Book excerpt: Adolescence is indisputably a turbulent time for both boys and girls. But statistics show that there is an overwhelming number of troubled boys - at high risk for depression and suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, violence and loneliness. What do boys need that they're not getting? In this ground-breaking book, leading child psychologists Dan Kindlon and Michael Thompson cut through the glib rhetoric about 'boy biology' to show that there are sure ways for parents to help their sons travel the difficult road to manhood. Their practical and positive solutions to the problems that have plagued parents for years include: - Talk to boys directly in their own language - Recognize and accept their high activity levels - Use discipline to guide and build character, not to punish - Encourage them to control their anger by talking about their emotions - Teach boys that there are many ways to be a man 'Clearly and accessibly written, and suggest practical strategies to help parents and teachers' Guardian

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about helping troubled young people who are searching separately for security, identity, and purpose in their lives. Childhood and adolescence are pivotal stages in the quest to belong, to become somebody, and to be worth something. Children need stimulation, affection, and guidance in order to develop their potentials, but many are reared in environments that deprive them of these nutriments. Adolescents approach the threshold of independence with only the experiences gained from childhood; many lack the support of significant actions. Those who encounter difficulty in navigating through these turbulent years are to be identified by society as troubled or troublesome. These children and youth present challenges that do not yield to simple panaceas. Although no simple approach holds all the answers, bridging various concepts of education and treatment offers the best opportunity for creating positive changes. The authors refer to this process as -re-education- with full awareness that this term has been used in a variety of philosophical contexts including behavioral, ecological, and psychodynamic views.

Book excerpt: Powerlessness in the lives of individual Christians and the Church in this generation is disturbing and disheartening. It is the reason the devil is having a field day, stealing, killing and destroying unabated. The hallmark of Christ's followers should be the possession and demonstration of spiritual power. Christ Himself was power personified. His life and ministry were eloquent testimonies to the surpassing and unsurpassable power of God. Lack of spiritual power in the life of His followers is therefore a paradox. This book equips you with all you need to become a carrier and demonstrator of God's power. It is a potent weapon for you to use in dislodging powerlessness from your life and moving into the realm of power generation and exploits.

Book excerpt: "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." Hebrews 11:6 KJV GENESIS …imagine stepping onto the shoreline and finding out it's Heaven Have you ever read your Bible and stop, go back to the beginning and reread it? Do you ever find that there is no wow? No impact. No overwhelming thought that strikes you because it is so hard to understand. You're not alone. Memories growing up with my grandmother, the Reverend Ada Caston Slaton Bonds, shed complete light on the many Books of the Bible. She was a great storyteller, just like Jesus, when he spread the word of God in parables. Be it Easter, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving or Christmas, she always had a story to tell and practiced her Sunday morning sermons preaching her discourse to my brothers and me just outside Mansfield, Louisiana. No longer do you or your children have to read the Bible until something "hits" you. My first novel in the Sunday School Series portrays a fresh approach to the scriptures…a down to earth storytelling of the words of God beginning with, well, the beginning. The writings in the Book of Genesis have sometimes been referred to as the seed plot of the entire Bible. As complicated as it could be in scripture form, most of the major doctrines of the Bible are introduced to all of us in this so-called seed form in this book. Along with the fall of mankind, God's promise of salvation and redemption are put in plain words in this first novel in the Sunday School Series of the Holy Book. The doctrines of creation, the accusation of sin, justification, grace, faith, and much more are all addressed in this Book of origins. Almost all my life, Genesis was best explained to me in the form of a 1956 movie, Cecil B. DeMille's, The Ten Commandments. There's a saying today, don't always believe what you read on the Internet or what you see on the silver screen. Hollywood told the story of Genesis, but as they always do, with a flair for capturing the attention of moviegoers. It was the highest-grossing film of the 1950s and the seventh highest-grossing film of all time. By the way, it has been one of my most favorite movies of all time, as well. This first novel in the series captures the first Book of the Bible, Genesis, and tells the story of the beginning in straightforward and easy to understand stories. Where did we come from? Why are we here? Where are we going? GENESIS, no doubt, appeals to the theologian, the historian, the scientist, the housewife, the farmer, and the man or woman of God himself. All in all, it is a fitting beginning for God's story of his plan for mankind and an appropriate opening for the first book in this Sunday School Education Series by Sidney St. James. Appropriate for children twelve years of age and older.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred taxis lined up on Church Street in Oslo on November 26, 1942, deployed in order to round up the city's Jews and send them to Auschwitz. This reality anchors God of Sense and Traditions of Non-Sense: it is theology from a Holocaust perspective. The brash Elihu excoriating Job for his insistence that he is owed an explanation for the calamities that have befallen him. This is the book's opening salvo. Job speaking of a God of sense, Elihu and Job's three friends inaugurating a tradition of non-sense: this is the existential and theological predicament. The problem of finite suffering in this life addressed in the theological tradition with the prospect of infinite, endless suffering, in this book described as a key element in Traditions of Non-Sense. Back to the millions of Jews, among them 188 women and 42 children from Oslo, deported, gassed, and cremated--in God of Sense this is not seen as a problem that defeats belief, but as the reality that demands a religious and theological account of human existence.
