These included atmospheric constitution, deposition of radioactivity in the respiratory tract and physiological translocation. Several aspects of the uranium mine atmosphere were considered, such as radon and radon daughter activity concentrations, physical form and activity-size distribution of the radon daughters, relative humidity and air temperature. Activity concentrations were found to be extremely variable, however, the remaining atmospheric factors were reasonably stable. Less than ten percent of the radon daughters were unattached. The attached fraction could apparently be represented by a mean diffusion coefficient of 1.3 x 10−5 cm2/sec or an aerodynamic size of 0.067 microns. This diffusion coefficient was not significantly affected by the presence of atmospheric particles produced during normal mining operations. Total and regional deposition percentages were determined experimentally as well as theoretically. Percent total deposition values for individual radon daughters were 50, 45 and 41 for radium-A, radium-B and radium-C, respectively, for an average respiration rate of 18 min−1 and an average tidal volume of 1.2 liters. The influence of respiration rate and tidal volume upon total deposition was examined. Regional deposition fractions for the nasal cavity, tracheobronchial and pulmonary regions were 22, 15 and 63 percent of the total deposited activity, respectively, for nose-breathing. Physiological translocation of respiratory deposited activity was investigated for various regions of the respiratory system. Results indicated that ciliary translocation was of negligible importance in the dosimetry of inhaled radon daughters.

Book excerpt: This Safety Report has been developed as part of the IAEA programme on occupational radiation protection to provide for the application of its safety standards in implementing a graded approach to the protection of workers against exposures associated with uranium mining and processing. The publication describes the methods of production associated with the uranium industry and provides practical information on the radiological risks to workers in the exploration, mining and processing of uranium. It is a compilation of detailed information on uranium mining and processing stages and techniques, general radiation protection considerations in the relevant industry, general methodologies applicable for control, monitoring and dose assessment, exposure pathways, and radiation protection programmes for a range of commonly used mining and processing techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new, comprehensively updated edition of the acclaimed textbook by F.H. Attix (Introduction to Radiological Physics and Radiation Dosimetry) taking into account the substantial developments in dosimetry since its first edition. This monograph covers charged and uncharged particle interactions at a level consistent with the advanced use of the Monte Carlo method in dosimetry; radiation quantities, macroscopic behaviour and the characterization of radiation fields and beams are covered in detail. A number of chapters include addenda presenting derivations and discussions that offer new insight into established dosimetric principles and concepts. The theoretical aspects of dosimetry are given in the comprehensive chapter on cavity theory, followed by the description of primary measurement standards, ionization chambers, chemical dosimeters and solid state detectors. Chapters on applications include reference dosimetry for standard and small fields in radiotherapy, diagnostic radiology and interventional procedures, dosimetry of unsealed and sealed radionuclide sources, and neutron beam dosimetry. The topics are presented in a logical, easy-to-follow sequence and the text is supplemented by numerous illustrative diagrams, tables and appendices. For senior undergraduate- or graduate-level students and professionals.

This book was released on 2009-11-07 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current radiation protection standards are based upon the application of the linear no-threshold (LNT) assumption, which considers that even very low doses of ionizing radiation can cause cancer. The radiation hormesis hypothesis, by contrast, proposes that low-dose ionizing radiation is beneficial. In this book, the author examines all facets of radiation hormesis in detail, including the history of the concept and mechanisms, and presents comprehensive, up-to-date reviews for major cancer types. It is explained how low-dose radiation can in fact decrease all-cause and all-cancer mortality and help to control metastatic cancer. Attention is also drawn to biases in epidemiological research when using the LNT assumption. The author shows how proponents of the LNT assumption consistently reject, manipulate, and deliberately ignore an overwhelming abundance of published data and falsely claim that no reliable data are available at doses of less than 100 mSv.
