Book Synopsis The French Revolution by : Ian Davidson
Download or read book The French Revolution written by Ian Davidson and published by Profile Books. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fall of the Bastille on July 14, 1789 has become the commemorative symbol of the French Revolution. But this violent and random act was unrepresentative of the real work of the early revolution, which was taking place ten miles west of Paris, in Versailles. There, the nobles, clergy and commoners of France had just declared themselves a republic, toppling a rotten system of aristocratic privilege and altering the course of history forever. The Revolution was led not by angry mobs, but by the best and brightest of France's growing bourgeoisie: young, educated, ambitious. Their aim was not to destroy, but to build a better state. In just three months they drew up a Declaration of the Rights of Man, which was to become the archetype of all subsequent Declarations worldwide, and they instituted a system of locally elected administration for France which still survives today. They were determined to create an entirely new system of government, based on rights, equality and the rule of law. In the first three years of the Revolution they went a long way toward doing so. Then came Robespierre, the Terror and unspeakable acts of barbarism. In a clear, dispassionate and fast-moving narrative, Ian Davidson shows how and why the Revolutionaries, in just five years, spiralled from the best of the Enlightenment to tyranny and the Terror. The book reminds us that the Revolution was both an inspiration of the finest principles of a new democracy and an awful warning of what can happen when idealism goes wrong.

Book Synopsis French Liberalism in the 19th Century by : Robert Leroux
Download or read book French Liberalism in the 19th Century written by Robert Leroux and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political and economic liberalism has generally been considered to be of marginal import in France, but at an intellectual level, it is a different story. An exploration of the history of French economic thought shows how a rich intellectual tradition developed during the nineteenth century, which has been previously neglected in English language studies of French thinking. In this important new collection, Robert Leroux brings together key works, both from widely regarded and lesser known authors, whose thinking constituted the core of a singular intellectual movement. These include such figures as Charles Dunoyer, Joseph Garnier, Gustave de Molinari, Yves Guyot, Alexis de Tocqueville, Benjamin Constant and Frédéric Bastiat. Including several works that have never before been published in English, this anthology begins with a full introduction that provides an overview of liberal thought in the nineteenth century, and each text is preceded by a biographical note on the author, and an explanation of the wider significance of the text. This anthology, by bringing to the fore a number of writers and doctrinal positions, seeks to give a coherence, an overall cast to French liberalism without exaggerating its unity. It will be of interest to economists, political scientists, historians, philosophers and sociologists alike.

Book Synopsis Byzantium After Byzantium by : Nicolae Iorga
Download or read book Byzantium After Byzantium written by Nicolae Iorga and published by Center For Romanian Studies. This book was released on 2023-01-24 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in French in 1935, the author's formula Byzantium after Byzantium defines several centuries of world history. Iorga points out the great contributions of Byzantine civilization to the Western world, especially during the Renaissance. He demonstrates that Byzantium survived through its people and local autonomies, as well as through its exiles--clerics, scholars, merchants, and political officials. One of the most important expressions of this was found in the Romanian principalities where Greeks from the Phanar district of Istanbul played a major role in Romanian political life, defining an entire period of Romanian history--the Phanariot Period. They continued the Byzantine ideas, aspirations, education, and way of life. All of this allows us to speak of a Byzantium after Byzantium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conservatives or Socialists? The labours of Parliament in ruining Ireland would not have ceased yet, had it not been for the fact that the united ingenuity of both parties is unable to solve the problem of extracting blood from a stone. Having squeezed the lemon dry, Parliament is now allowed to rest from its destructive duties. The landlords have been recently advised to agitate; but it is far too late for agitation, for now nothing can save them. It is for the purpose of preventing the people of England from finding themselves in the position of the Irish landlords, that I take this opportunity Of suggesting that agitation in England should come now, and not after the principle of expediency has been accepted by the Legislature; not after every succeeding measure, however wild, has been defended on the ground that Parliament has already accepted what it is pleased to term the principle of Compensation. Download or read book The Missionary Outreach of the West Indian Church written by Horace O. Russell and published by Research in Religion and Family. This book was released on 2000 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Missionary Outreach of the West Indian Church is the story of Jamaican Baptists, ex-slaves who, four years after Emancipation (1838), established a witness in the Cameroons (West Africa) in cooperation with their British pastors and with the reluctant aid of the Baptist Missionary Society of London. Professor Russell analyzes the relationship between the undertaking of the mission and the new self-awareness of a freed people. The institutions created to achieve their aims are discussed and their fortunes are followed amid the chaotic ecclesiastical, economic, and political happenings consequent upon the Anglo/Hispanic rivalry at the time. The book is also a study of what happens when a mission-field becomes a mission agency with missionaries of its own.
