This book was released on 1996 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A range of polymer blends and polymer blend composites has been produced using a novel four-stream reaction injection moulding (RIM) machine fitted with a single mixhead. Polymer blend combinations of epoxy - hybrid polyester (with and without glass fibre reinforcement), and polyurethane - hybrid polyester were moulded at a range of weight ratios of the components with the objectives of producing modulus enhanced and impact modified polymer blends. The products have been characterised and the morphology and physical properties have been determined by dynamic thermal methods, impact measurement, tensometry, C-scan ultrasound and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The impact modified hybrid polyesters exhibited enhanced properties with a 5% (by weight) addition of polyurethane. Modulus enhanced urethanes were produced at between 12 and 15 % (by weight) addition of hybrid polyester. No enhanced combined effects were observed in the properties of the epoxy : hybrid polyester blends. However, a 5 % addition of hybrid polyester significantly reduced the shrinkage normally associated with epoxy mouldings. The adiabatic temperature rise of a model polyurethane formulation was also. investigated to determine whether the reaction rate was dependent on the concentration of isocyanate only, as had been previously proposed. It was found that the reaction rate was dependent on the level of tin allyl catalyst concentration but a second order kinetic model did not give good agreement with the experimental data. The RIM machine was successfully adapted in order that two mixheads might be utilised simultaneously. A twin mixhead adapter was used to accommodate the dual mixhead system. The arrangement was tested using non-reacting fluids of similar viscosity to that of the resins used in polymer production and the optimum moulding conditions were determined. The polymer blends produced during this work have been included in an on-going project aimed at monitoring the weathering behaviour of polymers in the Antarctic. The programme and preliminary results are contained in an Appendix to the main work.

Download or read book Liquid Moulding Technologies written by C D Rudd and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid moulding technologies such as RTM and SRIM are increasingly used for manufacturing composites in a variety of industries. Most interest stems from the automotive industry in the continuing search for weight savings, manufacturing economies and vehicle refinement. Liquid Moulding Technologies provides a unique insight into the development and use of such processes with a comprehensive description of the material, process variants, equipment, control strategies and tooling techniques used. Procedures for materials characterisation, preform and mould design are also described and the text is augmented by a number of case studies for prototype and production parts. This book is an invaluable source for both industrial moulders and those working in research and development.
