Was heißt eigentlich Postmoderne? Im ersten Moment scheint es so, dass diese Begrifflichkeit noch keine klare Definition hat. Gerade im Bezug auf die postmoderne Literatur, hat es den Anschein, dass eine Festlegung mehr als diffizil ist. Selbst bei mühseliger Recherche stößt man immer wieder auf konträre Begrifflichkeiten und dennoch ist es möglich aus einer gewissen Perspektive und langer Betrachtung die postmoderne Literatur klar zu umreißen. Postmodern ist ein aus der ästhetischen und philosophischen Diskussion stammender Begriff, der bei wechselnder Bedeutung, sowohl Richtungen in der Kunst (Architektur), in der Philosophie, der Psychologie, in kulturkritischen und zeitdiagnostischen Arbeiten, eine Lebensweise bzw. Erfahrungsweise vom Leben sowie die Verfasstheit einer nicht mehr modernen Gesellschaft bzw. Kultur bezeichnet. Als gemeinsame Merkmale können gelten: Verzicht auf geschichtsphilosophisch begründete Fortschrittsmodelle; Auflösung bzw. Dezentrierung des Subjektes als Erkenntnis-, Handlungs- und Erfahrungszentrum; Skepsis gegenüber (auch in Philosophie und Sozialwissenschaften) tradierten Wirklichkeitsbegriffen (Verweis auf die Bedeutung der Simulation, J. Beaurdrillard) Zurückweisung von allg. Hans Blumenbergs maágebliches theoretisches Werk "Die Arbeit am Mythos" legitimiert die postmoderne Kehrtwende hinsichtlich der Bewertung des Mythos fr die Literatur. Der Mythos scheint vom ideologisch-totalit„ren und antirationalen Generalverdacht rehabilitiert. Das lange geltende Diktum "Vom Mythos zum Logos" gilt in der Postmoderne nicht mehr uneingeschr„nkt und erf„hrt seine Relativierung. Die allgemeinen Tendenzen postmoderner Literatur werden zu Geburtshelfern eines neuen Zugangs zu den mythischen Stoffen, so die hier vertretene These. Intertextualit„t, Mehrfachkodierung, Autoreflexivit„t, Ironie und Rhizomstruktur als konstitutive Elemente der postmodernen Literatur vereinigen sich auf sinnf„llige Art und Weise mit dem Mythos. Der spielerische und zwanglose Umgang mit der mythischen Stofftradition sowie der postmoderne Verlust der legitimen Autorschaft und die Verpflichtung zur Arbeit am Mythos sind fr Christoph Ransmayrs "Die letzte Welt" konstitutiv, wie die Untersuchung zeigt. In Auseinandersetzung mit Max Horkheimers und Theodor W. Adornos "Dialektik der Aufkl„rung" bewahrheitet sich die These: Als Roman ber und mit dem Mythos steht "Die letzte Welt" in der Tradition von Blumenbergs "Arbeit am Mythos", als Roman der Krise aber zugleich in derjenigen der "Dialektik der Aufkl„rung". So oder so wird der Mythos-Rezipient zu einem Doppelagenten, wie ihn Leslie Fiedler in seinem programmatischen Aufsatz "šberquert die Grenze, schlieát den Graben!" fr die postmoderne Literatur fordert, der sich zwischen der Welt des freien intertextuellen Spiels, des Wunderbaren und der geschichtlichen Verantwortung bewegen muss.

Letztgenannte versucht, für die veränderte Lebenssituation der Menschheit, bedingt durch die fast ausgeschöpften Erkenntnisse von Wissenschaft und Technik, neue gesellschaftsfähige Konzepte zu finden. Angesichts aktueller gesellschaftlicher Probleme sieht sich so mancher Wissenschaftler mit mangelnder Aktualität und Flexibilität bezüglich von Paradigmen konfrontiert. Die Aufmerksamkeit der Wissenschaftler lenkt sich voller Hoffnung auf einzelne kleinere Theoriekonzepte. Doch dies kann insgesamt zum totalen Zerfall der Paradigmen führen. Durch die Vielfalt verschiedener Theoriekonzepte werden die bisher geltenden Paradigmen, Normen und Werte, welche jede Gesellschaft zu jeder Zeit bisher prägten, in Frage gestellt. Die Lage wird zunehmend konfus und unüberschaubar. Das führt zu Unsicherheit und zwangsweise zu Krisenerfahrungen. Die neostrukturalistische Bewegung propagiert sogar fröhlich das Ende der Vernunft. Das Zusammenleben von Menschen verschiedenen Ursprungs, verschiedener Nationalitäten und Kulturen ist in unserer postmodernen und postkolonialen Welt längst Alltag geworden. Dies hat zur Folge, dass sich Nationalitäten und Kulturen mischen und es schwieriger wird, sich der eigene n Kultur bewusst zu bleiben. Die Entwicklung wendet sich weg von der nationalen Identität hin zur globalisierten Massengesellschaft, durch die eine ethnische Hybridität entsteht. Wir befinden uns in einem Moment des Übergangs, in welchem sich Raum und Zeit kreuzen und komplexe Konfigurationen von Differenz und Identität, von Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, Innen und Außen, Einbeziehung und Ausgrenzung erzeugen. Paradoxerweise dominiert nun in der postkolonialen Gesellschaft seitens der ehemaligen Kolonialmächte die Frage nach dem Erhalt der kulturellen Identität, während seitens der kolonisierten Völker verstärkt die Suche nach eigener kultureller Identität erfolgt, die von den Kolonialmächten lange Zeit durchsetzt und unterdrückt worden ist.

Book excerpt: In this English translation and revision of her acclaimed German-language book, Elke Sturm-Trigonakis expands on Goethe's notion of Weltliteratur (1827) to propose that, owing to globalization, literature is undergoing a profound change in process, content, and linguistic practice. Rather than producing texts for a primarily national readership, modern writers can collate diverse cultural, literary, and linguistic traditions to create new modes of expression that she designates as "hybrid texts." The author introduces an innovative framework to analyse these new forms of expression that is based on comparative cultural studies and its methodology of contextual (systemic and empirical) approaches to the study of literature and culture, including the concepts of the macro-and micro-systems of culture and literature. To illustrate her proposition, Sturm-Trigonakis discusses selected literary texts that exhibit characteristics of linguistic and cultural hybridity, the concept of "in-between," and transculturality and thus are located in a space of a "new world literature." Examples include Gastarbeiterliteratur ("migrant literature") by authors such as Chiellino, Shami, and Atabay. The book is important reading for philologists, linguists, sociologists, and other scholars interested in the cultural and linguistic impact of globalization on literature and culture. The German edition of this volume was originally published as Global playing in der Literatur. Ein Versuch über die Neue Weltliteratur (2007) and it has been translated in collaboration with the author by Athanasia Margoni and Maria Kaisar.
