But more than that, they were truly what drove the Industrial Revolution, and along with that, the growth of the country. Railroads made communities from nothing, grew sleepy crossroad towns into major hubs of commerce, and opened areas of Delmarva to goods they once could only read about in magazines and newspapers. By the 1960s, all of this had changed. Passenger service had fallen off to the point that most railroads had ended this once vital travel method. Trucks now hauled the goods that once filled the boxcars of the railroad. Many old rail lines closed. The rails and stations were abandoned to the state governments. Most were just left in place to rust and rot away. This book resurrects those abandoned rails and railroad companies. Photos of the stations, once the center of their town's growth, are preserved in these pages. Memories of the companies that crisscrossed Delmarva are brought back to life.

Book excerpt: Starting with one of the oldest railroad lines in the United States, the Delmarva Peninsula holds a unique place in the history of railroading in the country. Prior to the advent of the "iron horse," the area had seen little growth in population and was struggling to get goods to market, as well as supplies brought into the area. The three states that make up the area--all of Delaware and the eastern shores of Maryland and Virginia--were known to have some of the best fields and orchards, a bountiful seafood harvest, and some of the richest woodlands in America. The area flourished with the introduction of the railroad. While passenger service was certainly a part of the railroad's plans, make no mistake, it was these riches that made the area swell with people while small towns became flush with income. Some of the most profitable divisions of the railroad industry were based on the Delmarva Peninsula.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, in a pictorial history, Jim Shaughnessy turns an eloquent photographer's eye to the Delaware & Hudson, the line that began in 1823 as a canal system to transport Pennsylvania coal to New York State. The D&H extended from Montreal to the coal fields of northeastern Pennsylvania. It was active for 170 years, when the route was sold in 1993 to the Canadian Pacific Railway Corporation. The line made early railroad fame by importing from England the famous Stourbridge Lion, the first steam locomotive in America. This occurred during a great expansion into gravity, an interesting phase which took advantage of the mountainous terrain. The nineteenth century saw a period of economic growth and amalgamation, which was shaped by extremely able and ambitiou company presidents. Eventually the D&H advertised itself as "the Bridge Line to New England and Canada." Mountainous terrain around the coal mines challenged the line with heavy grades, so it was natural for one of its presidents, L. F. Loree, to be fascinated with experimental traction power. The many Loree locomotives, leaders in progressive design, are pictured and described herein. Because a good railroad history is always an economic history of a region, this book will surely please historian, too. Delaware & Hudson is a definitive work, encompassing the mining of the region and detailing the steamboat operations on Lakes George and Champlain. Syracuse University Press is pleased to reissue this exemplary study of a railroad. Delaware & Hudson has—and will—continue to raise the standards for all future railroad books.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From 1901 to 1937, the lone engine of the Delaware Valley Railway chugged up and down its solitary track, from the Stroudsburgs to Bushkill. It was a time of heady prospects as the resorts of the Delaware Water Gap pushed north up the valley. Modest farmhouses became vacation boardinghouses, and some then blossomed into grand hotels. The railway brought in vacationers by the carload, but it was not just about tourism. The dinkey hauled in coal for winter heat and hauled out lumber, dairy, and farm produce that kept the farmers in cash. Farm children commuted to town to earn their high school degrees. For more than a generation, the dinkey's whistle blowing over the valley linked its people and places"--Page [4] of cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Delaware and Hudson Railway has a grand and glorious history that began in the coal mines of Pennsylvania. The Delaware and Hudson Canal; Gravity Railroad; the Stourbridge Lion, the first locomotive in America in 1829; and the Albany and Susquehanna Railroad provided the necessary stepping stones for successfully transporting anthracite by rail to New York State. In 1906, the massive roundhouse was built in Oneonta during the glory days of steam power, and in 1931 the company became known as the Delaware and Hudson Railway. Today the railroad serves as a “bridge line,” providing an important link in moving heavy freight. Delaware and Hudson Railway enlightens rail fans with historic photographs and rekindles the nostalgia for the great railroad era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Delaware and Hudson Railway's brief love affair with a pair of old Baldwin "Sharknose" Diesels reads like a Fairy Tale. Purchased new by the New York Central in 1951, traded in to GE and left for dead in 1966, resurrected by the Monongahela Railway in 1967, sent once again to a scrapper in 1972, yet again saved from a scrapper in 1974, elevated to celebrity status by the Delaware & Hudson as the "Cinderella's in Silver & Blue" only to fall from grace in 1978, be sold off, used and abused finally to once again return to obscurity by the early 1980's. The remarkable longevity of these two old girls is the stuff of legend. Although much has been written about them over the years, (often by me), the complete story never seems to be all in one place. I had an enduring personal connection with the sharks from the very beginning of their resurrection by the D&H and actually witnessed much of their story. For that reason I have decided to write the complete story as I know it. Jay Winn 2017
