Schonfield in 1939 and published by Nelson in 1940. The front flap of the dust cover describes the work thus:"A collection of the many interesting stories about our Lord to be found in the accounts of His life not regarded as "canonical." The importance of these documents lies in the fact that they embody a useful remnant of independent tradition about the life and teaching of Christ; also they throw light on the spiritual outlook of the early Christian Age in which they were compiled. The Gospels of James, of Pseudo-Matthew, of Thomas, and of Nicodemus are those from which extracts have been taken, and the translation used is that of the late Alexander Walker."Here we have re-set and produced this fascinating book in Kindle Format.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1925 the writer purchased from a London antiquarian bookseller a small volume, dated A.D. 1555, containing the Gospel of Matthew in Hebrew, followed by a series of Jewish objections to the Gospel to the number of twenty-three, also in Hebrew. The text of the Gospel was accompanied at the end of the volume by a Latin translation. A dedicatory epistle to Charles de Guise, Cardinal of Lorraine, relates how Jean du Tillet, Bishop of Brieu, while travelling in Italy in the year 1553, found the Hebrew manuscript among the Jews, and brought it back with him to Paris, where he commissioned a Hebrew scholar, Jean Mercier, to translate it into Latin. Mercier, however, has a slightly different tale to tell. In his own preface he states that the Bishop of Brieu had extorted the MS. from the Jews of Rome for the purpose of examination. Confirmatory evidence of this statement appears in the fact that, on 12th August 1553, Pope Julius III. signed a decree for the suppression of the Talmud on the representation of the anti-Semitic Pietro, Cardinal Caraffa, the Inquisitor-General, afterwards Pope Paul IV. This decree was carried into effect in Rome with great ruthlessness on Rosh Hashanna (Jewish New Year’s Day), 9th September 1553, for not only were copies of the Talmud seized, on the plea that it was inimical to Christianity, but every Hebrew book on which the minions of the Inquisition could lay their hands. It is highly probable that the Bishop of Brieu found the Hebrew MS. of Matthew’s Gospel among the confiscated books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally back in print, this special 40th anniversary edition of Dr. Schonfield’s international multimillion-copy bestseller is set to rock the establishment view of the life of Jesus all over again. There is probably no other figure in modern Jewish historical research who is more controversial or famous than Hugh J. Schonfield, who once said: “The scholars deplore that I have spilled the beans to the public. Several of them have said to me, ‘You ought to have kept this just among ourselves, you know.’” What he did to “spill the beans” was present historical evidence suggesting that Jesus was a mortal man, a young genius who believed himself to be the Messiah and deliberately and brilliantly planned his entire ministry according to the Old Testament prophecies—even to the extent of plotting his own arrest, crucifixion and resurrection. Since Schonfield’s death in 1988, his popularity and the interest in his prodigious work, which included over 40 books, has drawn increasing attention, particularly outside Judaism. In fact, it is probably fair to say that his contribution to the Gentile understanding of Jewish aspirations among those within the Christian cultural framework has been without parallel. In true Christian tradition, he has also been the cause of much contention. In the wake of resurgent interest in religious history spurred by Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ and Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code, this 40th anniversary edition of The Passover Plot is set to engage a completely new generation of readers searching for truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those Incredible Christians is written as a companion to the bestseller, The Passover Plot. It continues the story after Jesus' crucifixion to the movements surrounding the early disciples and how the message of the gospels developed. It demonstrates with considerable evidence how the understanding of the role and person of Messiah became adapted and corrupted and how the conflicts and power struggles with the Church at Rome, and the Roman Empire emerged.Schonfield writes as an objective historian rather than as a theologian and ruthlessly tries to get behind the intensively researched data to give us a clearer picture of what happened in those times.Learning from history, we will find many parallels in today's world and maybe come to a clearer understanding of what is driving our society today.
