Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE regard which every one has for the old French provinces is by no means inexplicable. Out of them grew the present solidarity of republican France, but in spite of it the old limits of demarcation are not yet expunged. One and all retain to-day their individual characteristics, manners, and customs, and also a certain subconscious atmosphere. Many are the casual travellers who know Normandy and Brittany, at least know them by name and perhaps something more, but how many of those who annually skim across France, in summer to Switzerland and in winter to the Riviera or to Italy, there to live in seven-franca-day pensions, and drink a particularly vile brand of tea, know where Brittany leaves off and Normandy begins, or have more than the vaguest of vague notions as to whether the charming little provincial capital of Nantes, on the Loire, is in Brittany or in Poitou. A recollection of their school-day knowledge of history will help them on the latter point, but geography will come in and puzzle them still more. There are many French writers, and painters for that matter, who have made these provinces famous. Napoleon, perhaps, set the fashion, when he wrote, in 1786, that eulogy beginning: “It is now six or seven years since I left my native country.” More familiar is the “Native Land” of Lamartine. Camille Flammarion wrote “My Cradle,” meaning Champagne; Dumas wrote of Villers-Cotterets, and Chateaubriand and Renan of Brittany; but head and shoulders above them all stand out Frederic Mistral and his fellows of the Félibres at Avignon and Arles.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles in Brittany The book is a record of many journeys and many rambles by road and rail around the coast, and in no sense is it put forth either as a special or as a complete survey Of things and matters Breton. Many lights and shadows have been thrown upon the screen from various points, but the effort has been made to blend them all into a pleasing whole, which 'shall supplement the guide-books Of convention. It were not possible to do more than has been attempted within the limits Of a volume such as this, and therefore many details of routes, and historical data Of a relative sort, and a certain amount of topographical information have been scattered through the volume or placed in the appendix, in the belief that such information is greatly needed in a work at tempting to purvey travel talk, even in small measure. Book excerpt: From a New York Times bestselling author, a fresh, female-centered take on the Robin Hood legend in which a young noblewoman, like the legendary hero, becomes an outlaw fighting for social justice. Perfect for fans of Marissa Meyer and Sarah J. Maas. When sixteen-year-old Silvie’s brother takes over management of their family’s vast estates, Silvie feels powerless to stop his abuse of the local commoners. Her dearest friend asks her to run away to the woods with him, and soon a host of other villagers join them. Together, they form their own community and fight to right the wrongs perpetrated by the king and his noblemen. Perfect for fans of fairy tale retellings or anyone who loves a strong female lead, this gorgeously written take on the Robin Hood tale goes beyond the original’s focus on economic justice to explore love, gender, the healing power of nature, and what it means to be a family.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Ramble Into Brittany, Vol. 1 of 2 The title of this work was chosen with reference to the desire, when about to bid 3 last farewell to France, of gaining a few glimpses of yet (by me) unvisited Brittany. After taking a zigzag route to Paris - the English tourist's first and last resting place, -and making a few notes, as usual, in that magnificent capital, I started for the Land's End, and rambled from town to torrent, from rock to ruin, till I had marked all the differences between La Bretagne and our Britannia. The pages that follow have been filled from notes made from hour to hour, in this tour of some fifteen hundred miles, as aids to memory. And material for frequent afterthought a source of information to which the reading world is becoming, at the present period, more and more indebted, accordingly as we find adequately informed men, and, be it said, equally gifted women, communicating through various. Book excerpt: At a family meeting, Ror declares her purpose: She is an artist. But she doesn’t really know what that means. Raised on a commune, she’s never attended a day of school, and has seen little of the outside world. What she knows best is drawing. To her, it’s like breathing; it’s how she makes sense of the world. When her father torches the commune—and himself—Ror’s life changes. She, her mother and sister end up in a homeless residence in Manhattan, where she runs into trouble—and love—with Trey, the leader of Noise Ink, a graffiti crew. On the city’s streets, and in its museums and galleries, Ror finds herself pulled in different directions. Her father wanted her to make classic art. Noise Ink insists she stay within their lines. Her art teacher urges her to go to college. What does she want? Ror’s journey is a seamless blend of words and pictures, cinematic in its scope--a sharp-edged, indelible work of art that will live inside your head.
