Book excerpt: The second course of the International School on Physics with Low Energy Antiprotons was held in Erice, Sicily at the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture, from May 20 to May 31, 1987. The School is dedicated to physics accessible to experiments using low energy antiprotons, especially in view of operation of the LEAR facility at CERN with the upgraded antiproton source AAC (Antiproton Accumulator AA and Antiproton Collector ACOL). The first course in 1986 covered topics related to fundamental symmetries. This book contains the proceedings of the second course which focused on spectroscopy of light and heavy quarks. These proceedings contain both the tutorial lectures and contri butions presented by participants during the School. The papers are organized in four sections: The first section includes theoretical reviews. Section II contains experimental reviews and covers the results in meson spectroscopy from DM2, MARK III, GAMS and n-WA76. Section III presents the new meson spectroscopy experiments in pre paration at CERN and Fermilab: Crystal Barrel, OBELIX, Jetset and E760. Section IV is dedicated to LEAR and to future facilities where meson spectroscopy would be a principal component of the physics programme. We should like to thank Dr. Alberto Gabriele and the staff of the Ettore Majorana Centre who provided for a smooth running of the School and a very pleasant stay. We are particularly grateful to Mrs. Anne Marie Bugge for her crucial help during the preparation and running of the School and for the editing of these Proceedings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In honor of one of the most prolific and exciting scientists of the second half of the last century, a memorial meeting was organized by the Institute of Advanced Studies at Nanyang Technological University for Professor Abdus Salam's 90th Birthday in January 2016. Salam believed that "scientific thought is the common heritage of all mankind" and that the developing world should play its part, not merely by importing technology but by being the arbiter of its own scientific destiny. That belief saw him rise from humble beginnings in a village in Pakistan to become one of the world's most original and influential particle physicists, culminating in the 1979 Nobel Prize (shared with Glashow and Weinberg) for contributions to electroweak unification, which forms an integral part of the Standard Model. The book collected the papers presented at this memorable event which saw many distinguished scientists participating as speakers to reflect on Prof Salam's great passion for the science and achievements.

This book was released on 2019-10-30 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports on the search for a new heavy particle, the Vector-Like Top quark (VLT), in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The signal process is the pair production of VLT decaying into a Higgs boson and top quark (TT→Ht+X, X=Ht, Wb, Zt). The signal events result in top–antitop quarks final states with additional heavy flavour jets. The book summarises the analysis of the data collected with the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016. In order to better differentiate between signals and backgrounds, exclusive taggers of top quark and Higgs boson were developed and optimised for VLT signals. These efforts improved the sensitivity by roughly 30%, compared to the previous analysis. The analysis outcomes yield the strongest constraints on parameter space in various BSM theoretical models. In addition, the book addresses detector operation and the evaluation of tracking performance. These efforts are essential to properly collecting dense events and improving the accuracy of the reconstructed objects that are used for particle identification. As such, they represent a valuable contribution to data analysis in extremely dense environments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely accepted that quarks and leptons should be understood on the basis of the same unification scheme. The investigation of hidden rules behind observed quark and lepton mass spectra will provide a very important clue to a unified model of quarks and leptons. Now the investigation is timely because of the recent abundance of data on the CKM matrix elements and neutrino mixings. This volume offers useful information and hints on a unified understanding of quarks and leptons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: V N Gribov, one of the founders of modern particle physics, shaped our understanding of QCD as the microscopic dynamics of hadrons. This volume collects his papers on quark confinement, showing the road he followed to arrive at the theory and formulating the theory itself. It begins with papers providing a beautiful physical explanation of asymptotic freedom based on the phenomenon of antiscreening and demonstrating the inconsistency of the standard perturbative treatment of the gluon fields (Gribov copies, Gribov horizon). It continues with papers presenting the Gribov theory according to which confinement of colour is determined by the existence of practically massless quarks. The last two papers conclude Gribov's twenty-year-long study of the problem; QCD is formulated as a quantum field theory containing both perturbative and nonperturbative phenomena, and the confinement is based on the supercritical binding of light quarks.

Book excerpt: A quark is a type of elementary particle found in protons and neutrons and other subatomic particles. They are a major constituent of matter, along with leptons. In nature, quarks are never found on their own, as isolated, single particles; rather, they are bound together in composite particles named hadrons. For this reason, much of what is known about quarks has been inferred from observations on the hadrons themselves. This book provides leading edge research on this field from around the globe.

Book excerpt: The book originated in a series of lectures given at Liverpool in 2013 to a group that included postgraduate and undergraduate students and staff of the Physics Department. They followed from two very successful lectures given to the undergraduate Physical Society. It seemed that there was a very large interest among the students in investigating the foundations of physics in a way that was never done in physics courses, and was not available in books or other outlets. However, the idea was to create a framework in which students (and interested staff) could develop their own thinking relative to the ideas in the lectures. So it was important to create both conceptual and mathematical structures on the issues that are important at this level. The book has the right sort of technical content to allow for this development, but doesn't lose itself in excessive details. The ideal use for this book would be on postgraduate courses where students would be encouraged to think about the foundations in a way that is well beyond the superficial. However, a course on aspects of this material would also be valuable at the undergraduate level, where students could be stimulated into believing that creative thinking could solve the problems that emerge when we confront foundational problems.
