Book excerpt: Suffering is something that affects everyone. For many, it can be a stumbling block to faith in God and the catalyst to an unhappy life. But it doesn't have to be this way. In fact, it can be the catalyst to something greater: union with Christ. Dr. Bob Schuchts, founder and president of the John Paul II Healing Center in Tallahassee, Florida, seeks to answer these difficult questions in Real Suffering: Finding Hope and Healing in the Trials of Life. Drawing on decades of experience as a marriage and family therapist, as well as on his own personal crosses, Dr. Schuchts examines the complex nature of suffering. Dissecting physical pain, emotional loss, and spiritual guilt, he shows the underlying purpose of our sorrows and helps us see how they can be a means of drawing closer to God. Whether you are in the midst of your own trials or accompanying someone you love who is in pain, Dr. Schuchts will help you see that Christ is always present in the heart of your agony.
Book Synopsis Suffering Made Real by : M. Susan Lindee
Download or read book Suffering Made Real written by M. Susan Lindee and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-10-10 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August of 1945 unleashed a force as mysterious as it was deadly—radioactivity. In 1946, the United States government created the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) to serve as a permanent agency in Japan with the official mission of studying the medical effects of radiation on the survivors. The next ten years saw the ABCC's most intensive research on the genetic effects of radiation, and up until 1974 the ABCC scientists published papers on the effects of radiation on aging, life span, fertility, and disease. Suffering Made Real is the first comprehensive history of the ABCC's research on how radiation affected the survivors of the atomic bomb. Arguing that Cold War politics and cultural values fundamentally shaped the work of the ABCC, M. Susan Lindee tells the compelling story of a project that raised disturbing questions about the ethical implications of using human subjects in scientific research. How did the politics of the emerging Cold War affect the scientists' biomedical research and findings? How did the ABCC document and publicly present the effects of radiation? Why did the ABCC refuse to provide medical treatment to the survivors? Through a detailed examination of ABCC policies, archival materials, the minutes of committee meetings, newspaper accounts, and interviews with ABCC scientists, Lindee explores how political and cultural interests were reflected in the day-to-day operations of this controversial research program. Set against a period of conflicting views of nuclear weapons and nuclear power, Suffering Made Real follows the course of a politically charged research program and reveals in detail how politics and cultural values can shape the conduct, results, and uses of science.

Book Synopsis More Beautiful Than Before by : Steve Leder
Download or read book More Beautiful Than Before written by Steve Leder and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every one of us sooner or later walks through hell. The hell of being hurt, the hell of hurting another. The hell of cancer, the hell of a reluctant, thunking shovel full of earth upon the casket of someone we deeply loved, the hell of betrayal, the hell of betraying, the hell of divorce, the hell of a kid in trouble . . . the hell of knowing that this year, like any year, may be our last. We all walk through hell. The point is not to come out empty-handed. . . . There is real and profound power in the suffering we endure if we transform that suffering into a more authentic, meaningful life. In the spirit of such classics as When Bad Things Happen to Good People, A Grief Observed, and When Things Fall Apart, More Beautiful Than Before: How Suffering Transforms Us examines the many ways we can transform physical, psychological, or emotional pain into a more beautiful and meaningful life. As the leader of Wilshire Boulevard Temple, one of America’s largest and most important congregations, located in the heart of Los Angeles, Rabbi Leder has witnessed a lot of pain: "It’s my phone that rings when people’s bodies or lives fall apart," he writes. "The couch in my office is often drenched with tears." After 27 years of listening, comforting, and holding so many who suffered, he thought he understood pain and its challenges—but when it struck hard in his own life and brought him to his knees, a new understanding unfolded before him as he felt pain’s profound effects on his body, spirit, and soul. In this elegantly concise, beautifully written, and deeply inspiring book, Rabbi Leder guides us through pain’s stages of surviving, healing, and growing to help us all find meaning in our suffering. Drawing on his experience as a spiritual leader, the wisdom of ancient traditions, modern science, and stories from his own life and others’, he shows us that when we must endure, we can, and that there is a path for each of us that leads from pain to wisdom. "Pain cracks us open," he writes. "It breaks us. But in the breaking, there is a new kind of wholeness." This powerful book will inspire in us all a life worthy of our suffering; a life gentler, wiser, and more beautiful than before.

Book Synopsis The Virtual Body of Christ in a Suffering World by : Deanna A. Thompson
Download or read book The Virtual Body of Christ in a Suffering World written by Deanna A. Thompson and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a wired world where 24/7 digital connectivity is increasingly the norm. Christian megachurch communities often embrace this reality wholeheartedly while more traditional churches often seem hesitant and overwhelmed by the need for an interactive website, a Facebook page and a twitter feed. This book accepts digital connectivity as our reality, but presents a vision of how faith communities can utilize technology to better be the body of Christ to those who are hurting while also helping followers of Christ think critically about the limits of our digital attachments. This book begins with a conversion story of a non-cell phone owning, non-Facebook using religion professor judgmental of the ability of digital tools to enhance relationships. A stage IV cancer diagnosis later, in the midst of being held up by virtual communities of support, a conversion occurs: this religion professor benefits in embodied ways from virtual sources and wants to convert others to the reality that the body of Christ can and does exist virtually and makes embodied difference in the lives of those who are hurting. The book neither uncritically embraces nor rejects the constant digital connectivity present in our lives. Rather it calls on the church to a) recognize ways in which digital social networks already enact the virtual body of Christ; b) tap into and expand how Christ is being experienced virtually; c) embrace thoughtfully the material effects of our new augmented reality, and c) influence utilization of technology that minimizes distraction and maximizes attentiveness toward God and the world God loves.

Book Synopsis Why Is There Suffering? by : Bethany N. Sollereder
Download or read book Why Is There Suffering? written by Bethany N. Sollereder and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Your journey begins. The road before you is smooth and straight. You walk for some time, recalling your experiences that call into question the deep realities of life. Up ahead, you can see the road branching in three directions. . . In Why Is There Suffering? you, reader, control the route you take through its "choose-your-own-path" chapters, asking questions and exploring different theological possibilities on the big topics of: God's existence God's nature The nature of suffering Evil Pain Final destiny Taking an intentionally light-hearted approach to a heavy topic this book presents an illustrative introduction to the problem of suffering and the most commonly offered responses to it. Along the road, you'll face multiple possibilities regarding suffering and its theological explanations, and you'll make choices about which one you find most plausible, skipping to that section of the book. Each decision you make leads to further complexities and new choices that reveal how theological beliefs lead to certain conclusions. This book does not offer final answers. Instead, it introduces the "theological" possibilities—both Christian and non-Christian—that you can explore and wrestle with to make informed decisions about your beliefs and clearly see the road you've taken to reach such beliefs. You are, of course, in control of the paths you take through these pages. You decide which explanations work. You can always go back and see what would change if you'd taken a different path. And, who knows. . .you may find that certain pathways resonate with your experiences in ways you didn't expect.
Book Synopsis Suffering Is Never for Nothing by : Elisabeth Elliot
Download or read book Suffering Is Never for Nothing written by Elisabeth Elliot and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hard times come for all in life, with no real explanation. When we walk through suffering, it has the potential to devastate and destroy, or to be the gateway to gratitude and joy. Elisabeth Elliot was no stranger to suffering. Her first husband, Jim, was murdered by the Waoroni people in Ecuador moments after he arrived in hopes of sharing the gospel. Her second husband was lost to cancer. Yet, it was in her deepest suffering that she learned the deepest lessons about God. Why doesn’t God do something about suffering? He has, He did, He is, and He will. Suffering and love are inexplicably linked, as God’s love for His people is evidenced in His sending Jesus to carry our sins, griefs, and sufferings on the cross, sacrificially taking what was not His on Himself so that we would not be required to carry it. He has walked the ultimate path of suffering, and He has won victory on our behalf. This truth led Elisabeth to say, “Whatever is in the cup that God is offering to me, whether it be pain and sorrow and suffering and grief along with the many more joys, I’m willing to take it because I trust Him.” Because suffering is never for nothing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • An "extraordinary ... profoundly moving" history (The New York Times Book Review) of the American Civil War that reveals the ways that death on such a scale changed not only individual lives but the life of the nation. An estiated 750,000 soldiers lost their lives in the American Civil War. An equivalent proportion of today's population would be seven and a half million. In This Republic of Suffering, Drew Gilpin Faust describes how the survivors managed on a practical level and how a deeply religious culture struggled to reconcile the unprecedented carnage with its belief in a benevolent God. Throughout, the voices of soldiers and their families, of statesmen, generals, preachers, poets, surgeons, nurses, northerners and southerners come together to give us a vivid understanding of the Civil War's most fundamental and widely shared reality. With a new introduction by the author, and a new foreword by Mike Mullen, 17th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Download or read book Why Suffering? written by Ravi Zacharias and published by FaithWords. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would a loving and powerful God allow so much pain and suffering? In Why Suffering? Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale carefully walk you through a variety of responses that considered together provide a clear, comprehensive, and convincing answer. Responses like: Where there is the possibility of love, there has to be the reality of freedom, and therefore the possibility of pain. Wishing God had made a different world is to wish yourself out of existence. The cross is the key to a compelling and rational explanation for trusting in God in the face of suffering. In comparison with other world religions, the Christian response is highly distinctive. The reality of evil only makes sense in light of the reality of divine goodness. Relational knowledge about God takes the argument beyond reason to the presence of God amidst suffering. God's decision to allow temporal suffering is understandable when viewed from an eternal perspective. Divine goodness shows how to conquer not in spite of, but even through suffering. Here is a book written with great respect for the complexity of the issue, recognizing that some who read it will be in the trenches of deep suffering themselves and others questioning the very existence of a loving God. Why Suffering? provides an answer to the problem of pain and suffering with emotional sensitivity and intellectual integrity.
Book Synopsis The Real Cause of Suffering, Mental Health Crisis Globally by : Caroline Ann Kennedy
Download or read book The Real Cause of Suffering, Mental Health Crisis Globally written by Caroline Ann Kennedy and published by Caroline Ann Kennedy. This book was released on 2024-07-04 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of people are facing mental health crisis today and are adversely affected by the harmful medication that is prescribed to them. Millions go to an early grave due to the disturbing side effects of these treatments and then others are simply cast away by society to become invalids in their families. This is not the reality of what the destiny of life holds for the millions around the world who are adversely affected by mental health issues which are further triggered by anxiety and depression. There are also many other types of mental health crisis which affect older people such as Alzheimer's and Dementia Parkinson and Tardive Dyskinesia. These illnesses are wrongly diagnosed. In most cases they are actually the symptomatic reaction of what the intelligence of the body naturally wants to be evolved to. The harmful medications provided only destroy the natural flow of the wisdom of the body and can even cripple the mind. Simple healing modalities can be given to simplify the sympathetic system and then expand the mind to high states of awareness and wisdom. It is the prevailing wisdom of the Universal field that wants to get diverted to the consciousness of humanity. Even the things that are affecting children like ADHD and autism can be softened with simple modalities like songs using the Language of Light. In fact, all the modalities which I use include the Language of Light. We must not get to bugged down with the worrisome thought that life is over when we are affected by any kind of mental instability of the mind and body. Long Book Description Mental Health Ciris globally are affected by the nuances of time and space that is fluctuating with the frequency of light and cannot be disputed by the ones who are propagating the cures and vaccinations. Those who are radically affected in their entangled minds simply cannot function with what is given to them as a remedy for healing their minds. The mind is simply the electrical field of the body and cannot be activated with chemicals which are very harmful to the body, especially to the central nervous system. It is a distinctive thing to know that everyone who claims to know what is happening in society cannot simply fix those who are broken mentally. Prescribing chemical compounds that can stifle the life force out of the body is not an indicator of helping those who are suffering. It is the many facets of life that can cause people to become too engorged in the mind so that they begin to feel hopeless and unworthy of themselves. When they are then taken to the hospital for help, the wrong diagnosis is pronounced and then they are prescribed dangerous anti-psychotic drugs. The many organizations which are responsible for helping those who are labeled as mentally ill are not equipped with the correct tools to rectify the symptoms that are affecting those who are suffering. It is the wisdom of the ages that will help to effectively treat the real causes of the labels attached to those who are mentally unbalanced. My own experience with suffering from being unbalanced in the mind has propelled me to new levels of awareness, where I knew from the inception of the occurrence of the imbalance that I would have to be a voice for those who are suffering with mental condition of the mind and body. I knew distinctly then as I know now that I will not only be a voice for those who are suffering with mental health conditions and feel utterly hopeless and confused, but I am ahead of other who came before me to provide the wisdom of the universe to those who are entrusted with the care of the mentally ill patients. We must never allow the indignity of money and gullibility to stifle our conscience to become rich from the suffering patients who are mentally unbalanced. It is also the problematic things in the universe that can trigger the density of the times that are causing more people to become so heavy with density that they simply cannot cope with the magnetic proportion of the things that they have faced in life. The majority of people who are suffering globally with depression and anxiety are feeling the effects of the galactic center, being rife with the density of sadness, shame, guilt, fear, and loneliness. This is what triggers feelings of anxiousness, deception, hate and anger. These feelings can be softened with loving kindness to self and then be transmuted with hope and dignity. However, if left unchecked, these feelings can accumulate to heavier feelings of depression, anxiety, and utter hopelessness. These are really repressed feelings which are not managed with care and due diligence from childhood and then are not fully understood as the individuals grow to adulthood. There are many levels of mental health crisis happening in the world today. This can be seen in the many rehab facilities which offer hope to the ones who are negatively charged. These facilities are really a heaven for more of the nuances of what is not need by the ones who must suffer from the medication that is prescribed to them. It is the ultimate crucifixion of the lifeforce to have these drugs taken as the sole factor to fix those who are broken mentally. They cause more damage than good. More efforts should be placed on having those who are already enlightened to share the wisdom of the ages to help soften the central nervous system and then reduce the tension on the body. The spine is especially affected by mental health conditions such as panic attacks and manic-depressive disorder. It is also the things like schizophrenia that can further delegate those affected to an early grave. It must be pointed out here that these are the states of the mind that can be rectified without the prescribed illicit medications. These anti-psychotic medications are really a danger to the body and can severely affect the organs and sympathetic systems of the body. The central nervous system is also drastically reduced to the density of the stratosphere when there are too many chemical imbalances from the medications. The dopamine and serotonin levels are significantly reduced when the medications are contra active to what the body is supposed to naturally produce. I am capable of helping those who are facing severe mental health issues to come to a place of healing and then afford them the decency of knowing the life can continue with ease and grace without the need for any harmful medication whatsoever. It is the distinction to know that we are called to become enlightened so that we can help others who are suffering with mental illness.

Download or read book Suffering Wisely and Well written by Eric Ortlund and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Suffering Exists: God's Purpose for Pain in the Life of Job and throughout Scripture Why does God allow suffering? The pain of suffering can be overwhelmingly mysterious, but the Bible does provide answers. Throughout Scripture, God allows trials in order to accomplish specific purposes in the lives of his people. When faced with suffering they experience spiritual growth; repentance from sin; or, as in the Old Testament story of Job, the chance to demonstrate devotion to God in the face of inexplicable agony. In Suffering Wisely and Well, Eric Ortlund explores different types of trials throughout Scripture, revealing the spiritual purpose for each and reassuring readers with God's promise of restoration. The majority of the book focuses on Job, one of the most well-known yet misunderstood stories of suffering. Ortlund thoughtfully analyzes the text chapter by chapter, including the doubt of Job's friends, God's response to Job's questions, and the meaning behind important imagery including references to Leviathan and Behemoth. Suffering Wisely and Well shows readers how to deepen their relationship with God during painful experiences in their own lives and how to comfort others who are hurting. Explores Lament and Redemption in Scripture: Helps readers understand how to interpret suffering from a Christian perspective Applicable: Each chapter ends with a "What Have We Learned?" summary Biblical Advice on Grief and Support: Teaches Christians how to avoid blame or legalism when addressing the suffering of others
