Book excerpt: "People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social communication challenges and repetitive patterns of behaviour, are known to have a number of strengths and special interests. Hyperlexia, a term coined by Silberberg and Silberberg (1967) represents both a strength and a special interest for people with ASD. Those with hyperlexia demonstrate a strength in early word reading, alongside an intense special interest in letters and words, from a very early age. However, this strength in early word reading is accompanied by challenges in reading comprehension. The current dissertation had several goals. First, to review the literature on young children with hyperlexia to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms specific to emergent literacy skills that underlie early word reading. A second goal, addressed in the first manuscript (Article 1), was to compare emergent literacy skills of preschool children with ASD and hyperlexia, and ASD without hyperlexia, to their typically developing (TD) peers. Findings from Article 1 indicated that preschoolers with ASD and hyperlexia demonstrate an alternate, non-phonological route to word reading that is unlike their TD peers. This study discusses the implications on teaching practices for teachers, clinicians and parents of young children with ASD and hyperlexia. Subsequently, the main goal addressed in the second manuscript (Article 2) was to evaluate a novel tablet-based, parent-supported, reading comprehension intervention aimed at improving the challenges in reading for meaning associated with hyperlexia from a very early age. The results of this 6-week intervention demonstrated gains in reading comprehension for the group with ASD and hyperlexia as compared to a TD group, and a group with ASD without hyperlexia. In addition, gains in receptive language skills were observed for all groups. Findings from Article 2 suggest a shift from teaching reading comprehension in the later grades to addressing these challenges at the preschool level at the first signs of hyperlexia. Despite an increase in research on the communicative characteristics and effective treatments for this disorder, one area in which there is an especially unfortunate lack of information relates to reading ability of individuals with ASD. This study focuses on identifying specific reading and associated deficits in two children with ASD by examining oral reading rate, accuracy, fluency, and comprehension, as well as oral language function. The methods include assessment of oral reading and oral language skills through administration of reading and language norm-referenced tests as well as examination of literacy development through a parent questionnaire. Results of this study show a unique relationship between reading accuracy and reading comprehension for each participant, as well as variation in patterns of reading errors. Results of this exploratory study provide limited support for the findings of a previous study of reading skills of children with ASD (Nation, Clarke, Wright, & Williams, 2006), but also show variability that requires further study with a greater number of participants.

The point of departure of the study was that, though existing research studies agree on a generalized pragmatic impairment in this clinical population even in cases in which all other levels of linguistic competence are spared, the cause of this impairment of pragmatic skills in toto is still unknown. The hypothesis underlying this book is that an explanation for this may be found in the fact that researchers appear to be conducting their work in order to demonstrate that the theory upon which their research is based is the definitive explanation for this phenomenon. Taking a critical stand towards this type of approach, the research presented in this book is grounded upon a solid theoretical basis, but does not seek to demonstrate the superiority of one theoretical hypothesis over another. The first two chapters are theoretical in scope, and serve as a foundation for understanding previous research and, hence, the rationale of the investigation carried out here. From chapter three onwards, the main body of research of this particular study is presented and the results are discussed. In order to verify the degree of implicit meaning understanding, the participants in this research study were administered a test that included both written items and videos of conversational exchanges containing a specific kind of implicit meaning about which they were asked questions. The videos allowed for the inclusion of all the contextual clues necessary for utterance interpretation and, also, for the analysis of the extent to which the inability to interpret implicit meaning depends on testing modality. The test elaborated for this research differs from those of previous studies mainly because of this feature, which pays due attention to context, thereby allowing for interactions that are as realistic as possible. Moreover, participants were asked to motivate their answers, and this proved fundamental in the data interpretation phase. The results of the study contradict previous research findings insofar as regards the severity of the impairment, in that ASD patients demonstrate an ability, albeit at different levels, to disambiguate sentences and assign a non-literal meaning to utterances.

In line with this view, previous research suggests that there is a relationship between early literacy measures and comprehension measures in TD students; this area is more recently being examined in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Furthermore, child characteristics, such as oral language skills, problem behaviors, IQ and social skills, effect the development of reading comprehension, especially in children with ASD who have specific deficits in these areas. Children between the ages of 4 and 7 ( M = 5.13 years) and their parents (N = 120) were recruited from a larger longitudinal study and were assessed at three time points. The simple view of reading suggests that reading comprehension is the product of decoding skills and oral language, which is a deficit area for students with ASD. Some literature has also suggested that social skills impact reading comprehension development. The present study examines the simple view of reading with added emphasis on social skills in two samples of students with ASD, kindergarteners (N = 128) and second graders (N = 73), using latent variable path analyses. The study also examines the relationship between social skills and reading skill growth across pre-kindergarten to second grade, the impact of oral language on this growth, and the impact of this growth on reading comprehension in a larger sample of students with ASD (N = 182) using longitudinal growth analyses. Results indicate that the simple view of reading, including social skills, was an appropriate model for both kindergarteners and second graders, with some differences between the models. Additionally, reading growth impacted later reading comprehension, although social skills growth did not.
