Book excerpt: In the book Radon, some segments of modern research from a wide range of issues related to radioactive gas radon are presented. The purpose of this book is to emphasize the importance of the existence of the radioactive gas radon in the environment and to make this natural phenomenon a top issue because radon is included in class A human carcinogenesis. The chapters of the book show physical and chemical properties of radon and radon progeny; concentration, emanation, and transport of radon in ambient environments; detection of radon and radon progeny in different environments; passive and active radon measurement techniques; and calibration of a dosimeter for the detection of radon. This book will be of great importance to scientists from a wide range of research area on the phenomenon of radon and will be useful to those who are beginners in this area as well. Due to the impact of radon gas on health, the content of this book will be interesting to a wider audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook focuses on residential radon exposure from a public health point of view and provides detailed recommendations on reducing health risks from radon and sound policy options for preventing and mitigating radon exposure. The material in the handbook reflects the epidemiological evidence that indoor radon exposure is responsible for a substantial number of lung cancers in the general population. Information is provided on the selection of devices to measure radon levels and on procedures for the reliable measurement of these levels. Discussed also are control options for radon in new dwellings, radon reduction in existing dwellings as well as assessment of the costs and benefits of different radon prevention and remedial actions. Also covered are radon risk communication strategies and organization of national radon programs.--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Exposure to radon gas, which is present in the environment naturally, constitutes over half the radiation dose received by the general public annually. At present, the most widely used method of measuring radon concentration levels throughout the world, both in dwellings and in the field, is by etched track detectors — also known as Solid State Nuclear Detectors (SSNTDs). Although this is not only the most widely used method but is also the simplest and the cheapest, yet there is at present no book available on the market globally, devoted exclusively or largely to the methodology of, and dealing with the results obtained by, the SSNTD technique. The present book fills this important gap in the coverage of radon measurements. Individual chapters of the book are contributed by some of the most prominent and active research workers in the world in the SSNTD discipline as well as in the field of radon measurements. A detailed breakdown of the contents of the book is shown below together with the name(s) of the author(s) of each chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Natural Radiation Environment Symposium (NRE VII), the Seventh in the NRE series, which commenced forty years ago in 1963 at Rice University Texas, was held in Rhodes (Greece) in May 2002. During the intervening four decades the research work presented at these NRE Symposia has contributed to a deeper understanding of natural radiation and in particular of its contribution to human radiation exposures. It is clear from the quality and diversity of the 143 papers in this volume of Radioactivity in the Environment series that the study of the natural radiation environment is an active and continually expanding field of research. The papers in this volume fall into a number of main and topical research areas namely: - the measurement and behaviour of natural radionuclides in the environment - cosmic radiation measurement and dosimetry - the external penetrating radiation field at ground level - TENR (Technologically Enhanced Natural Radiation) and NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials) studies - assessment of the health effects of radon - regulatory aspects of natural radiation exposuresIn these papers the results of many new surveys of natural radionuclide levels in the environment and of improved methods of detection are described. While some of the natural radiation sources investigated are unmodified by human activity, many accounts are given here of exposures to natural sources which have been enhanced by technology. Such TENR and NORM exposures are shown to range from activities such as mining, oil and gas exploitation, the use of industrial by-products as building materials, to space travel to name but a few. In several cases quite high doses to some individuals are shown to occur. Accounts are given here of methods to prevent and reduce exposures to such sources.

Book excerpt: This book presents state-of-the-art techniques on radon (222Rn) in the environment, including measurement techniques in air, soil and water and its potential applications to various hydrological investigations, especially for water resources development and management. The future directions of its use are also discussed. As a radon tracer can be used to solve hydrological issues, the highlights of this book are useful for stakeholders to achieve UN Sustainable Development Goal 6, which addresses the sustainability of water resources. The most relevant target audiences are hydrologists, hydrogeologists, geologists, environmental scientists, nuclear physicists, hydraulic engineers and academicians, among others. This book also covers health implications of radon and mitigation strategies, thus creating a valuable resource for health physicists working on environmental radiation safety as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate assessment of radon concentration in indoor air can determine whether the environment poses a lung cancer risk. A radon calibration system is being developed and studied that dispenses custom and reproducible activities of radon from a radon generator source into a vessel for sensor testing and calibration. There are two methods by which radon can be dispensed into the vessel. The flow-through method allows for radon to be pumped at a constant activity and flow rate through the chamber, with concentrations ranging from 1.7 pCi/l to 34 pCi/l. The vacuum method injects a predefined concentration of radon into the chamber, starting from 85 pCi/l. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages. To accurately detect alpha particles emitted by radon and its progeny, a portable alpha particle detector using a silicon PIN photodiode is being developed. The current lab system setup using a $10 Hamamatsu photodiode yields a 1.82% channel resolution using polonium-210 as an alpha source. A detector with sufficient energy resolution is needed to resolve individual alpha peaks in an energy spectrum produced by various radionuclides present in air. Background radiation experiments have shown that the detector exhibits an excellent signal-to-noise ratio. Lab counting experiments have shown the experimental activity is in reasonable agreement with the calculated radiation incident on the photodiode. Current circuit development includes a charge sensitive preamplifier, and the remaining goal is to add a pulse counting chain to complete the circuit and the portable alpha particle counter. In the future, it is planned to extensively calibrate the alpha particle detector with the radon calibration system.
