Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book guides readers into the realm of particle accelerators, which have served as indispensable tools for fundamental research, energy development, medical therapy, industrial applications, national security, etc., since 1924. Towards a new generation of high power proton and ion accelerators, challenges often come from space charge effects, which are most pronounced in low-velocity beams. This book focuses on Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerators, one of the most popular front-end structures for accelerator facilities, and their beam physics. Uncovering the limitations of the classic design methods, novel approaches to achieve efficient RFQ accelerators with high beam quality will be presented. In addition, new ideas for possible future developments, such as how to realize long RFQs with high performance and how RFQs can be applied for much higher beam-velocities to shorten large-scale accelerators, will be introduced. To provide a general overview of the research and development of RFQs accelerating particle species from protons to uranium ions, this book uses over 10 real examples developed or proposed in the twenty-first century for various facilities of different dimensions (from large scale e.g. a collider to small scale e.g. university experimental setups). With its rich content and comprehensive scope, this book is an invaluable reference for researchers and graduate students interested in RFQ accelerators and the intricacies of space charge physics in low-velocity beams.

Download or read book Development of 400- to 450-MHz RFQ Resonator-cavity Mechanical Designs written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the development of the radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) linac, the resonator cavity's mechanical design may be a challenge similar in magnitude to that of the development of the accelerator structure itself. Experience with the all-copper 425-MHz RFQ proof-of-principle linac has demonstrated that the resonator cavity must be structurally stiff and easily tunable. This experience has led to development of copper-plated steel structures having vanes that may be moved within a cylinder for tuning. Design of a flexible vane-to-cylinder radio-frequency (rf) joint, the vane, and the cylinder has many constraints dictated by the small-diameter cavities in the 400-MHz-frequency region. Two types of flexible, mechanical vane-to-cylinder rf joints are being developed at Los Alamos: the C-seal and the rf clamp-joint.

Download or read book Mechanical Features of the ATS RFQ Linear Accelerator written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) linear accelerator has been constructed and placed in operation on the Los Alamos National Laboratory accelerator test stand (ATS). This accelerator uses an evacuated rf manifold to distribute rf excitation from the 425-MHz rf power supply to the slot-coupled, RFQ vane-cavity, resonator assembly. The RFQ vanes are supported on commercially available copper-plated, linear, resilient C-seals to provide a high-conductivity rf contact that permits aligning and positioning the vanes during tuning, and demounting the vanes for evaluation and modification as necessary. All rf structures are fabricated from stress-relieved, bright-acid copper-plated carbon steel. Measurements made on the accelerator as assembled have demonstrated>8000 vane-cavity Q at the quadrupole's approx. 423.400-MHz accelerating-mode frequency. Operating manifold vacuum of 3 to 6 x 10−8 torr has been observed after rf conditioning; conditioning required 150 h for stable high-power rf operation. Experience to date has indicated the desirability of modifying the vane rf-contact seat configuration to improve assembly and alignment procedures, improving vane-machining processes to increase vane straightness, installing periodic vane-shorting rings to minimize the effect of dipole modes in the quadrupole accelerating structure, and modifying the waveguide-coupling slot in the manifold to improve forward rf power flow.
Book Synopsis Development of RF Accelerating Structures in the Front-end System of Light Ion Particle Accelerators by : Ki Ryung Shin

This book was released on 2014 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is an RF linear accelerator-based neutron source which utilizes various RF cavity resonators to interact with a traveling particle beam to transfer energy to the beam. The RF cavity resonator generates a strong electromagnetic modal field specifically shaped at an operating frequency to provide good energy efficiency. Having a reliable cavity RF field is therefore, important to sustain performance and stable operation of the accelerator system. Although the SNS system is already built and in use, some parts still need to be improved to achieve better performance and higher operational reliability. Our study can provide potential improvements in existing accelerators as well as future ones. For example, the performance and reliability of the radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) and the rebuncher cavities in the low beam energy front-end section of the SNS accelerators, have been improved by applying our newly proposed design ideas. In this dissertation, we propose four development directions for RFQ and rebuncher cavity to enhance its performance and field stabilization. These include: 1) a practical design method to determine RFQ fabrication tolerance based on extensive 3D simulations to help reduce RFQ fabrication errors. 2) alternative RFQ designs to improve RFQ mode separation with lower fabrication, tuning costs and structural reliability. 3) a multi-section RFQ with new RF coupling scheme which is validated with scaled prototyping. This design eliminates spurious electromagnetic modes and can decrease manufacturing and tuning costs of long coupled RFQs. 4) a double gap rebuncher cavity design instead of a single cavity for decreased gap voltage and peak electric field. This design modification can reduce X-ray radiation intensity which can address safety problems in the current accelerator front-end area. A summary of our proposed solutions and contributions are presented in this dissertation paper.

Book Synopsis Multipactor in Accelerating Cavities by : Valery D. Shemelin
Download or read book Multipactor in Accelerating Cavities written by Valery D. Shemelin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-10 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written by two world-recognized experts in radio frequency (RF) systems for particle accelerators and is based on many years of experience in dealing with the multipactor phenomenon. The authors introduce and review multipactor in RF cavities for scientists and engineers working in the field of accelerator physics and technology. The multipactor phenomenon of unintended electron avalanches occurs in the RF cavities commonly and quite often is a performance-limiting factor. The book starts with an Introductory Overview which contains historical observations and brief description of most common aspects of the phenomenon. Part I deals with the multipactor in a flat gap. It starts with description of the dynamics of electrons, derivation of the stability condition and analyzing influence of several factors on the multipactor. Then, the initial considerations are extended to derive a generalized phase stability and finally a particular case, called ping-pong multipacting, is considered. The part one is concluded with a brief review of computer codes used in multipactor simulations. Part II is dedicated to the multipactor in crossed RF fields, the typical situation in accelerating cavities. Two cases of MP are considered: a two-point multipactor near the cavity equator in elliptical cavities and a one-point multipactor. Part III describes optimization of the cavity shapes geared toward designing multipactor-free structures. The book will serve as an importance reference on multipactor for those involved in developing and operating radio frequency cavities for particle accelerators.
