Book excerpt: Nowadays distributed energy resources (DER) can provide certain reactive power flexibility for voltage support in alternating current power systems. Besides local voltage support at the distribution level, the DER can also provide reactive power flexibility at the transmission-distribution (T-D) interface, which can improve the reactive power grid adequacy of the distribution level. The term reactive power grid adequacy describes the compliance level of a distribution grid with a predefined reactive power range at the T-D interface. However, a challenge in grid planning procedures is the consideration of the usually intermittent reactive power flexibility potential by the DER. This study aims to develop practicable grid planning procedures for advanced reactive power management at the T-D interface by making use of controllable reactive power sources at the distribution level, like DER and distributed reactive power compensators. The study is performed for a real German distribution grid section with very high-distributed generation.

Book excerpt: The integration of new sources of energy like wind power, solar-power, small-scale generation, or combined heat and power in the power grid is something that impacts a lot of stakeholders: network companies (both distribution and transmission), the owners and operators of the DG units, other end-users of the power grid (including normal consumers like you and me) and not in the least policy makers and regulators. There is a lot of misunderstanding about the impact of DG on the power grid, with one side (including mainly some but certainly not all, network companies) claiming that the lights will go out soon, whereas the other side (including some DG operators and large parks of the general public) claiming that there is nothing to worry about and that it's all a conspiracy of the large production companies that want to protect their own interests and keep the electricity price high. The authors are of the strong opinion that this is NOT the way one should approach such an important subject as the integration of new, more environmentally friendly, sources of energy in the power grid. With this book the authors aim to bring some clarity to the debate allowing all stakeholders together to move to a solution. This book will introduce systematic and transparent methods for quantifying the impact of DG on the power grid.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in Distributed Generation (DG) in power system networks has been growing rapidly. This increase can be explained by factors such as environmental concerns, the restructuring of electricity businesses, and the development of technologies for small-scale power generation. DG units are typically connected so as to work in parallel with the utility grid; however, with the increased penetration level of these units and the advancements in unit's control techniques, there is a great possibility for these units to be operated in an autonomous mode known as a microgrid. Integrating DG units into distribution systems can have an impact on different practices such as voltage profile, power flow, power quality, stability, reliability, and protection. The impact of the DG units on stability problem can be further classified into three issues: voltage stability, angle stability, and frequency stability. As both angle and frequency stability are not often seen in distribution systems, voltage stability is considered to be the most significant in such systems. In fact, the distribution system in its typical design doesn't suffer from any stability problems, given that all its active and reactive supplies are guaranteed through the substation. However, the following facts alter this situation: - With the development of economy, load demands in distribution networks are sharply increasing. Hence, the distribution networks are operating more close to the voltage instability boundaries. - The integration of distributed generation in distribution system introduces possibility of encountering some active/reactive power mismatches resulting in some stability concerns at the distribution level. Motivated by these facts, the target of this thesis is to investigate, analyze and enhance the voltage stability of distribution systems with high penetration of distributed generation. This study is important for the utilities because it can be applied with Connection Impact Assessment (CIA). The study can be added as a complement assessment to study the impacts of the installation of DG units on voltage stability.

Book excerpt: This thesis is about the design and the implementation of a resilient grid operation for the distribution grid. This research question is induced by the advancing of three trends: Decarbonisation, decentralisation and digitalisation. These three trends transform the hitherto passive distribution grid into an active system that contains an active operation. The term “resilience” describes capabilities of the system to absorb, to adapt, and to recover from faults and disturbances. This concept is realised on the one hand with the choice of the operation architecture, on the other hand for the choice of possible methods and functions. This thesis develops a distributed-hierarchical operation architecture. For this architecture several methods have been developed that optimally benefit from the operation architecture and that allow the fully automated operation of the distribution grid. For that purpose a heuristic optimisation has been developed to solve problems like voltage profile violations and congestions. Another important method, especially with regard to resilience, is the self-healing capability to resupply clients after permanent faults.

Book excerpt: Among the various major components of the electric power system, distribution grids have not received a lot of attention from the research community. Today's distribution grids are experiencing a significant transformation due to an increasing amount of smart electric loads and distributed energy resources (DERs), such as electric vehicles, rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and energy storage. Growing penetration of DERs increase the power injection variability in distribution grids, leading to power quality issues such as voltage unbalance and voltage variations. The intermittent nature of these DERs and load forecasting errors can also increase uncertainty in distribution grids. Furthermore, DERs are managed by different entities such as distribution utility or third-party aggregators whose objectives are conflicting with each other. This makes it challenging to precisely control DER behavior to optimize grid operations. This work introduces an optimization-based approach to improve power quality in unbalanced distribution grids and effectively exploit the flexibility offered by DERs. DERs such as solar PV systems with power electronic inverters can be employed as a cost-effective solution to provide reactive power support and minimize voltage violations and unbalance. We first develop a three-phase optimal power flow (OPF) formulation to identify DER control actions that improve power quality. A major challenge to efficiently solving the three-phase OPF is computation time. To reduce computational complexity, three linear power flow models which are well suited to analyze voltage unbalance are utilized as part of a successive approximation approach to provide good quality solutions that are AC feasible. The OPF formulation is then extended to examine the impact of uncertainty on distribution grid operations by leveraging a chance-constrained optimization approach. By using this method, we identify a set of DER control actions that can be utilized across a range of highly uncertain scenarios. Finally, the challenges of harnessing the flexibility offered by DERs, which are controlled by different entities in the grid, is addressed. A bilevel optimization approach is proposed to determine the collective DER and load flexibility in the network. Our case studies demonstrate that the resulting aggregate power flexibility range can help reduce burdens on transmission system resources while maintaining acceptable power quality in distribution grids.

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present framework of the electric power system enhances the gradual introduction of renewable energy sources because of environmental requirements. Within this setting, renewable micro-generators are progressively spreading in low voltage (LV) distribution grids acting as self-consumption energy supply for residential and industrial electric schemes. Distributed generation through renewable micro-generators in LV networks causes signi cant alterations in the electric parameters due to surplus injected energy in o -peak load demand hours. As a result of disturbing the power balance of the electric grid, over-voltage appears, power ow is upset and current increases. To permit further implementation of renewable micro-generators in LV grids, such as PV panels and wind turbines, mitigation techniques must be developed to regulate the in icted alterations. Hence, the objective of the present work enhances the evaluation of energy storage systems to work as mitigation tools. According to the settled premises, the present study analyzes the e ectiveness of centralized batteries on the electric parameters of LV distribution grids with many renewable micro-generator modules, and their in uence on unbalanced phases and energy losses, all through simulations. Therefore, a speci c simulation tool has been created, automating the entire procedure through an algorithm that functions in the MATLABr and MATPOWER working environment. In order to acquire appropriate and valid result outcomes during the simulation process, a speci c model that recreates a realistic residential LV distribution grid with included micro-generators and centralized energy storage system has been established based on real data. Furthermore, di erent possible scenarios modifying variable parameters of the model are discussed in order to approximate the case study to real conditions (average behavior and best/worst case scenarios). Ultimately the outcomes of the simulation process are evaluated in order to determine the e ectiveness and viability of the proposed mitigation tool. Therefore, all positive and negative traits are appraised according to technological vantages and economic viability of the technology. To conclude, apart from the sections included in the analysis of the present study, additional relevant working areas are also featured within the appendices of the project. These include environmental impact, economic study, computation methods, tool descriptions and utilized data.

Book excerpt: The smart grid initiative, integrating advanced sensing technologies, intelligent control methods, and bi-directional communications into the contemporary electricity grid, offers excellent opportunities for energy efficiency improvements and better integration of distributed generation, coexisting with centralized generation units within an active network. A large share of the installed capacity for recent renewable energy sources already comprises insular electricity grids, since the latter are preferable due to their high potential for renewables. However, the increasing share of renewables in the power generation mix of insular power systems presents a significant challenge to efficient management of the insular distribution networks, mainly due to the variability and uncertainty of renewable generation. More than other electricity grids, insular electricity grids require the incorporation of sustainable resources and the maximization of the integration of local resources, as well as specific solutions to cope with the inherent characteristics of renewable generation. Insular power systems need a new generation of methodologies and tools to face the new paradigm of large-scale renewable integration. Smart and Sustainable Power Systems: Operations, Planning, and Economics of Insular Electricity Grids discusses the modeling, simulation, and optimization of insular power systems to address the effects of large-scale integration of renewables and demand-side management.
