Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quite a Gentleman We are glad to hear all that you say of your new master, and that, besides being a good teacher, he is a jolly fellow, and "quite a gentleman." But I wonder what you mean by this last remark? The jolly fellow, I think I understand. No doubt he is bright and cheerful over the lessons, makes the best of things, helps you out of difficulties, joins in the games, is not over-hard upon trifling faults, in short, is sympathetic and just, two most admirable qualities in anybody. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Gentleman IN offering this little book to that public for which it is intended - a public made up of young men from fifteen to twenty years of age - the author fears that he may seem presumptuous. He intends to accentuate what most of them already know, not to teach them any new thing. And if he appear to touch too much upon the tri es of life, it is because experience shows that it is the small things of our daily intercourse with our fellow-beings which make the difference between success and failure. He gratefully acknowledges his obligation to the Reverend editor of the/1w Maria for permis sion to use in the last part of this volume several of the Chats with Good Listeners. I am not going to contradict them here, nor do I Wish to write the life of a man whom I have served, on and ce, for more years than I care to remember. If ever that's to be done, it must be the business of one who got his learning at school. All that I can speak about is that which I saw with my own eyes and heard with my own ears during the days when I was servant to him. And if my word can do any thing to set him right before the world, in SO far as he can be set right, I give that word willingly, as is his due. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Amateur Gentleman John Barty, ex-champion of England and landlord of the "Coursing Hound," sat screwed round in his chair with his eyes yet turned to the door that had closed after the departing lawyer fully five minutes ago, and his eyes were wide and blank, and his mouth (grim and close-lipped as a rule) gaped, becoming aware of which, he closed it with a snap, and passed a great knotted fist across his brow. "Barnabas," said he slowly, "I beant asleep an' dreaming be I, Barnabas?" "No, father!" "But - seven - 'undred - thousand - pound. It were seven - 'undred thousand pound, were n't it, Barnabas?" "Yes, father!" "Seven - 'undred - thou - ! No! I can't believe it, Barnabas my bye." "Neither can I, father," said Barnabas, still staring down at the papers which littered the table before him. "Nor I are n't a-going to try to believe it, Barnabas." "And yet - here it is, all written down in black and white, and you heard what Mr. Crabtree said?" "Ah, - I heered, but arter all Crabtree's only a lawyer - though a good un as lawyers go, always been honest an' square wi' me - leastways I've never caught him trying to bamboozle John Barty yet - an' what the eye don't ob-serve the heart don't grieve, Barnabas my bye, an there y' are. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Character of the Gentleman The students of Miami University, in the State of Ohio, did me the honor of inviting me, during the past summer, to deliver an address on the even ing before their Commencement Day. I had never visited that teeming region of the spreading West, and gladly accepted the invitation. The address was printed, according to custom, and I was fur nished with a liberal supply of copies, not sufficient, however, to satisfy all persons who seemed desirous of perusing it. Repeated prepositions to republish it were made; but they would not have induced me to venture upon a second edition of so fugitive a composition, had not some trustees and many stu dents of our own institution desired me to do it. On the part of the auctioneer there is no theft: on the part of the scornful passer there may be usurpa tion. The auctioneer necessarily, unconscious ly, speaks under sway of the advanced senti ment, which recognizes that within every Christian heart live the germs of that high Ideal, the manifestation of which in moving, incorporate reality receives the choice name of gentleman. The universal giving and ao cepting of this name is a homage to the beau ty of what the name represents, - an aspira tion, however remote and modest, for the pos session of the refined substance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treasure Trove: Or He Would Be a Gentleman The novel is one clearly written in a hurry, and in a haphazard manner without deep conviction. The result is a jumble of names, illustrious and otherwise, of half-finished, ineffective portraits. There are too many regrettable blemishes in the book, and strict justice requires that they should be adverted to. It is unnecessarily coarse and vulgar in parts the vulgarity being the more noticeable than in certain chapters of Handy Andy and Rory o'more from the fact that there is a general lack of racy humour to carry it off. No thing could be more vulgar than the eighth chapter, and the scene is, in addition, absurd and ill-written. It is a pity that Lover allowed so bad an example of his hasty work to pass without revision. Lover's sentimental heroes, as has been pointed out in previous introductions, are not particularly interesting. The central figures of his two earlier stories are richly comic, but in this book the story revolves around Ned Corkery, who, though not quite absurd, is decidedly stagey. All the author's asides notwithstanding, many of his actions are weak and he rants not a little. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gentleman's Magazine, Vol. 296: January to June, 1904 Bwas a tall, fair, good-featured fellow with a very pleasant expression; but the furrow of care was now stamped on his face, marking him apart from other men of his age, though it did not make him look exactly older, for most people took him for younger than he was. He was just thirty when Ella died. His children were sweet and intelligent as children could be. Altogether there was no family more likely to gain friends and excite sympathy, but the air of quiet reserve which had come over Douglas with his sorrow seemed to have been inherited in some degree by his children even when they were quite little. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of bestselling author Georgette Heyer's most suspenseful Regency romances, The Quiet Gentleman combines an ingenious mystery plot with her signature witty style and effervescently engaging characters. Less than a hero's welcome... Returning to his family seat from Waterloo, Gervase Frant, seventh Earl of St Erth, could have expected more enthusiasm for his homecoming. His quiet cousin, stepmother, and young half-brother seem openly disappointed that he survived the wars. And when he begins to fall for his half-brother's sweetheart, his chilly reception goes from unfriendly to positively murderous. Praise for Georgette Heyer and The Quiet Gentleman: "Fascinating reading...authentic atmosphere in a delightful English tale"—Chicago Sunday Tribune "Georgette Heyer was one of the great protagonists of the historical novel in the post-war golden age of the form. Her regency romances are delightful light reading, and her historical novels such as The Spanish Bride and An Infamous Army demonstrate how fiction and history can work together to make a valuable literary form."—Philippa Gregory, bestselling author
