Book excerpt: As a leader in teaching, training, and transforming boys in Detroit, Jason Wilson shares his own story of discovering what it means to “be a man” in this life-changing memoir. His grandfather’s lynching in the deep South, the murders of his two older brothers, and his verbally harsh and absent father all worked together to form Jason Wilson’s childhood. But it was his decision to acknowledge his emotions and yield to God’s call on his life that made Wilson the man and leader he is today. As the founder of one of the country’s most esteemed youth organizations, Wilson has decades of experience in strengthening the physical, mental, and emotional spirit of boys and men. In Cry Like a Man, Wilson explains the dangers men face in our culture’s definition of “masculinity” and gives readers hope that healing is possible. As Wilson writes, “My passion is to help boys and men find strength to become courageously transparent about their own brokenness as I shed light on the symptoms and causes of childhood trauma and ‘father wounds.’ I long to see men free themselves from emotional incarceration—to see their minds renewed, souls weaned, and relationships restored.”

Book excerpt: Mental health problems (e.g. depression, anxiety and drug use) are one of the main causes of the overall disease burden in the world. In the UK, 84 men commit suicide every week, rising to 123 per day in the US. In Australia, men are three times more likely to commit suicide than women, and it is estimated that there are approximately 65,300 suicide attempts each year. As much as women have been disfigured by the patriarchy, men have too. From birth boys are given a very disempowering view of what it means to be a real man, told to 'man up', that 'boys don't cry', their tenderness and empathy shamed out of them and replaced with a tough, armoured exterior. They learn that women are objects, machismo and misogyny becoming a badge of honour in a world that otherwise leaves them feeling lost, disconnected and unsure of who they're meant to be. They learn to fight for survival, that success and power are everything, and without them, they're nothing. As a result, men have suffered, suppressing their emotions and only learning unhealthy expressions of anger, often manifesting as anxiety, depression, addiction and violence towards other men, women and - ultimately - themselves. In Boys Do Cry, 12 men bare their souls, expose their wounds, and share their breakdown-breakthrough moments to change the narrative around masculinity and inspire men of all ages to step into the man they deeply desire to be. Clear your mind, open your heart, and get ready to go on a journey of truth and vulnerability as we redefine what it means to be a man.Chapters: Removing the Masks By Spencer JacobsFrom Addiction to Recovery By Shaun CoffeyFacing My Demons By Andy BowkerBoys Do Cry By Brad KennyFinding My Way Home By Richie NelsonUnmasking the Masculine By Tim VaughanScreaming on the Inside By Tom JordanThe Mask By Mark NeweyFeelings About Feelings By Curtis HarrenBeing Vulnerable Is Your Superpower By Scott Brandon HoffmanThe Bumpy Road to Success By Reece FormosaTaking the Leap By Eugene StuchinskyAll royalties are being shared equally between Positive Signs, and Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM - registered charity No. 1110621 and SCO44347.)

Book excerpt: Boys Don't Cry is a book that will make sense of depression and anxiety for people who might not recognise those feelings in themselves or others. Suicide is the single biggest killer of men aged 20-45 in the UK. Depression and undiagnosed mental illness are huge contributors to these deaths as they're often more difficult to diagnose in men. And those men don't tend to talk about the typical symptoms or visit their doctor. Meet Tim. For nearly a decade he kept his depression secret. It made him feel so weak and shameful he thought it would destroy his whole life if anyone found out. And Tim is not alone. After finally opening up he realised that mental illness was affecting many men around the globe - and he knew that wasn't ok. A brutally honest, wickedly warming and heart-breaking tale about what it really takes to be a 'real man', written by one who decided that he wanted to change the world by no longer being silent. This is Tim's story, but it could be yours too.

Book excerpt: Developed in response to a personal tragedy, "Real Women Cry (and real men let them): Embracing our God-given gift of tears" is a comprehensive look into the critical role of emotional tears in the process of pain and suffering. In a day of "quick-fix" solutions, the book encourages readers to embrace crying and the process associated with suffering by bringing together the scientific and spiritual evidence that supports the therapeutic place of tears, particularly in regard to women. With the help of expert researchers and clinicians, Catherine Cieciuch DeBenedetto identifies the normal and appropriate biological place of crying and recognizes tears as a "God-ordained gift" intended to help move us through seasons of pain and change. Specific evidence is presented to dispel age-old disparities between men and women regarding tears and crying.

Book excerpt: Real Men Do Cry captures the wisdom of Nehemiah for the twenty- first century. Learn how God intervened to restore a remnant of his people in Israel in the fifth century BC, a time when the nations existence had reached a desperation point. Gods ways have not changed. He still acts on behalf of those he is calling to follow him. As an absolute sovereign, he expects complete obedience to his will. See how God overruled the dominant powers of that time to fulfill his purpose in the world. This practice has not changed. God is still King; however many circumstances and the boasts of the ungodly may seem to mask that fact. Understand the true basis for prayer as Gods people in any age relate to their true King and persist in their obedience to him.

Book excerpt: Men Cry Too I cannot remember the first time I saw a man crying, but I do know I was an adult when it happened. From my experience, in the African American community, men are taught that it is unacceptable and inappropriate for them to cry openly. It is perceived as a sign of weakness. They are told to, "suck it up," and "hold the tears inside." But, is that a reasonable request? No, it is not. Men have feelings and emotions-just like women. It is discriminating, unnatural and unreasonable to request that a man suppress his emotions. Does that make them less than a man? Of course not-it makes them human. Real men will admit that they cry. It is my hope that men who are taught that crying makes them less than a man read these testimonies and realize that those who contributed to this book are definitely REAL MEN! To the men who wrote their stories for this book, I thank you, salute you and applaud you for your testimonies and your honesty.

Book excerpt: The crooner Rudy Vallée's soft, intimate, and sensual vocal delivery simultaneously captivated millions of adoring fans and drew harsh criticism from those threatened by his sensitive masculinity. Although Vallée and other crooners reflected the gender fluidity of late-1920s popular culture, their challenge to the Depression era's more conservative masculine norms led cultural authorities to stigmatize them as gender and sexual deviants. In Real Men Don't Sing Allison McCracken outlines crooning's history from its origins in minstrelsy through its development as the microphone sound most associated with white recording artists, band singers, and radio stars. She charts early crooners’ rise and fall between 1925 and 1934, contrasting Rudy Vallée with Bing Crosby to demonstrate how attempts to contain crooners created and dictated standards of white masculinity for male singers. Unlike Vallée, Crosby survived the crooner backlash by adapting his voice and persona to adhere to white middle-class masculine norms. The effects of these norms are felt to this day, as critics continue to question the masculinity of youthful, romantic white male singers. Crooners, McCracken shows, not only were the first pop stars: their short-lived yet massive popularity fundamentally changed American culture.

These heroes have largely been censored from our textbooks and culture. 'Real Men' is all about them. I read about them, heard about them, saw movies about them while growing up,"" R. Book excerpt: For Fauziya Kassindja, an idyllic childhood in Togo, West Africa, sheltered from the tribal practices of polygamy and genital mutilation, ended with her beloved father's sudden death. Forced into an arranged marriage at age seventeen, Fauziya was told to prepare for kakia, the ritual also known as female genital mutilation. It is a ritual no woman can refuse. But Fauziya dared to try. This is her story--told in her own words--of fleeing Africa just hours before the ritual kakia was to take place, of seeking asylum in America only to be locked up in U.S. prisons, and of meeting Layli Miller Bashir, a law student who became Fauziya's friend and advocate during her horrifying sixteen months behind bars. Layli enlisted help from Karen Musalo, an expert in refugee law and acting director of the American University International Human Rights Clinic. In addition to devoting her own considerable efforts to the case, Musalo assembled a team to fight with her on Fauziya's behalf. Ultimately, in a landmark decision in immigration history, Fauziya Kassindja was granted asylum on June 13, 1996. Do They Hear You When You Cry is her unforgettable chronicle of triumph.

Book excerpt: The second novel from the critically acclaimed writer of Pike, which was nominated for France’s prestigious Grand Prix de Littérature Policière crime fiction award and “easily rivals Larry Brown’s most renowned novels” (Spinetingler Magazine). In the tradition of Cormac McCarthy and Larry Brown comes a haunting story about men, their fathers, their sons, and the legacy of violence. For Patterson Wells, disaster is the norm. Working alongside dangerous, desperate, itinerant men as a tree clearer in disaster zones, he's still dealing with the loss of his young son. Writing letters to the boy offers some solace. The bottle gives more. Upon a return trip to Colorado, Patterson stops to go fishing with an old acquaintance, only to find him in a meth-induced delirium and keeping a woman tied up in the bathtub. In the ensuing chain of events, which will test not only his future but his past, Patterson tries to do the right thing. Still, in the lives of those he knows, violence and justice have made of each other strange, intoxicating bedfellows. Hailed as “the next great American writer” (Frank Bill, author of Crimes in Southern Indiana), Benjamin Whitmer has crafted a literary triumph that is by turns harrowing, darkly comic, and wise.
