Christian formation, worship and devotion in a broad cultural context. The question of relations between Christianity and other major faiths is also kept in sight throughout. The History will provide an invaluable resource for scholars and students alike. How did Christianity fare during the tumultuous period in world history from 1660 to 1815? This volume examines issues of church, state, society and Christian life, in Europe and in the wider world. It explores the intellectual and political movements that challenged Christianity: from the rise of science and the Enlightenment to the French Revolution with its state-supported programme of de-Christianisation. It also considers the movements of Christian renewal and reawakening during this period, and Christianity's encounters with world religions in colonial and missionary settings. Book jacket.
