Book Synopsis The Way of the Disciple by : Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis
Download or read book The Way of the Disciple written by Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2009-10-27 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores in depth six Gospel scenes so as to discover in these the essential elements of Christian discipleship. It describes the basic requirements for receiving the Word of God effectively in our hearts: namely, that we "become wet clay in God's hands", so that God can impress upon us any form he chooses. It also contemplates the vital position of the Mother of the Lord in the life of his disciples. The author shows that the call to discipleship is above all an invitation to intimate companionship with Jesus, as we read in Mark: "Jesus called to him those whom he desired... in order that they might be with him" (3:14-15). What we normally call the "active apostolate" can never be an end in itself, but only the fruits of a life of prayer and adoration. These are what must be at the heart of a disciple's life, which can never be swept up by mere activism.
Download or read book The Disciple written by John Stott and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can Christians effectively engage today's world while staying true to Scripture? Calling us to listen well to both the Word and the world, John Stott shows how Christianity can preserve its authentic identity and remain relevant to current realities. With the God's Word for Today series, pastor Tim Chester has updated Stott's classic book The Contemporary Christian and made it accessible to new generations of readers. In The Disciple, Stott explores four often-neglected aspects of Christian discipleship in light of Scripture. First, followers of Jesus should be good listeners—to God, one another, and the world. Second, both the mind and emotions have an indispensable place in discipleship, and we should understand how they relate to each other. Third, how do we discover God's will for our lives, and what does the Bible tell us about guidance, vocation, and ministry? Finally, the primary distinguishing mark of a Christian is the first fruit of the Spirit: love. Following Christ encompasses all of life, and today's world desperately needs disciples who embrace their full God-given potential.

For the pastor who is ready to put words into action, The Disciple-Making Pastor offers the inspiration and practical know-how to do so. Bill Hull shows pastors the obstacles they will face, what disciples really look like, the pastor's role in producing them, and the practices that lead to positive change. He also offers a six-step coaching process to help new disciples grow in commitment and obedience and practical ideas to integrate disciple making into the fabric of the church.

Book excerpt: DISCIPLE is a program of disciplined Bible study aimed at developing strong Christian leaders. The study gives the Old and New Testaments equal time, emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as a revelation of God. DISCIPLE draws upon the work of scholars, the personal Bible reading and study of the participant, and dynamic group discussion to aid understanding of the Bible. The first study in the program is DISCIPLE: BECOMING DISCIPLES THROUGH BIBLE STUDY, a thirty-four week overview of the entire Bible. Commitment and Time Involved Three and one-half to four hours of independent study each week (40 minutes daily for leaders and 30 minutes daily for group members) in preparation for weekly group meetings. Attendance at weekly 2.5 hour meetings. Study Manual Each member of the group needs a study manual and a Bible. The Bible is the text for the study and the study manual will guide group members in their study and preparation for the weekly group session. The study manual also includes suggestions for individual and study-related activities. Space is provided for taking notes while reading Scripture, for recording thoughts and questions arising out of daily study, and for notes during the weekly group session. The titles of the sessions along with theme words and theme verses, and major persons, events, and topics will set the sequence of the biblical story in the minds of the participants. Book Synopsis Zapata's Disciple by : Martín Espada
Download or read book Zapata's Disciple written by Martín Espada and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-15 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ferocious acumen with which the award-winning poet Martín Espada attacks issues of social injustice in Zapata’s Disciple makes it no surprise that the book has been the subject of bans in both Arizona and Texas, targeted for its presence in the Mexican American Studies curriculum of Tucson’s schools and for its potential to incite a riot among Texas prison populations. This new edition of Zapata’s Disciple, which won the 1999 Independent Publisher Book Award for Essay / Creative Nonfiction, opens with an introduction in which the author chronicles this history of censorship and continues his lifelong fight for freedom of expression. A dozen of Espada’s poems, tender and wry as they are powerful, interweave with essays that address the denigration of the Spanish language by American cultural arbiters, castigate Nike for the exploitation of its workers, reflect upon National Public Radio’s censorship of Espada’s poem about Mumia Abu- Jamal, and more. Zapata’s Disciple is a potent assault on the continued marginalization of Latinos and other poor and working-class citizens in American society, and the collection breathes with a revolutionary zeal that is as relevant now as when it was first published.
Download or read book The Disciple written by Robert Burns and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-06-10 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one man play which tells the story of the life of Christ through the eyes of one of his disciples. A Galilean businessman meets a new and inspirational teacher in the area and becomes one of his followers. Through this play he shares his experiences as he witnesses some amazing miracles: people cured, water turned into wine, multitudes fed, storms calmed. We learn something of the camaraderie between the disciples as well as the occasional friction between them. We also develop a sense of the growing opposition to the group and their message, an opposition that will eventually lead to tragedy and loss. As our disciple struggles to understand the real meaning of the teaching and ministry of his master how will he react? Will he return to his old lifestyle, inspired but not completely changed by events he has experienced or will he indeed be able to 'drink from the same cup' as his master?
Download or read book The Disciple written by Lucy Peppiatt and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Disciple, Lucy Peppiatt addresses the question of what it means to "become like Jesus" in the context of our everyday lives. Through the gifts of the Word and the Spirit, our communities, and our circumstances in life, God forms us into the likeness of his Son and leads us into a life of freedom, in relationship with the Father, where we experience what it means to become truly and fully human. The Disciple brings together theological depth, stories from Scripture, and examples from everyday life to paint a picture of the dynamic work of God in our lives and how we might respond to his work so that we are brought into the richness and reality of the life of the kingdom. Following Jesus means being apprenticed and schooled in the ways of freedom and the fullness of life. The Disciple combines theology and practice, including suggestions of how to respond in practical ways, as individuals, and in our communities, to the calling of God on our lives to "follow him."
