Book excerpt: 'Raw Emotions' is a new handbook for merging a raw food lifestyle with self-inquiry techniques. The author, Angela Stokes, is a world'¿¿renowned raw foodist who went raw in 2002, released 160lbs of excess weight and saw her morbid obesity reversed...that was just the start of her journey of transformation however, which Angela says has since unfolded to affect every aspect of her life.Going raw often represents a big shift in lifestyle, with consequences far beyond simple food choices; emotionally, socially, mentally, spiritually, peoples'¿¿ lives may shift dramatically as they come more into connection with nature and their true selves. Angela says she wrote '¿¿Raw Emotions'¿¿ to support others through such transformations. The reader is gently guided to explore their own relationship with food and their optimal vision for their life, then offered a wealth of suggestions for supporting their transformation, focusing especially on emotional detox and handling cravings/overeating patterns.Through a combination of established self'¿¿development techniques, raw food lifestyle tips and examples from her own experiences, Angela leads the reader along the sometimes rocky path of transformation, towards a brighter life. This book is a truly unique resource, rich with love, compassion and clarity. Indeed, many readers are reporting it is the '¿¿best book they have ever read'¿¿ on the raw food lifestyle. '¿¿Raw Emotions'¿¿ is 256 pages long, full-colour throughout, printed on recycled paper with veggie inks and $1 from the sale of each book is donated to charities that either plant new trees or protect forests.

Book excerpt: My name is Beatriz Aponte. I was born in South Norwalk, CT (nicknamed Betty Boo). I am the middle child out of five raised by a single mother in a very noisy household. As you can imagine, many things were taken from me and privacy was no exception. My only possessions were my thoughts so I spent most of my early years writing my feelings down. In school, I always loved reading and writing. I was always particularly interested in finding out about the author and would create a story behind the story of the writer's life. During my teenage years and early twenties, a piece of paper and pen at times were my only two real friends when the chaos surrounded me. For many years, my audience consisted only of my inner circle (certain friends and cousins) but there was the pleasure of occasional strangers, whom you'll probably never see again. One of my cousins always advised me to take my writing more seriously, but I am my worse critic. However, I realized that I have a gift to express myself with beautifully selected words, and I could also be inspired by what others shared with me. My poetry is no walk in the park. My poetry is the voice of a soul, who has lived many different lives, pain, loss, heartbreak, etc. My poetry, as well as my books, are all based on true stories. I have been writing my entire life; yet, I gave up on the silent childhood dream of being a well-known and acknowledged writer, my true passion. It wasn't until my loss and hitting rock-bottom when I truly challenged myself as a professional writer. Raw Emotions is only the beginning. More shall be revealed because the more I wrote, the more I healed. I thank God for every set-back, for every obstacle and for every single tear. I am a living example of what one can accomplish with faith and determination. I wholeheartedly thank you for contributing to my dream and listening to my story.

Book excerpt: Raw Emotions, the book, words are expressed in its truest state. It doesnt dilute the realities as they appear. Instead, it opens up to a rhythm, a beat, that though sad some of the experiences might be, emotion expressed without any form of pretense will help to inspire or motivate one to a higher level of thought. The book covers a spiritual realm, societal, and personal. You will laugh, you will cry, yes, you will be saddened at times but at the end of that verse you will simply learn to appreciate the power of words in context. Raw Emotions is as it is; its title portrays nothing that is sugar coated. The author hopes that the content of this book will open up a conversation, be it with a stranger, a friend, or a relative. This book will have readers laughing at, The Internet crying at The Flowers That Didnt Bloom, wanting to become like; His Name was Job, looking at the mentally challenged in a different way as one reads: They Say Im Mad. Having pity on those we call bosses when we read Sour Power and for women to reach out and demand the respect they deserve and to applaud the men who do give this respect after reading The Antique Man and those who have never had a Flat Bridge experience, desiring to do so. For the precious moments spent in childhood innocence with a friend who you chose to Remember in a most special way. The collection of literary pieces the author hopes will be widely appreciated by all. She hopes that her writing will be a voice to the voiceless.

Book excerpt: What I have written in this book is a collection of short essays, each pertaining to a specific topic, including many types of love, motorcycles, just life, the dark side, Christmas, and what I will call more of my journey. Included in each of these topics are several short essays that pertain to the abovementioned titles. It is my belief that when writing about an event or a time in your life, there can be an almost equal amount of fiction and truth which can result in an interesting read. I truly enjoyed writing this book and selecting the various topics from hundreds of pieces I have written over the past four decades. My journey through life has been a ride I will never forget. I hope you find a personal meaning in one or more of these pieces that stir up a special time in your life, a smile, or even a sentimental tear. Please feel free to share my words with family and friends. I want to thank you for allowing me and my raw emotions into your life

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh biography of a neglected figure in Southern history who played a pivotal role in the Civil War. In the predawn hours of April 12, 1861, James Chesnut Jr. piloted a small skiff across the Charleston Harbor and delivered the fateful order to open fire on Fort Sumter—the first shots of the Civil War. In The Man Who Started the Civil War, Anna Koivusalo offers the first comprehensive biography of Chesnut and through him a history of honor and emotion in elite white southern culture. Koivusalo reveals the dynamic, and at times fragile, nature of these concepts as they were tested and transformed from the era of slavery through Reconstruction. Best remembered as the husband of Mary Boykin Chesnut, author of A Diary from Dixie, James Chesnut served in the South Carolina legislature and as a US senator before becoming a leading figure in the South's secession from the Union. Koivusalo recounts how honor and emotion shaped Chesnut's life events and the decisions that culminated in the cataclysm of civil war. Challenging the traditional view of honor as a code, Koivusalo illuminates honor's vital but fickle role as a source for summoning, channeling, and expressing emotion in the nineteenth-century South.

Book excerpt: We all have our own ways of handling stressful situations without letting emotions get the best of us, but some ways of coping work better than others. Short-term fixes that help us avoid or numb our emotions may temporarily alleviate sadness and anger, but can also end up causing anxiety, depression, chronic anger, and even physical health problems. Learn and practice the most effective coping skills: Clarifying and acting on your core values Mindfulness and acceptance Detaching from negative thoughts Self-soothing and relaxation exercises Assertiveness and interpersonal skills Gradually facing your strong emotions This book has been awarded The Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies Self-Help Seal of Merit — an award bestowed on outstanding self-help books that are consistent with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) principles and that incorporate scientifically tested strategies for overcoming mental health difficulties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws upon Vygotsky’s idea of perezhivanie, emotions and imagination, and introduces the concepts of subjective sense and subjective configuration. These concepts are crucial for explaining and understanding children’s development from a cultural-historical perspective. A book which theorises the relations between the social and the individual through a study of a child’s perezhivanie, which analyses emotions more holistically, and advances the concepts of subjective sense and subjective configuration, is much needed. This book examines the complexity of human development through a comprehensive elaboration of these concepts, allowing for new insights to be put forward. It doesn’t always follow the chronological order of Vygotsky’s publications, as many of his works remained in the family archives until the 1980s, when his Selected Works were first published in Russian. There has long been a need for a contemporary book on the scholarly treatment of perezhevanie, emotions, and subjectivity, and as such this book revisits dominant representations of these concepts and then puts forward new ways of conceptualising and using them in empirical research. The chapters cover a broad range of case studies where the concepts of perezhivanie, emotions and imagination and subjective sense and subjective configuration are used to give new empirical and theoretical insights into the study of human development.
