Book excerpt: The objective of Mechanisms of Inorganic and Organometallic Reactions is to provide an ongoing critical review of the literature concerned with the mechanisms of reactions of inorganic and organometallic compounds. The main focus is on reactions in solution, although solid state and gas phase studies are included where they provide relevant mechanistic insight. Each volume covers an eighteen month literature period, and this, the seventh volume in the series, deals with papers published during July 1988 through December 1989. Where appropriate, there are references to earlier work, and also to specific sections in previous volumes. Coverage continues to span the whole area as comprehensively as possible in each volume, and although it is impossible be absolutely complete, every effort is made to include all the important for it to published work that is relevant to the elucidation of reaction mechanisms. Numerical data are reported in the units used by the original authors, and they are only converted to common units when making comparisons. The basic format of earlier volumes is retained to facilitate tracing progress over several years in a particular topic; this can now be done for more than a decade worth of research. In the last volume, ligand reactivity of both coordination and organometallic compounds were brought together in Chapter 12, and, in response to numerous positive comments from readers, this arrangement has been maintained. There have been some similar suggestions about oscillating reactions, and this topic may have a separate section in the next volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes the latest advances and perspectives in hydrosilylation, with a focus on new organometallic catalysts and their mechanistic aspects. Hydrosilylation is the reaction of ≡SiH with carbon-carbon, carbon-heteroatom or heteroatom-heteroatom bonds and is the most fundamental and elegant method for laboratory and industrial synthesis of organosilicon molecular and macromolecular compounds. Yet these reactions do require a catalyst, for which initially homogeneous noble metal catalyst, mainly platinum, rhodium, iridium or ruthenium were used. However the high prices, metallic residues of these valuable catalysts as well as issues with product purification, did increase the interest in developing new catalysts. Noteworthy in this regard are the recently developed hydrosilylation reactions using catalysts based on earth-abundant transition metals (for example Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) and heterogeneous catalysts presented here. This volume of Topics in Organometallic Chemistry is written for scientists interested in silicon chemistry and its catalytic aspects, but can also be used as valuable handbook for postgraduate and advanced undergraduate students working with organometallic chemistry, catalysis as well as synthesis of fine chemicals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a study of the reactions of platinum complexes with dimethylamine-borane (DMAB) as models for alkane activation. It is concluded that sigmaborane complexes of platinum(II) or platinum(IV) will be difficult to synthesize or even to detect as intermediates in hydride transfer from boranes to platinum. The complex [PtMe(O2CCF3)(bpy)] reacts with DMAB to form an intermediate [PtMeH(bpy)] complex, which undergoes reductive elimination of methane with further degradation to give platinum(0) and free 2,2'-bipyridine. The addition of methyl acrylate to the reaction allowed the trapping of the platinum-hydride, producing [PtCl(CHMeCO2Me)(bpy)] and [Pt(CHMeCO2Me)2(bpy)]. Oxidative addition of methyl iodide produced the complex [PtMe(CHMeCO2Me)Cl(I)(bpy)]. As well, the reaction of [Pt(O2CCF3)2(dppe)] with DMAB afforded the [Pt( -H)(dppe)]2[O2CCF3]2 complex. These complexes are characterized by NMR spectroscopy, with additional structural information obtained from the crystal structure of [PtMe(CHMeCO2Me)Cl(I)(bpy)]. Complexes [PtMe3(OTf)(bpy)] and [PtMe3(OTf)(bu2bpy)] react with DMAB to afford [PtMe3(Me2NH)(bpy)]+, [Pt2Me6( -H)(bpy)2]+, [PtMe3(Me2NH)(bu2bpy)]+, and [Pt2Me6( -H)(bu2bpy)2]+. The addition of dibenzoyl peroxide to [PtMe2(bpy)] yielded [PtMe2(OBn)2(bpy)]. The reaction of [PtMe3(OTf)(dmpe)] with DMAB afforded the [PtMe4(dmpe)] complex. These complexes are characterized by NMR spectroscopy.

Relative Pt-X Bond Dissociation Energies (BDE's) for these complexes have been calculated from experimentally measured equilibrium and organic BDE's. Changes in relative BDE's are noted when ligands for the complexes are exchanged. Oxygen atom transfer reactions by a new platinum hydroxo catalyst have been studied. This catalyst is generated by the reaction of a platinum oxo complex with water and catalytically activates the reaction of the this complex with ethylene. The kinetics of this reaction have been studied and a reaction pathway has been proposed. The synthesis and characterization of a series of heteroatom substituted gold imido complexes have been reported. It has been demonstrated that the stability of gold imido complexes has a linear free energy relationship with the donor strength of the adjacent phosphine ligand. The decomposition of the complex involves the release of a free nitrene. Larger phosphine ligands retard the decomposition, and the decomposition is blocked by alkylation of the hydrazido ligand.

Heck’s carbon coupling reaction, this book highlights the subject of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for palladium-catalyzed cross couplings in organic synthesis, and includes a foreword from Nobel Prize winner Richard F. Heck. The Mizoroki-Heck reaction is a palladium-catalyzed carbon–carbon bond forming process which is widely used in organic and organometallic synthesis. It has seen increasing use in the past decade as chemists look for strategies enabling the controlled construction of complex carbon skeletons. The Mizoroki-Heck Reaction is the first dedicated volume on this important reaction, including topics on: mechanisms of the Mizoroki-Heck reaction intermolecular Mizoroki-Heck reactions focus on regioselectivity and product outcome in organic synthesis waste-minimized Mizoroki-Heck reactions intramolecular Mizoroki-Heck reactions formation of heterocycles chelation-controlled Mizoroki-Heck reactions the Mizoroki-Heck reaction in domino processes oxidative heck-type reactions (Fujiwara-Moritani reactions) Mizoroki-Heck reactions with metals other than palladium ligand design for intermolecular asymmetric Mizoroki-Heck reactions intramolecular enantioselective Mizoroki-Heck reactions desymmetrizing Mizoroki-Heck reactions applications in combinatorial and solid phase syntheses, and the development of modern solvent systems and reaction techniques the asymmetric intramolecular Mizoroki-Heck reaction in natural product total synthesis Several chapters are devoted to asymmetric Heck reactions with particular focus on the construction of otherwise difficult-to-obtain sterically congested tertiary and quaternary carbons. Industrial and academic applications are highlighted in the final section. The Mizoroki-Heck Reaction will find a place on the bookshelves of any organic or organometallic chemist. “I am convinced that this book will rapidly become the most important reference text for research chemists in academia and industry who seek orientation in the rapidly growing and – for the layman – confusing field described as the “’Mizoroki–Heck reaction’.” (Synthesis, March 2010)

Book excerpt: Organometallic chemistry belongs to the most rapidly developing area of chemistry today. This is due to the fact that research dealing with the structure of compounds and chemical bonding has been greatly intensified in recent years. Additionally, organometallic compounds have been widely utilized in catalysis, organic synthesis, electronics, etc. This book is based on my lectures concerning basic organometallic chemistry for fourth and fifth year chemistry students and on my lectures concerning advanced organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis for Ph.D. graduate students. Many recent developments in the area of organometallic chemistry as weIl as homogeneous catalysis are presented. Essential research results dealing with a given class of organometallic compounds are discussed briefly. Results of physicochemical research methods of various organometallic compounds as weIl as their synthesis, properties, structures, reactivities, and applications are discussed more thoroughly. The selection of tabulated data is arbitrary because, often, it has been impossible to avoid omissions. Nevertheless, these data can be very helpful in understanding properties of organometaIlic compounds and their reactivities. All physical data are given in SI units; the interatomic distances are given in pm units in figures and tables. I am indebted to Professor S. A. Duraj for translating and editing this book. His remarks, discussions, and suggestions are greatly appreciated. I also express gratitude to Virginia E. Duraj for editing and proofreading.
