Action research helps nurses to investigate their practices as reflective practitioners, allowing them to ask ‘What is going on? How do we understand the existing situation? How do we improve it?’ This book supports nurses in investigating their own professional practices in order to develop the new insights and approaches: · embodying holistic perspectives in dialogical and relational forms of individual and organisational learning, · equal emphasis on processes and outcomes; · welcoming all participants’ contributions , and listening to all voices; · developing a patient-centred focus where people are involved in their own healing; · building communities of enquiring practices. This book is intended for undergraduate student nurses, qualified practising nurses in clinical settings who may or may not be engaged in formal professional education courses and nurse educators and managers.

Book excerpt: Advances in cancer research over the recent decades have been plentiful and often successful, with 5 year survival rates increasing almost uniformly across the board. The advent of new technologies has presented solutions for yesterday’s barriers to research, allowing us to leap forward in our ability to prevent, diagnose, and treat various cancers. Developments in omics studies has provided new insights into the underlying molecular basis of different cancers and their subtypes, greatly enhancing our understanding of the vast heterogeneity that exists. Progress in our ability to diagnose and detect early-stage cancers has resulted in numerous screening and prevention programs. Novel imaging technologies allow us to study and comprehend cancers with greater clarity than ever before. Although the field, as a whole, has experienced many successes, arduous challenges must be overcome in order to see continued success. The truth of the matter is cancer related deaths continue to rise in number worldwide, especially in lower- and middle-income countries. It is evident that there is still a lot of work to be done. This Frontiers in Oncology Special Issue marks the 1st edition of a collection of selected articles published in the journal over the course of the previous calendar year, highlighting ongoing research and advances being carried out in the different disciplines of cancer research.

Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policy makers are caught between two powerful forces in relation to testing in America's schools. One is increased interest on the part of educators, reinforced by federal requirements, in developing tests that accurately reflect local educational standards and goals. The other is a strong push to gather information about the performance of students and schools relative to national and international standards and norms. The difficulty of achieving these two goals simultaneously is exacerbated by both the long-standing American tradition of local control of education and the growing public sentiment that students already take enough tests. Finding a solution to this dilemma has been the focus of numerous debates surrounding the Voluntary National Tests proposed by President Clinton in his 1997 State of the Union address. It was also the topic of a congressionally mandated 1998 National Research Council report (Uncommon Measures: Equivalence and Linkage Among Educational Tests), and was touched upon in a U.S. General Accounting Office report (Student Testing: Issues Related to Voluntary National Mathematics and Reading Tests). More recently, Congress asked the National Research Council to determine the technical feasibility, validity, and reliability of embedding test items from the National Assessment of Educational Progress or other tests in state and district assessments in 4th-grade reading and 8th-grade mathematics for the purpose of developing a valid measure of student achievement within states and districts and in terms of national performance standards or scales. This report is the response to that congressional mandate.
