By the 1960s, all of this had changed. Passenger service had fallen off to the point that most railroads had ended this once vital travel method. Trucks now hauled the goods that once filled the boxcars of the railroad. Many old rail lines closed. The rails and stations were abandoned to the state governments. Most were just left in place to rust and rot away. This book resurrects those abandoned rails and railroad companies. Photos of the stations, once the center of their town's growth, are preserved in these pages. Memories of the companies that crisscrossed Delmarva are brought back to life.

Some of the most profitable divisions of the railroad industry were based on the Delmarva Peninsula.

Book excerpt: Here, in a pictorial history, Jim Shaughnessy turns an eloquent photographer's eye to the Delaware & Hudson, the line that began in 1823 as a canal system to transport Pennsylvania coal to New York State. The D&H extended from Montreal to the coal fields of northeastern Pennsylvania. It was active for 170 years, when the route was sold in 1993 to the Canadian Pacific Railway Corporation. The line made early railroad fame by importing from England the famous Stourbridge Lion, the first steam locomotive in America. This occurred during a great expansion into gravity, an interesting phase which took advantage of the mountainous terrain. The nineteenth century saw a period of economic growth and amalgamation, which was shaped by extremely able and ambitiou company presidents. Eventually the D&H advertised itself as "the Bridge Line to New England and Canada." Mountainous terrain around the coal mines challenged the line with heavy grades, so it was natural for one of its presidents, L. F. Loree, to be fascinated with experimental traction power. The many Loree locomotives, leaders in progressive design, are pictured and described herein. Because a good railroad history is always an economic history of a region, this book will surely please historian, too. Delaware & Hudson is a definitive work, encompassing the mining of the region and detailing the steamboat operations on Lakes George and Champlain. Purchased new by the New York Central in 1951, traded in to GE and left for dead in 1966, resurrected by the Monongahela Railway in 1967, sent once again to a scrapper in 1972, yet again saved from a scrapper in 1974, elevated to celebrity status by the Delaware & Hudson as the "Cinderella's in Silver & Blue" only to fall from grace in 1978, be sold off, used and abused finally to once again return to obscurity by the early 1980's. The remarkable longevity of these two old girls is the stuff of legend. Although much has been written about them over the years, (often by me), the complete story never seems to be all in one place. I had an enduring personal connection with the sharks from the very beginning of their resurrection by the D&H and actually witnessed much of their story.
