The author analyzes the causes and the processes of a strong preference for sons, which generates discrimination toward females and results in a shortage of girls and women. China’s higher proportion of men than women is a population characteristic that is shared by very few countries in the world. This demographic masculinity is unprecedented in the documented history of human populations, both in scale and its lasting impact on the numbers and the structure of the population. Despite the economic boom of recent years, many families in China still consider girls to be less important than boys. Although Chinese women have become largely emancipated since the 1950s, they still do not have the same opportunities for social achievement as men, and Chinese society remains fundamentally rooted in highly gendered social and family roles. As a consequence, Chinese girl babies who have the misfortune to be born instead of a long-awaited son go by various names, such as Pandi (literally "awaiting a son"), Laidi ("a son will follow"), or Yehao ("she'll do too"). The book provides a comprehensive review of the situation of women in China’s society and shows that discrimination against girls and women is part of a system of norms and values that traditionally favours males.

Réduire la pauvreté et investir dans le capital humain : le nouveau rôle des filets sociaux en Afrique examine les objectifs, les caractéristiques, la performance et le financement des filets sociaux mis en oeuvre dans 22 pays d’Afrique subsaharienne et identifie les moyens qui permettront aux différents gouvernements et partenaires techniques et financiers de renforcer les systèmes de filets sociaux afin que ces derniers puissent mieux soutenir les populations pauvres et vulnérables. De façon générale, les auteurs ont constaté que les filets sociaux étaient de plus en plus populaires en Afrique et que la transformation des programmes d’aide alimentaire d’urgence en filets sociaux réguliers et prévisibles s’intensifiait, notamment sous forme de programmes de transferts monétaires ciblés et d’interventions d’argent contre travail. Certains pays africains, principalement le Kenya, le Rwanda et la Tanzanie procèdent actuellement à l’unification de leurs programmes au sein d’un système national. The conference was organised in response to the financial crisis of 2008 which started in the United States and Europe, with reverberating effects on a global scale. Economic problems emanating from such crises usually leave major social and structural impacts on important sectors of the society internationally. They affect living standards and constrain the well-being of people, especially in poor countries. Persistent problems include high unemployment, increased debt and low growth in developed countries, as well as greater difficulties in accessing finance for investment in the developing world. There is a need for countries in the South to examine the available options for appropriate national and regional responses to the different problems emanating from the economic crisis. This book attempts to provide ideas on some strategic responses to the disastrous impact of the crisis, while keeping in mind the global common interest of the South. It is hoped that the book will contribute significantly towards the agenda to rethink development and the quest for alternative paradigms for a just, stable and equitable global political, economic and social system.
