These guys really had some cajones, they did their thing right under the noses of the law. They made seven flights to Colombia and back and never got caught, partly because they were smart and planned well, partly because of dumb luck. The book is fast paced, it all takes place in less than one year. Along the way there is plenty of adventure, not everything goes as planned. There is some romance thrown in, these guys knew how to enjoy life with the piles of money they accumulated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook describes the basic neuroanatomy of the laboratory mouse. The reader will be guided through the anatomy of the mouse nervous system with the help of abundant microphotographs and schemata. Learning objectives and summaries of key facts at the beginning of each chapter provide the reader with an overview on the most important information. As transgenic mice are one of the most widely used paradigms when it comes to modeling human diseases, a basic understanding of the neuroanatomy of the mouse is of considerable value for all students and researchers in the neurosciences and pharmacy, but also in human and veterinary medicine. Accordingly, the authors have included, whenever possible, comparisons of the murine and the human nervous system. The book is intended as a guide for all those who are about to embark on the structural, histochemical and functional phenotyping of the mouse’s central nervous system. It can serve as a practical handbook for students and early researchers, and as a reference book for neuroscience lectures and laboratories.

Book excerpt: Only five years ago, nobody in his right mind would have consid ered publishing a book on reeler as a model for brain develop ment. Although this interesting mutation has been with us for half a century, it is fair to say that, in spite of a wave of enthusiasm in the late sixties and early seventies, generated primarily by Sidman, Caviness and colleagues, studies of reeler mice fell pro gressively out of fashion during the next two decades. All that changed almost overnight when the cloning of the reeler gene, dubbed reelin, was reported in Tom Curran's laboratory in 1995. The fact that the same gene was identified at the same time independently by two other groups using positional cloning sug gested strongly that reelin was the right candidate. Although the key experiments of transgenic rescue have not been made (and perhaps will never be), the equation "reeler is reelin" has been established beyond reasonable doubt, as alterations of the reelin gene and/or its expression have been found in at least five alleles of reeler and in the mutation Shaking Rat Kawasaki (SRK), an ortholog of reeler.

The subject matter has been divided into five main parts (each of which is headed by a recognized expert in the field): * Initiation: Extracellular and Membrane Events * Transmission: Effectors and Cytosolic Events * Nuclear Responses: Gene Expression and Translation * Events in Intracellular Compartments * Cell-Cell and Cell-Matrix Interactions Covered in extensive detail, these areas will appeal to a broad, cross-disciplinary audience interested in the structure, biochemistry, molecular biology and pathology of cellular effectors. Tabular and well-illustrated, the Handbook will serve as an in-depth reference for this complex and evolving field. Tabular and well illustrated, the Handbook will serve as an in-depth reference for this complex and evolving field! * Contains approximately 470 articles * Provides well-organized sections on each essential area in signaling * Includes discussion on everything from ligand/receptor interactions to organ/organism responses * Extremely user-friendly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge has been described as being like an expanding sphere with the volume of knowledge contacting a surface on the unknown. This new comprehensive review of the many fields of basic and clinical research that impact our understanding of multiple sclerosis has its basis in this premise. In doing research on MS, it is not enough to know clinical neurology or neurochemistry or neuroanatomy or pathology; it is important to understand the many other areas that relate to them. This volume provides an overview of MS-related research and will benefit many investigators in the field and help to advance our efforts to cure this, thus far intractable, disease. It is now more than 160 years since the first clinical-pathological descriptions of cases of multiple sclerosis and more than 130 years since the classic clinical description and development of diagnostic criteria by Charcot, yet MS remains an enigma. After decades of intense effort to find the cause, no cause has been clearly identified and the disease remains poorly understood. Despite the introduction of immunomodulatory therapies and immunosuppressive regimens, MS remains a devastating disease. While a great deal of progress has been made, much remains to be done. Our understanding of the disease remains limited, treatments remain inadequate, and comprehensive management all too rare. This volume is an overview of the basic sciences as they relate to MS and will provide clinicians and investigators a better understanding of the basic aspects of the disease. While it is possible to find excellent reviews of almost any aspect of MS, few attempts have been made to bring these very different aspects together in a single source. This volume is a companion to Multiple Sclerosis: Diagnosis, Medical Management, and Rehabilitation, edited by Drs. Jack S. Burks and Kenneth P. Johnson. Together, they represent an attempt to comprehensively cover the field of MS from basic research to comprehensive management and to provide a broad overview for those interested in understanding the disease better or in pursuing MS research.

In particular, children have been fond of reading and listening to stories since childhood, and they keep insisting on telling stories from their grandmothers. This collection of traditional and popular moral stories for children, written with this vision, represents the true spirit of our culture and society. Through these stories, children can learn about different aspects of their lives. I urge the children to read the stories carefully and apply the teachings of morality and wisdom learned through the stories to their lives. Read stories and gain knowledge with pleasure.
