Book excerpt: The first retrospective monograph on Maximilien Luce (1858-1941) in nearly two decades, this publication surveys the accomplishments of this significant French Neo-Impressionist painter. Working first as a printmaker, Luce devoted himself to painting around 1880. Shortly after, in 1887, Camille Pissarro, who shared his anarchist politics, introduced Luce to the Neo-Impressionist group, which included Georges Seurat and Henri-Edmond Cross. Luce adopted the Divisionist or Pointillist method to create almost violent light effects, infusing the technique with a newfound passion at some remove from, for example, Seurat's more detached approach. From a sunset on the banks of the Seine to the flames blasting from a furnace, Luce's powerfully colorful treatment of his subjects can now be seen to have prefigured the Fauvism of Henri Matisse and André Derain. The book unites nearly 80 works by the artist, including paintings that reveal Luce's fascination with Baron Haussmann's recreation of Paris.

Book excerpt: This book assesses the Statute for a European Cooperative Society (SCE) regarding agricultural activities by comparing how specific questions arising in this context must be dealt with under the Italian and Austrian legal systems. In this regard, Council Regulation (EC) No. 1435/2003, of 22 July 2003, on the Statute for a European Cooperative Society (SCE), is used as a tool for the structured analysis of various aspects of agricultural cooperatives. However, a comparison is only meaningful if the results are made comparable on the basis of a previously defined standard. Accordingly, the study uses, on one hand, a cooperative model developed by European legal scholars that defines general guidelines on how cooperatives should function (PECOL). On the other, the results are presented in connection with economic considerations to discuss how efficient rules can be developed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Belgian painter Théo Van Rysselberghe (1862-1926) is one of the most emblematic figures of the neo-Impressionist movement, together with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. With his delicate touch, refined chromatic sense and great elegance--above all in his portraits--he produced some of the finest works of Divisionism. Yet Van Rysselberghe's oeuvre is not limited to his best-known works of his neo-Impressionist period (1888-96). Distancing himself from the strict division of colors, he subsequently moved towards a more fluid style that nevertheless retained his signature luminosity. His portraits and female nudes, the landscapes he brought back from his numerous trips to Morocco, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, all reveal an insatiable curiosity and an immense talent, coupled with a rare sensibility. This generous new catalogue presents many works that have never been published before.

Book excerpt: The degree of development reached by cooperatives of different sectors throughout the world, which among others led to the UN declaring 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives, needs to be accompanied by a similar development of corresponding legislation. To this end, a better knowledge of cooperative law from the comparative point of view, as has already been established for other types of enterprises, becomes of great importance. This book strives to fill this gap, and is divided into four parts. The first part offers an analytic and conceptual framework with which to understand, study and assess cooperative law from a transnational and comparative perspective. The second part includes several chapters dealing with attempts to harmonize cooperative laws. The third part contains an overview of more than 30 national cooperative laws, while the last part summarizes and compares these national cooperative laws, thus laying the foundation for a comparative cooperative law doctrine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How France's elites used soft power to pursue their imperial ambitions in the nineteenth century After Napoleon's downfall in 1815, France embraced a mostly informal style of empire, one that emphasized economic and cultural influence rather than military conquest. A Velvet Empire is a global history of French imperialism in the nineteenth century, providing new insights into the mechanisms of imperial collaboration that extended France's power from the Middle East to Latin America and ushered in the modern age of globalization. David Todd shows how French elites pursued a cunning strategy of imperial expansion in which conspicuous commodities such as champagne and silk textiles, together with loans to client states, contributed to a global campaign of seduction. French imperialism was no less brutal than that of the British. But while Britain widened its imperial reach through settler colonialism and the acquisition of far-flung territories, France built a "velvet" empire backed by frequent military interventions and a broadening extraterritorial jurisdiction. Todd demonstrates how France drew vast benefits from these asymmetric, imperial-like relations until a succession of setbacks around the world brought about their unravelling in the 1870s. A Velvet Empire sheds light on France's neglected contribution to the conservative reinvention of modernity and offers a new interpretation of the resurgence of French colonialism on a global scale after 1880. This panoramic book also highlights the crucial role of collaboration among European empires during this period—including archrivals Britain and France—and cooperation with indigenous elites in facilitating imperial expansion and the globalization of capitalism.

Book excerpt: Examines the theoretical bases and the social fabric that spawned French neo-impressionism, best represented by Seurat, Signac, Pissarro, Angrand, and Luce. Shows how they rejected the spontaneity of the impressionists to embrace scientific theories promulgated by anarchists Peter Kropotkin and Jean Grave, and how the movement broke up when their concern for social justice was supplanted by demands for more militant, didactic art.
