Book excerpt: A milestone in City Lights history, David Meltzer's When I Was a Poet is number sixty of the famous Pocket Poets Series. The title work is an ambitious late masterpiece from a legendary poet at the height of his powers, a spiritual assessment of the meaning of a lifetime of writing poetry. Also included are reminiscences of California bohemian life, a series of mystical amulets, and profound meditations on love, loss, aging and death. Associated with the Beat Generation and late '60s psychedelia, musician, novelist and editor David Meltzer is one of America's foremost living poets. "Meltzer is a prolific poet of many modes and voices, quite a few of which are here, love poems, poems out of childhood, a series of "amulets," cryptic short wisdom poems, and much more. These are all tasty, often ironic and/or mysterious, pieces of Davidness to be savored . . . "--Richard Silberg, Poetry Flash

Book excerpt: She’s trained with him. She’s hunted with him. She’s killed with him. Now he’s missing. After the loss of her mother years ago, he is all she has left, and she will do whatever she can to find him. They had made a pact, a rule never to be broken: If we don't hear anything after three days, we investigate. Three days passed. Now Bethany must take all her years of training, all the skills she developed, and leave the place she’s called home her whole life. What begins as a simple search and rescue soon turns into a violent meandering through the darkest recesses of the Pacific Northwest underworld as Bethany pieces together cryptic clues from her father's journal. Far from everything and everyone she knows and loves, Bethany must navigate this realm of secrets and peril—and for the first time, she must do it alone. Every step brings her closer to the truth but closer to danger. This is the way of things when infernal cults and hellish fiends are involved. Vampires are not forgiving. Rain City Gothic is a story of devotion, betrayal, and redemption. It is a story of the human spirit and the lengths we will go to save the ones we love.

Book excerpt: When Jacob left home for a new life, he pretty much forgot all about Maryfield, North Carolina. But Maryfield never forgot him. Or forgave him. After a failed business venture in Boston, Jacob Logan comes back to the small Southern town of his childhood and takes up residence in the isolated house he grew up in. Here, the air is still. The nights are black. And his parents are buried close by. It should feel like home—but something is terribly wrong. Jacob loses all his belongings in a highway accident. His car is stolen from his driveway, yet he never hears a sound. The townspeople seem guarded and suspicious. And Carl, the property caretaker with so many secrets, is unnervingly accommodating. Then there are the fireflies that light the night skies . . . and die as they come near Jacob’s home. If it weren’t for the creaking sounds after dark, or the feeling that he is being watched, Jacob would feel so alone. He shouldn’t worry. He’s not. And whatever’s with him isn’t going to let him leave home ever again.

Book excerpt: One beautiful summer afternoon, Jody Linder receives shocking news: The man convicted of murdering her father is being released from prison and returning to the small town of Rose, Kansas. It has been twenty-three years since that stormy night when her father was shot and killed and her mother disappeared, presumed dead. Neither the protective embrace of Jody’s three uncles nor the safe haven of her grandparents’ ranch could erase the pain caused by Billy Crosby on that catastrophic night. Now Billy Crosby is free, thanks to the efforts of his son, Collin, a lawyer who has spent most of his life trying to prove his father’s innocence. Despite their long history of carefully avoiding each other in such an insular community, Jody and Collin find that they share an exclusive sense of loss. As Jody revisits old wounds, startling truths emerge about her family’s tragic past. But even through struggle and hardship, she still dares to hope for a better future—and maybe even love. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Some bookstores are filled with stories both inside and outside the bindings. These are places of sanctuary, even redemption---and Jeremy Mercer has found both amid the stacks of Shakespeare & Co." ---Paul Collins, author of Sixpence House: Lost in a Town of Books In a small square on the left bank of the Seine, the door to a green-fronted bookshop beckoned. . . . With gangsters on his tail and his meager savings in hand, crime reporter Jeremy Mercer fled Canada in 1999 and ended up in Paris. Broke and almost homeless, he found himself invited to a tea party amongst the riffraff of the timeless Left Bank fantasy known as Shakespeare & Co. In its present incarnation, Shakespeare & Co. has become a destination for writers and readers the world over, trying to reclaim the lost world of literary Paris in the 1920s. Having been inspired by Sylvia Beach's original store, the present owner, George Whitman, invites writers who are down and out in Paris to live and dream amid the bookshelves in return for work. Jeremy Mercer tumbled into this literary rabbit hole and found a life of camaraderie with the other eccentric residents, and became, for a time, George Whitman's confidante and right-hand man. Time Was Soft There is one of the great stories of bohemian Paris and recalls the work of many writers who were bewitched by the City of Light in their youth. Jeremy's comrades include Simon, the eccentric British poet who refuses to give up his bed in the antiquarian book room, beautiful blonde Pia, who contributes the elegant spirit of Parisian couture to the store, the handsome American Kurt, who flirts with beautiful women looking for copies of Tropic of Cancer, and George himself, the man who holds the key to it all. As Time Was Soft There winds in and around the streets of Paris, the staff fall in and out of love, straighten bookshelves, host tea parties, drink in the more down-at-the-heels cafés, sell a few books, and help George find a way to keep his endangered bookstore open. Spend a few days with Jeremy Mercer at 37 Rue de la Bucherie, and discover the bohemian world of Paris that still bustles in the shadow of Notre Dame. "Jeremy Mercer has captured Shakespeare & Co. and its complicated owner, George Whitman, with remarkable insight. Time Was Soft There is a charming memoir about living in Whitman's Shakespeare & Co. and the strange, broken, lost, and occasionally talented, eccentrics and residents of this Tumblewood Hotel." ---Noel Riley Fitch, author of Sylvia Beach and the Lost Generation: A History of Literary Paris in the Twenties & Thirties "There does seem to be something about the odd ducks that work at bookstores. Jeremy Mercer has captured the story of a wonderful, unique store that could only be born out of a love for books and the written word." --- Liz Schlegel, the Book Revue bookshop, Huntington, New York

Simply one of the finest books ever written about being down on your luck. Don Carpenter’s Hard Rain Falling is a tough-as-nails account of being down and out, but never down for good—a Dostoyevskian tale of crime, punishment, and the pursuit of an ever-elusive redemption. The novel follows the adventures of Jack Levitt, an orphaned teenager living off his wits in the fleabag hotels and seedy pool halls of Portland, Oregon. Jack befriends Billy Lancing, a young black runaway and pool hustler extraordinaire. A heist gone wrong gets Jack sent to reform school, from which he emerges embittered by abuse and solitary confinement. In the meantime Billy has joined the middle class—married, fathered a son, acquired a business and a mistress. But neither Jack nor Billy can escape their troubled pasts, and they will meet again in San Quentin before their strange double drama comes to a violent and revelatory end.

Book excerpt: Delta of Dead River sets out to rescue her family from a ruthless dictator rising to power in the Wastes and discovers a secret that will reshape her world in this postapocalyptic Western mashup for fans of Mad Max and Gunslinger Girl. Delta of Dead River has always been told to hide her back, where a map is branded on her skin to a rumored paradise called the Verdant. In a wasteland plagued by dust squalls, geomagnetic storms, and solar flares, many would kill for it--even if no one can read it. So when raiders sent by a man known as the General attack her village, Delta suspects he is searching for her. Delta sets out to rescue her family but quickly learns that in the Wastes no one can be trusted--perhaps not even her childhood friend, Asher, who has been missing for nearly a decade. If Delta can trust Asher, she just might decode the map and trade evidence of the Verdant to the General for her family. What Delta doesn't count on is what waits at the Verdant: a long-forgotten secret that will shake the foundation of her entire world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a dream coming true. Writing in English fulfils my purpose in life. To make dreams come true is an important aspect of my life, and I do believe, something that defines me. To me writing is more than just expression, it’s a duty I have to my readers, to the world. The Universe Within is a dream coming true, a dream you are a part of too. Thank you for reading me. Sara Vanessa C. Rodrigues da Silva From early age, I enjoy writing prose and poetry. My mom tells me that when I was turning three, I asked for a typing machine for my birthday. She asked me what for to which I replied “to write many books”. At that time, I didn’t even know how to write my name. In third grade, I wrote a dialogue between me and the sea that won a class contest. That day changed my life. I was sitting at my parents’ living room’s table and I felt inspiration running through me. Being acknowledged in my class as one of the best writers was my first great achievement in life. From that day on, I knew writing would be a part of my life forever. Ever since then, from being among friends during my teenagerhood, writing poems on a coffee shop’s napkin, to asking in restaurants for a piece of paper and a pen out of the blue, writing has been an intrinsic part of me. I started off by writing in my first language, then I switched to English. My passion for English runs deep. I would ask people around what their name was and how old they were, where have they been in English, and replied to them in English. No one could teach me how to speak, more than watch American movies and listen to American music. I remember that language in my ears sounded so well. As if it was known to me while I didn’t know it. In middle school I knew English better than everybody else, which made me proud of myself, but at the same time frustrated, because I wanted to learn much more. Movies and music made my delights, I had friends asking me to write down lyrics so they could sing songs along, asking me to help them out in English. I never had anyone to help me out, I had to learn it on my own, which to me has been one of my greatest accomplishments in life. I know that to achieve excellence in English is a long road, but that doesn’t worry me. My passion for it is too real to ever give it up, and it keeps me motivated to do better every day. I acknowledge my limitations for it not being my first language, however I know there’s always room for improvement. After studying Meteorology and working in the United States of America (my favorite country in the world) – my biggest accomplishment in life so far – I returned to the country where I am from. I felt desolated and misplaced. Words started coming to me, I sat down and wrote The Universe Within. Nothing else was of solace to me. I’ve put my heart and soul in it. The day I was accepted to publish it with Europe Books was a dream coming true. I will forever be thankful to Europe Books UK for giving me this chance. I will not disappoint them. Or you. Thank you for purchasing it. I appreciate it. I sincerely hope you enjoy reading it and that somehow it tells you the words you need to read at that time you need them most. Blessings to you, my reader. Thank you.

Book excerpt: Set in Glasgow 2015. A man suddenly finds himself alone, but not for too long. Soon his attention is consumed by another woman - sublime, inspired, unknowable - and different, he feels, from those who came before her. His friend, arrogant and unencumbered, taunts him as they drift aimlessly from one hangover to the next amidst a landscape of uniform grey, pulsating lights and insipid rain. Between querulous despondency and abject nihilism - an attempt to capture the disquiet of the decade just past, striking at the heart of a contagious male despair.

Book excerpt: “Tracks Along the Left Coast more than accomplishes its self–appointed task of celebrating de Angulo’s legacy.” —Rain Taxi “Schelling’s biography of Jaime de Angulo—'cattle puncher, medical doctor, bohemian, buckeroo,' among other things—presents a fascinating, full–bodied portrait of a man and an era, as well as delving deep into California’s Native history. De Angulo’s isn't a household name, but in Schelling's work the man called by Ezra Pound the 'American Ovid' comes blazing to life in all his singular brilliance.” —Stephen Sparks, Literary Hub California, with its scores of native languages, contains a wealth of old–time stories—a bedrock of the literature of North America. Jaime de Angulo's linguistic and ethnographic work, his writings, as well as the legends that cloak the Old Coyote himself, vividly reflect the particulars of the Pacific Coast. In each retelling, through each storyteller, stories are continually revivified, and that is precisely what Andrew Schelling has done in Tracks Along the Left Coast, weaving together the story of de Angulo's life with the story of the land and the people, languages, and cultures with whom it is so closely tied.
