Book excerpt: By the thirty-fi rst century the nations of Earth had united and sent kolonies throughout the Sol System, as well as to six other star systems in the Milky Way. Candidate planets to kolonize were beginning to become more and more diffi cult to fi nd, but the Head of Kolonization had a bold plan to send a kolonie to another galaxy; a galaxy nearly twenty-five thousand light years from the planet Earth. Durability on the order of twenty-seven thousand years dictated a totally reengineered ship and an android crew capable of being mothers, and fathers to the frozen embryos to be born on a New Earth in a far distant galaxy. Barely fifteen thousand years into the mission disaster strikes the Aurora, and although the ship survives it has somehow been thrown into a location in intergalactic space only one hundred light years from an unknown galaxy. The crew, awakened from their sleep mode, has no idea of where they are or how they got there; but they soon discover that the kolonists have all perished in the disaster. This now becomes the story of how they work toward establishing their own culture, and toward accomplishing their mission to establish a New Earth kolonie.

Book excerpt: When one reads through the New Testament, it's evident that the practice of planting churches began two thousand years ago. Today's culture, community, and connections differ greatly from the churches Peter and Paul helped build. Even in the past 20 years, those factors have dramatically changed the ministry of church planting. In Ready, Set, Plant Bener Agtarap and Curtis Brown provide tools for planting churches—looking at the spiritual, social, and economic aspects of the process. Creating new church bodies requires redefining priorities and practices. Yet one thing that never changes is that the mission must be God's mission. Ready, Set, Plant raises questions about church planting that every new church community must address: Why? Who? How? What? Where? When? Agtarap and Brown provide a broad range of answers to each question. By examining these questions and various answers, church planters will be equipped to fulfill their divine call to make disciples and transform the world.

Book excerpt: Pro tip: Never volunteer for anything. That's the first thing they told me in flight school. It's 2037. I'm Mike Williams, but you can call me 'Magnet', and I'm a fighter pilot on the TFR Sydney. Our flight leader, Iron, has a mission: Volunteer only. It's the usual gig. High risk, lots of unknowns, an opportunity to make history or die trying. Hopefully the former, but sometimes it's a little of column A, a little of column B, you know? The mission's going to a place no Human's been, hoping to earn ourselves some desperately needed allies. Pretty simple on paper. Fly out to a rendezvous at a distant world, pick up an alien and take him to his blushing bride. Although, come to think of it, I don't know if psychotic waist-high reptilians can blush. A 13,700-word story in the Lacuna universe, set after the events of Magnet but suitable for reading as a stand-alone story. Parts of the Lacuna universe: Magnet Magnet: Special Mission Magnet: Marauder Magnet: Scarecrow (new release!) Magnet: Omnibus One (new release!) Imperfect Faith The Lacuna series: Lacuna Lacuna: The Sands of Karathi Lacuna: The Spectre of Oblivion Lacuna: The Ashes of Humanity Lacuna: The Prelude to Eternity (coming soon!)

Book excerpt: In Air Combat, veteran and military author Robert F. Dorr has collected dozens of interviews from combat veterans who have experienced what it’s like to face the enemy in the skies above, from the first days of World War II to the current war on terror. Each story tells a first-hand account of what it’s like to be in the thick of the fight, describes the history, strengths, and weaknesses of each man’s plane in detail, and offers readers a rare glimpse into the minds and hearts of those who dare to fight in the air. From the savage dogfights of World War II to the high-tech missile duels of today, those who wage war in the skies—and the machines they fly—are a breed apart. Pushing themselves to the cutting edge of speed and skill, their battleground is among the clouds—where every fight you survive is a victory. These are their stories—in their own words.

Book excerpt: She's protecting his body and guarding her heart.... Country music star Devin McClain understands there's a downside to life in the public eye, but the laidback Wyoming cowboy has never imagined he'd attract crazed fans who would do anything to garner his attention. When veiled threats become real, he agrees to hire a discreet security detail. But Devin is shocked when that bodyguard is a hard-bodied woman. He's even more stunned to be attracted to the steely-eyed stunner. Former soldier Liberty Masterson's return to civilian life has been fraught with challenges until she lands a job with a prestigious security firm. But when she agrees to provide personal protection during a cross-country tour, she doesn't realize she has signed up to masquerade as the playboy star's girlfriend. Though she's more comfortable in combat boots than high heels, she has no choice but to appear to be the sexy groupie Devin prefers. Living in close quarters causes the chemistry between them to ignite, and Devin realizes he wants to turn their charade of a romance into reality. Although Liberty surrenders to his every whim behind closed doors, she fears the sexy country star doesn't see the real her; and Devin can't help but worry when the tour ends that there might not be enough between them to build something that won't fade away....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes you do everything right, but it just isnÕt your day. A part fails and your helicopter comes apart in flight, or, another aircraft runs into you and the pieces of both fall to the ground below, or the enemy gunner pulls the trigger at just the right moment and his rounds find your aircraft in exactly the right spot to take it out of the sky. Whichever way it happens, it wasnÕt your day. Which is why, after 24 years and over 5,000 flight hours with four armed services, Major Robert Curtis was so surprised at being alive when he passed his retirement physical. Starting with enlisting in the Army to fly helicopters during Vietnam, and continuing on through service with the National Guard, Marine Corps and Royal Navy, he flew eight different helicoptersÑfrom the wooden-bladed OH-13E, through the Chinook, SeaKnight and SeaKing, in war and peace around the world. During that time over 50 of his friends died in crashes, both in combat and in accidents, but somehow his skill, and not an inconsiderable amount of luck and superstition, saw him through. His flying career began with a misbegotten strategy for beating the draft by enlisting. With the Vietnam War raging full blast in 1968 the draft was inevitable, so he wanted to at least get some small measure of control of his future. Although he had no thought of flying when he walked into the recruiting office, he walked out signed up to be a helicopter pilot. What he did not know was that 43% of all the aircraft sent to Vietnam were destroyed in combat or accidents. Soon he was in the thick of the war, flying Chinooks with the 101st Airborne. After Vietnam he left the Army, but kept flying in the National Guard while going to college. He was accepted at two law schools, but flying is addictive, so he instead enlisted in the USMC to fly some more. Over the next 17 years he would fly around the world off US and British ships from Egypt to Norway and all points in between. His engaging story will be a delight to all aviation enthusiasts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Korean War ended in 1953, a number of books and articles have been written about the air-to-air battles between the American F-86s and Russian MiGs. Some parts of the stories that appear in those publications are probably true, but many of them contain fantasies, exaggerations and even lies that are both preposterous and demeaning to the Air Force. Unfortunately much of what survives in the West as the history of those epic air battles is found in those partially flawed publications. I was in a position to know what was going on there since I spent a year observing the scene as an F-86 pilot fighting the MiGs with the 51st Fighter Wing. I have written this book because I want to leave history a more complete and honest picture of what went on there. I have been retired for more than fifty years, but my love for the Air Force and loathing for anything that reflects shame or dishonor on that great organization has compelled me to act. Feeling the way I do, writing in an effort to correct and enhance the record is an easy task since I enjoy writing and was reared to place real value in truth, honor and integrity and hate dishonesty, dissembling and deceit.
