Book excerpt: This report consolidates and synthesizes information on Quaternary faulting, folding, and volcanism in Utah and characterizes recent tectonic activity throughout the state. The primary purpose is to provide a comprehensive reference on fault-specific seismic sources and surface rupture to facilitate the evaluation of earthquake hazards in Utah. Two 1:500,000-scale maps show Quaternary tectonic features categorized according to probable ages of most recent surface deformation and ages of volcanic rocks. Two appendix tables summarize significant data on the activity of mapped features, including ages of surface displacements and volcanism, slip rates, recurrence intervals, displacement amounts, and lengths of surface ruptures. Good age control and quantitative activity data are available for relatively few tectonic features in Utah and detailed work is needed in many areas of the state. 157 pages + 2 plates

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large, damaging earthquakes can happen in many parts of Utah. Therefore, when choosing where to live in this state, we should be aware of the earthquake risk. It is important to know what potential earthquake hazards exist in an area, and what action we can take to reduce the earthquake risk to ourselves and our families. This brochure introduces homebuyers and others to earthquake hazards so that informed choices can be made when selecting homes, building sites, or hazard-reduction measures.

Book excerpt: Moab Valley and the contiguous Spanish Valley comprise a popular residential and recreational area in east-central Utah. Geologic processes that created the rugged and scenic landscape of Moab-Spanish Valley are still active today and can be hazardous to property and life. To address development in areas with geologic hazards, the Utah Geological Survey (UGS) conducted a geologic-hazards investigation to provide information to Moab City and Grand County to help guide development and reduce losses from geologic hazards. This report includes maps of Moab Valley and the northern and central parts of Spanish Valley that provide information on geologic hazards to assist homeowners, planners, and developers in making informed decisions. The maps show areas where hazards may exist and where site-specific studies are advisable prior to development. The maps are for planning purposes only, and do not preclude the necessity for site investigations. Site-specific studies by qualified professionals (engineering geologists, geotechnical engineers, hydrologists) should evaluate hazards and, if necessary, recommend hazard-reduction measures. Because of the small scale of the maps, some hazard areas are not shown; hazard studies are therefore recommended for all critical facilities (for example, hospitals, schools, fire stations), including those outside the mapped hazard areas.

This report provides information for the Monroe City area, in Utah's central Sevier Valley, to reduce losses from geologic hazards. Surficial-geologic mapping provides the basis on which individual geologic hazards are identified and mapped. Alluvial-fan and basin-fill deposits cover most of the map area. Other deposits consist of colluvium, artificial fill, spring travertine, and volcanic bedrock. The geologic hazards maps show where hazards may exist. The maps should be used to inform citizens and developers of potential risks and for local government officials to make prudent land-use planning decisions. The maps are general, and site-specific studies are needed to demonstrate site suitability prior to development. Typical risk-reduction methods for these geologic hazards generally include avoidance or engineering design to reduce the risk to an acceptable level.

Presentations cover a gamut of types of disasters throughout the world, describing research and applications of studies in the U.S. and other countries. The book begins with a collection of papers giving a basic background and philosophy of approaching an understanding of natural disasters. These are followed by papers on natural hazards in coastal areas, mountainous regions, landslides, flooding and the detrimental effects of permafrost. The book should prove valuable in gaining an insight of natural hazards and their geomorphic relations, which is imperative for prudent environmental planning in coping with disasters.

Hylland and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1998 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Farmington Siding landslide complex is in Davis County, Utah, about 25 kilometers north of Salt Lake City. The landslide complex covers approximately 19.5 square kilometers and is one of 13 late Pleistocene/Holocene features along the Wasatch Front mapped by previous investigators as possible liquefaction-induced lateral spreads. The Farmington Siding landslide complex is in a largely rural area, but state and interstate highways, railroads, petroleum and natural-gas pipelines, and other lifelines cross the complex. Continued population growth along the Wasatch Front increases the likelihood of urban development within and adjacent to the landslide complex. Development along the Wasatch Front has proceeded with little consideration of hazards associated with liquefaction-induced landslides. Slope-failure mechanisms, extent of internal deformation, and timing of landslide events are poorly understood, and these factors must be evaluated to enable local governments to effectively plan for development and implement hazard-reduction strategies as needed. The purpose of this study is to assess the hazard associated with future liquefaction-induced landsliding within and adjacent to the Farmington Siding landslide complex by evaluating slope-failure modes and extent of internal deformation within the complex, inferring the geologic and hydrologic conditions under which landsliding occurred, determining the timing of landsliding, and evaluating the relative likelihood of various earthquake source zones to trigger liquefaction-induced landsliding. We chose the Farmington Siding landslide complex for this study because of the distinctiveness of geomorphic features on the northern part of the complex and the presence of landslide deposits that are clearly of different ages. Furthermore, because much of the area is rural, appropriate land-use planning measures can still be implemented to protect future development.
