Book Synopsis The Why of the Barkley: (and Pretty Much Everything Else) by : Rich Barkley Scritch Limacher
Download or read book The Why of the Barkley: (and Pretty Much Everything Else) written by Rich Barkley Scritch Limacher and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-03-16 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What begins as an exploration into why a certain popular long and brutal Tennessee footrace exists soon expands (rather humorously) into a much broader philosophical examination of why anything at all exists. Two runners in the race don't actually get very far, but spend most of their time discussing it and arguing their thoughts about almost everything. They don't like each other very much either, but they've haplessly stuck together (for survival) and do respect one another's ideas (while trying forever to argue them down). This is adventure not in the physical but in the mental sense. It will challenge just about everything you hold sacred and believe in, and it should make you think. This is not for the passive masses, the followers-blindly, or those intellectually squeamish peeps that happen to find themselves already entered--without asking why--in the (human) race, "the race that eats its young."

Download or read book Mexican Today written by Pati Jinich and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intriguing recipes for everyday meals from the host of the PBS series Pati’s Mexican Table On her PBS TV series, now in its fifth season, as well as in frequent appearances on shows like The Chew, Pati Jinich, a busy mother of three, has shown a flair for making Mexican cooking irresistibly accessible. In Mexican Today, she shares easy, generous dishes, both traditional ones and her own new spins. Some are regional recipes she has recovered from the past and updated, like Miners’ Enchiladas with fresh vegetables and cheese or Drunken Rice with Chicken and Chorizo, a specialty of the Yucatán. “Sweaty” Tacos with ripe tomatoes and cheese are so convenient they’re sold on Mexican streets by bicyclists. Her grandmother’s Cornflake Cookies feel just as contemporary now as they did then. Pati has “Mexed up” other recipes in such family favorites as Mexican Pizza with Grilled Skirt Steak and Onions. Still other dishes show the evolution of Mexican food north and south of the border, including Mexican Dreamboat Hotdogs and Cal-Mex Fish Tacos with Creamy Slaw. This food will draw everyone together—a family at the end of a working day, a book club, or a neighborhood potluck. Throughout, Pati is an infectious cheerleader, sharing stores of the food, people, and places behind the recipes.
Book Synopsis Relativized Minimality by : Luigi Rizzi
Download or read book Relativized Minimality written by Luigi Rizzi and published by Mit Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents an important extension of government-binding theory in syntax. This monograph presents an important extension of government-binding theory in syntax. It offers a new characterization of locality in the theory of government through a relativization of the Minimality Principle, and it explores the consequences of this approach for the Empty Category Principle and the analysis of a variety of empirical domains, including intervention effects, That-trace phenomena, and argument/adjunct asymmetries. The final part of the book is devoted to a new interpretation of the argument/adjunct asymmetries that arise in various extraction processes. Referential indices, a fundamental ingredient of the binding relation, are restricted to occur on referential arguments, as in Chomsky's original proposal. This natural restriction has the surprising effect of capturing the major argument-adjunct asymmetries in a straightforward manner while permitting a radical simplification of the Empty Category Principle.
Book Synopsis Entrepreneurial Selves by : Carla Freeman
Download or read book Entrepreneurial Selves written by Carla Freeman and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-15 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entrepreneurial Selves is an ethnography of neoliberalism. Bridging political economy and affect studies, Carla Freeman turns a spotlight on the entrepreneur, a figure saluted across the globe as the very embodiment of neoliberalism. Steeped in more than a decade of ethnography on the emergent entrepreneurial middle class of Barbados, she finds dramatic reworkings of selfhood, intimacy, labor, and life amid the rumbling effects of political-economic restructuring. She shows us that the déjà vu of neoliberalism, the global hailing of entrepreneurial flexibility and its concomitant project of self-making, can only be grasped through the thickness of cultural specificity where its costs and pleasures are unevenly felt. Freeman theorizes postcolonial neoliberalism by reimagining the Caribbean cultural model of 'reputation-respectability.' This remarkable book will allow readers to see how the material social practices formerly associated with resistance to capitalism (reputation) are being mobilized in ways that sustain neoliberal precepts and, in so doing, re-map class, race, and gender through a new emotional economy.
