Book excerpt: The Rawlings men have always had a close association with the police force. Those who don't become policemen themselves have always flocked toward related professions. The family is full of forensic psychologists, scene of crime officers and police advisers. And as for those rare Rawlings men who have no interest in maintaining law and order - they can still appreciate a man in uniform, and a finely crafted pair of handcuffs! This volume contains the first four stories in the series: In Handcuffs and Leather, Dr. Rawlings wants nothing more than to help Constable Hadley overcome a traumatic event endured while on the job. Nothing, perhaps, except to teach the younger man what dominance and submission are really about. Hadley's about to find out what it's like to be restrained by a lover rather than a criminal. In Handcuffs and Glory Holes, Sergeant Conrad Rawlings discovers that even hiding behind a glory holes can't stop him coming face to face with a submissive in need. When he catches sight of Willis, as they exit neighboring cubicles, what was supposed to be a fleeting hook up quickly becomes far more. In Handcuffs and Headlocks, undercover police officer Ed Rawlings has become so good at playing pretend he's finding it increasingly difficult to return to reality and remember who he really is. Can martial arts instructor Derby Fitzgerald remind Ed how good it feels to be himself? In Handcuffs and Trouble, Trent Rawlings has just joined the force. He isn't surprised to find himself being hazed. He's content to play along and take it in good grace. Kieran Osmond, however, is furious to find a newbie stumbling into his undercover operation. He has no choice but to rescue Trent, but he has no idea how much trouble that will lead to.

Book excerpt: Chas Rawlings's It Really Is That Complicated is an often personal, indeed intimate, and sometimes hilarious ride from start to finish through the byways and mazes of men's and women's relationships. He guides through the fits and starts-some of the latter false starts-that characterize the dating game, especially with modern-day dating services. He lays out what he calls the horrors of marriage in the degeneration of romance and eroticism into the battle of the sexes in more mundane but often deal-breaking power struggles over control, money, and property. He elaborates on Tolstoy's notion that even this supposedly most sanctified of unions is a form of prostitution-women dispensing sex in return for material gain and security. At the same time, he asks good old Freud's notorious question "My God, what does woman want," since so many of them flee the very rewards they desire along with the generous, often attractive, and accomplished guys who proffer them. He takes us into what in Victorian times was dubbed "My Secret Life," the alleyways of escorts who offer up not only sex but also the companionship and even the no-strings intimacy men crave. Well, for a while at least-until the courtesan gets conflicted and crazy herself. And, despite all of this mayhem, Dr. Rawlings urges us all, men and women, to take risks and hurl ourselves into the fray, implicitly asserting that it is better to "have loved and lost than never to have loved" ... and lived. "Good fun, a great read, and edifying to boot!" John Munder Ross, PhD Author, The Sadomasochism of Everyday Life Coauthor of Tales of Love, Sex and Danger

Book excerpt: Reformed outlaw Carson Stone, in this razor-sharp Western, stakes his claim in the untamed, bloody Idaho Territory, only to find himself trapped in a bullet-riddled nightmare he may not walk away from . . . Former thief and wanted man Carson Stone dreams of a peaceful life on a ranch built by his own hands, but dreams don’t always come without a steep price. To earn a stake, Carson rides west to collect the reward on a claim-jumper. The land is beautiful, but times are hard as the territory is ravaged by the latest Indian war and a mining boom gone bust. When Stone steps in to defend a family ambushed by murdering marauders, he makes a terrifying discovery: one of the hired killers carries a death list full of names and dollar amounts. But the names on this list belong to upstanding citizens, not criminals. When the local sheriff is gunned down in broad daylight, Carson takes on the one job he never wanted—pinning on a lawman’s tin star to protect the innocent. A gang of ruthless killers are storming back to finish their work—and Carson Stone has just moved to the top of the death list.

Book excerpt: How coups happen and why half of them fail. While coups drive a majority of regime changes and are responsible for the overthrow of many democratic governments, there has been very little empirical work on the subject. Seizing Power develops a new theory of coup dynamics and outcomes, drawing on 300 hours of interviews with coup participants and an original dataset of 471 coup attempts worldwide from 1950 to 2000. Naunihal Singh delivers a concise and empirical evaluation, arguing that understanding the dynamics of military factions is essential to predicting the success or failure of coups. Singh draws on an aspect of game theory known as a coordination game to explain coup dynamics. He finds a strong correlation between successful coups and the ability of military actors to project control and the inevitability of success. Examining Ghana’s multiple coups and the 1991 coup attempt in the USSR, Singh shows how military actors project an image of impending victory that is often more powerful than the reality on the ground. In addition, Singh also identifies three distinct types of coup dynamics, each with a different probability of success, based on where within the organization each coup originated: coups from top military officers, coups from the middle ranks, and mutinous coups from low-level soldiers.

Book excerpt: Steven Carter’s father, Don, is dying in New York, and they’ve barely spoken in two years. He rushes home at his mother’s behest and is informed of a memoir written by his father. Although Steven has thought his father was a bit crazy sometimes, his mother, Diane, tells him a different story—one that takes place in Peru, in 1985, when Don discovers a golden cylinder following a mountain-shattering earthquake. The cylinder is approximately twelve inches long and six inches in diameter—so small for something that would change the lives of Don and his wife and destroy so many others. Even in 1985, Don knows the cylinder is important and may hold powerful secrets; yet the secrets remained locked inside. The find quickly becomes something hunted by a variety of crooks and government officials, the subject of a bidding war between the United States and the Soviet Union, the two superpowers of 1985. Although thwarted by thugs, the CIA, the KGB, and the Peruvian government, Don and his mentor, Dr. Anton Steinert, manage to retrieve the cylinder—which is when Steven’s mother gets involved. In the present day, the truth is revealed in the words of a dying man—but whatever became of mysterious golden cylinder?

This is a cracker of a story."—David Cross, co-creator of Mr. Show and actor, Arrested Development Just because you’re off the grid doesn’t mean you’re not a target. In this fiercely inventive novel of suspense and satire, Westworld by way of Django Unchained, a down-on-his-luck helicopter pilot named Huey Palmer finds himself hired by a small cadre of treasure hunters who set out into the Nevada desert to find a gun. It’s not just any gun that eccentric billionaire Ernie Swords wants, it’s a long-lost antique, one with a story worth a fortune, and Swords has the money and the means to get it. Where Huey and his cohorts soon find themselves, however, is stranded far from civilization in a forgotten town dubbed Showdown City, where the infamous gun is one of hundreds readily available for the townsfolk to settle any and all disputes. After living in isolation for over a hundred years, the town has morphed into a warped, lawless community overseen by a delusional tyrant and his quick-draw henchman—and they do not take kindly to strangers. Huey is the one who got them into this mess in Showdown City, and now, with the unlikeliest help, he has a plan to shoot their way out. "Wow. This is a cracker of a story. In fact I am now awaiting the sequel with baited breath (sorry, just ate some nightcrawlers as part of a bet I lost. What's that? It's bated breath? Oh, never mind then)."—David Cross, co-creator of Mr. Show and actor, Arrested Development “Showdown City is a fast-talking slip n’ slide of a ride that grabs you by the balls and doesn’t let go—each page dragging you further into a bizarre-o world full of oddball characters and even odder situations.
