Book excerpt: Northwest Florida is home to fifteen rare coastal dune lakes that share an intermittent connection with the Gulf of Mexico. This full-color, 112-page photo book reveals the beauty and rarity of the lakes and the surrounding emerald coast communities along the Scenic Highway 30A area. The dune lakes are mostly freshwater lakes with occasional saltwater exchange from the gulf, creating biologically diverse ecosystems. Natural habitats for a huge variety of flora and fauna, coastal dune lakes are brackish, dynamic, geological treasures in South Walton County, Florida. Author/photographer Ginger Jackson Sinton explores the beauty of the lakes and the diversity of the ecosystems surrounding them. With an eye for nature and the environment, she weaves personal anecdotes through the photo guidebook. The ?Sense of Home? in the subtitle is twofold: the dune lakes habitats of native plants and animals and her own fondness for the colorful locale along the gulf coast.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The coastal dune lakes of northwest Florida are globally rare ecosystems with intermittent connections to the Gulf of Mexico that result in mix of freshwater and estuarine characteristics. They are managed as freshwater lakes, but most lakes are not protected by numeric nutrient criteria. This study examined 13 coastal dune lakes in Walton County, Florida, through multivariate analyses of water quality data using principal component analysis, cluster analysis, and hypothesis testing with a similarity profile. A classification analysis revealed three lake classes: fresh, mixed, and estuarine. A temporal analysis revealed that the lakes did not change class over ten years, with the two exceptions likely the result of physical changes to the Gulf outlets of those lakes. Climatic variation was evident in all lakes, which affected outlet connection type and frequency, and suggested that phytoplankton biomass accumulation was limited by water residence time. Lake morphology, geographic orientation, and density stratification appeared to cause frequent bottom hypoxia in two of the lakes. A comparative analysis showed that the coastal dune lakes are more similar to the regional estuary, Choctawhatchee Bay, than to a regional freshwater lake. Existing water quality data were used to develop proposed numeric nutrient criteria.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Coastal Dune Lakes (CDL) are rare aquatic habitats worldwide. Northwest Florida Coastal Dune Lakes (NWFLCDL) are even more rare and unique habitats due to their characteristic intermittent connection to the Gulf of Mexico. These intermittent connections can cause temporary estuarine environments. While there are policies in place to help protect and preserve the lakes and their surrounding area, little is known about the fish communities of NWFCDL. As traditional sampling to monitor fish communities can be costly and timeintensive, this project aimed to characterize and monitor the fish communities of the NWFLCDL using environmental DNA from water samples and metabarcoding. Metabarcoding involves using generalist molecular markers to describe diversity within a specific taxonomic group. Seventy-two samples across 19 lakes were sequenced using Illumina HiSeq. Bar charts were used to display composition of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) spatially and temporally. Nutrient (phosphorus, nitrogen, chlorophyll concentration) and water quality data (specific conductance, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, salinity) from previous studies and measurements taken in the field were used to describe how abiotic factors relate to the fish communities in the NWFLCDL. This project provides a baseline of information necessary to stress the importance of preserving unique habitats.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continuously growing human population along the world’s coasts will exacerbate the impact of human activities on all coastal environments. Restoration activities will therefore become increasingly important. In particular, sandy shores and coastal dunes will require significant restoration efforts because they are preferred sites for human settlement, industrial and urban development and tourism. With this book experts in the field present a comprehensive review of restoration studies and activities, where ‘successful’ and ‘failed’ studies or approaches from around the world are contrasted and compared. A major asset the book provides is a compendium of studies showing that coastal dune restoration has many definitions and thus leads to many different actions. This volume addresses those with an interest in conservation ecology and biology, coastal dune dynamics and geomorphology, and coastal management who are seeking information on the different strategies for coastal dune restoration applied in different regions of the world. Finally, it will be a valuable resource for coastal scientists and planners, as well as for local and state officials, residents of coastal communities, environmental advocates and developers.

Book excerpt: This book deals with the development of temperate coastal sand dunes and the way these have been influenced by human activity. The different states in which the habitat exists both for the beach/foredune and inland dune are reviewed against the pressures exerted upon them. Options for management are considered and the likely consequences of taking a particular course of action highlighted. These options include traditional approaches to the conservation and management of wildlife and landscapes as well as habitat restoration. The way the value of the areas changes under different management regimes is considered mainly from an environmental perspective. Consideration is given to new approaches to management and restoration including adopting a more dynamic approach. Audience This book will be of interest to academics, students and professionals concerned with policy formulation and /or actively managing coastal areas.
