Their common aim is to argue for the historical relevance of various types of ambiguity and dissonance. The first volume focuses on the central paradoxes in ancient henotheism. The term 'henotheism' -- a modern formation after the stereotyped acclamation: #EIS O QEOS# ("one is the god"), common to early Christianity and contemporaneous paganism -- denotes the specific devotion to one particular god without denying the existence of, or even cultic attention to, other gods. After its prime in the twenties and thirties of this century the term fell into disuse. Nonetheless, the notion of henotheism represents one of the most remarkable and significant shifts in Graeco-Roman religion and hence deserves fresh reconsideration.

Mit der Gründung der Universität Sharjah und der Amerikanischen Universität von Sharjah sowie weiterer wichtiger Bildungsinstitutionen in den anderen Emiraten wuchs auch das akademische Angebot. 1998 wurde Sharjah zur arabischen Kulturhauptstadt gewählt. Dies geschah in Anerkennung des lebendigen, kulturfreundlichen Klimas, das sich etwa in der ab 1993 stattfindenden Sharjah Kunstbiennale zeigte oder in der steigenden Bedeutung der Buchmesse von Sharjah. Der Autor selbst erhielt in diesen Jahren zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, unter anderem vom Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, außerdem Doktor- und Ehrendoktortitel von mehreren internationalen Universitäten. 2003 verlieh Frankreich Dr. Sultan al-Qasimi den renommierten Ordre des Arts et des Lettres und würdigte damit seine Leistungen in den in Bereichen Hochschulbildung, Wissenschaft, Kultur und Kunst und seine Unterstützung des Dialogs zwischen Orient und Okzident.

Book excerpt: In Herrschergenealogie und religiöses Patronat, Annette Schmiedchen analyses some 250 inscriptions from the time of the early medieval royal dynasties of the Rāṣṭrakūṭas, Śilāhāras, and Yādavas, who reigned in central India from the 8th to the 13th centuries. The information derived from copper-plate charters and stone inscriptions primarily consists of genealogies of the ruling kings as well as of data regarding their religious foundations and endowments and the donations of other members of society. Annette Schmiedchen shows how genealogical accounts were modified to legitimize individual claims to power, and she convincingly proves that the 10th and 11th centuries were a period of religious change, which witnessed a shift in patronage patterns and a closer link between Vedic Brahmanism and Hindu temple worship.

When looking at pre-modern monarchical societies, one does not expect to observe fundamental dissent directed at the social order as such or at the political system. As a rule, criticism was limited to individual monarchs, their performance and decisions. While discontent could lead to insurrection and rebellion, which normally only culminated in the ruler being replaced by another monarchical figurehead, the subtler methods of voicing criticism were applied within a framework of legality, of a set of customs or of a code of rules of the game and intended to improve the performance of the incumbent or reform his conduct at court. The various forms of verbal or staged censure of rulers in pre-modern monarchical societies are the subject of this volume.

Delivered in summer 1942 at the University of Freiburg, this course was first published in German in 1984 as volume 53 of Heidegger's Collected Works. Revealing for Heidegger's thought of the period are his discussions of the meaning of "the political" and "the national," in which he emphasizes the difficulty and the necessity of finding "one's own" in and through a dialogue with "the foreign." In this context Heidegger reflects on the nature of translation and interpretation.
