Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel Writing in an Age of Global Quarantine is an anthology of travel accounts, by a diverse range of writers and academics. Challenging conventional academic ‘authority’, each contributor writes, from memory during the Covid-19 lockdown, about a place they have previously visited, ‘accompanied’ by an historical traveller who published an account of the same place. As immobility is forced upon us, at least for the immediate future, we have the chance to reflect. Travel Writing in an Age of Global Quarantine presents opportunities to approach a text as a scholar differently. We break with the traditional academic ‘rules’ by inserting ourselves into the narrative and foregrounding the personal, subjective elements of literary scholarship. Each contributor critiques an historical description of a place about which, simultaneously, they write a personal account. The travel writer, Philip Marsden, posits a fundamental difference between traditional ‘academic’ writing and travel writing in that travel narratives do not, or ought not anyway, begin by assuming a scholarly authoritative understanding of the places they describe. Instead, they attempt to say what they found and how they felt about it. The very good point we think Marsden makes, and the one this book tries to demonstrate, is that, as a matter of form, the first-person narrative has the ability to expose the research process: to allow the reader to see when and how a scholarly transformation takes place; to give the scholar the opportunity to openly foreground their own subjectivity and say ‘this is the personal journey that led me to my conclusions’; to problematize the unchallenged authority of the scholar. Travel Writing in an Age of Global Quarantine challenges the idea of scholarly authority by embracing the subjective nature of research and the first-person element. We address a problematic distance between travel writing practice and travel writing scholarship, in which the latter talks about the former without ever really talking to it. Defining travel writing as a genre has often proved more difficult than it might seem, but Peter Hulme has suggested that it is ethically necessary for the writer to have visited the place described. Hulme asserts that ‘travel writing is certainly literature, but it is never fiction’. If this seems obvious, Travel Writing in an Age of Global Quarantine asks the reader to consider the idea that if visiting the place described is necessary for the writer to claim they have produced a travel account, might it also be necessary, or at least advantageous and valuable, for the writer of a scholarly critique of that account to have done the same.

Book excerpt: As COVID-19 shut down the world in the early months of 2020, professor and writer David von Schlichten decided to keep a diary to help him cope with the crisis. As a scholar of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, von Schlichten recalled her journal that she kept while she and her dying husband and daughter were under quarantine in 1803. They had been forced into a lazaretto upon arriving in Italy due to fears among the Italians that the family might carry yellow fever, which was ravaging New York, the Setons’s home city. Elizabeth wrote about the ordeal in detail that is heart-breaking, mystical, poetic, and inspiring. In Quarantine: How Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Helped Me Through the Early Months of the COVID-19 Pandemic, von Schlichten shares his diary written during the first three months of the pandemic. He writes candidly about his struggles and doubts while also offering an insightful analysis of Seton’s quarantine journal and what it has to say to us today. Quarantine is an accessible, intelligent, spiritual, and heartfelt reflection on the power of Seton’s wise words of hope for any crisis.

He was struck while walking with his dog on the highway, completely disoriented due to a benzo he had purchased online. This book is my account of everything that happened in the following two years, from the heart-wrenching news on that fateful night to the moment I had to bury my child and the realization that I would never truly be able to enjoy life again. By means of this book, I hope to, along with Mathias, warn others about the danger of 'research chemicals' that are readily available in online stores. It illustrates the devastating impact of these seemingly harmless pills, often used for relaxation or sleep. I found solace by writing this story. I honour my son by telling his story in its entirety, as raw and honest as we experienced it. He was not perfect, but he is also a victim.

Book excerpt: *This book is part of a SERIES and NOT a standalone.A gripping, friends-to-lovers-to-enemies, dark romance.New York City-not for the faint-hearted or the sweetest of souls. The last thing I expected was to be back in this city, after all these years. And I definitely did not expect to be back in this house, where it all started. I have spent years avoiding this place, and the cold hard reality of what happened here. But I have no choice. We are all quarantined together in this house. It took the end of the world, for me to come back here and face him.Milo Sinclair.Once my legal guardian and savior in life. The person who saved me from drowning in loneliness. Who gave me everything I ever wanted. But then he took everything away from me. Plus interest. He broke me. He will not break me again. This is a dark forbidden romance. It contains discussions about the pandemic, mental health issues, mature new adults. It also contains dubious situations that some readers might find offensive.Dark romance is subjective. Some readers have found this book to be a light read while others were sensitive to the material. Milo isn't a normal romance hero, and some might not consider him a hero at ALL. So, please don't read this if any of the above bothers you.Quarantined is book one of The Quarantine Series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deportation of 1,755 Jews from the islands of Rhodes and Cos in July 1944, shortly after the last deportation from Hungary, was the last transport to leave Greece for Auschwitz and brought to a close the last significant phase of the genocide of Europe's Jews (notwithstanding the death marches). Within six weeks of their deportation, the Germans were retreating from Greece and the Balkans as Hitler's empire shrank. This last deportation is frequently acknowledged in Holocaust literature but its significance for our understanding of the Nazi genocide of the Jews remains largely overlooked. The timing of the transport, when it was clear to the German military elite that Nazi Germany had lost the war, raises important questions in relation to long-term ideological Nazi goals and the immediate contingency thrown up by war. Anthony McElligott, in this account of the last Greek transport of Jews to Auschwitz, tells a compelling story of this previously underexplored event and sheds light on an important aspect of the Holocaust through an in-depth study of one Eastern Mediterranean community.

Book excerpt: THE YEAR OF THE METAL RAT, 2020, was a time of panic, uncertainty, and great division. CHINA, VIETNAM, CANADA, SAUDI ARABIA, ITALY, ARGENTINA, AMERICA, JAPAN, AUSTRALIA, PHILIPPINES, NETHERLANDS, GUATEMALA, UGANDA, THE U.K., SINGAPORE, RUSSIA… As the pandemic spread, some wore masks and socially distanced to protect the vulnerable, while others protested all public health measures as a form of tyranny and caused loud and obnoxious mass disruptions to critical infrastructure in a jarring display of 'personal freedom.' Fake news and echo chambers enabled 'alternative facts,' while unhinged narratives and cartoonish conspiracies ran rampant, often trumping coverage of legitimate and existential converging catastrophes. In YEAR OF THE RAT, the sequel to the international best-seller 'The Invisible War' (Kai's Diary), Jorah Kai documents the world’s largest ‘Zero Covid bubble’ while the outside world handles the pandemic uniquely. Reaching out to friends across the globe, he weaves their stories together. Thirty-six writers from 33 cities in 16 countries share their daily struggles, hopes, and fears for the YEAR OF THE RAT as the SARSCOV2 virus spreads catastrophe to every corner of the globe. "It’s ... the metaphor of the yin and the yang. I’d say right now; we are in the yin. It’s a kind of disaster. It’s sad. And on the yang side... it looks like some sort of a mathematical balance that I cannot explain." - JCVD “I would have done the whole thing for a donut and a tuna fish sandwich. The money meant nothing. It was the opportunity to at least prove to myself that I wasn’t a liar, that I wasn’t living a life of disillusionment. When you think of yourself as being a very creative person, and turn around and realize you’ve been leading a lie.” - Sylvester Stallone (Rocky). "At the beginning of the pandemic, Jorah Kai led a plucky band of frontline workers and activists to fight the pandemic with science. Some called him a harbinger, others a ‘pandemic guru’ as they navigated an increasingly bizarre world of book deals, TV appearances, speaking engagements, and a recovery event with his childhood hero, martial arts movie star Jeanne Claude Van Damme. But nothing could prepare him for what came next..." - The Narrator

Book excerpt: Enter if you dare into the spiritual world of light vs. dark, battling and clashing in an all-out war for the American Christian Church where good is called evil and evil good. Nothing is as it seems. The account relayed in Broken: A True Story of Spiritual Abuse is not for the faint of heart or timid of soul. Hear the story of one young American missionary woman to Asia and her encounter with the forces of darkness. Sabotage, betrayal, and deception lurk around every corner, beaming through the smiling faces of every friendly foe and threatening to assassinate true servants of the Lord. Learn how this woman stood the test of faith amidst the perfect storm and took steps toward recovery. Discover further within these pages the fallen state of mainstream Christianity’s spiritual leadership in the American nation and the open doors to enemy infiltration in its organizations. A weakened, counterfeit Church is sweeping masses into the pit of hell, whilst the gospel of Jesus Christ has been tainted and set aside by an entourage of wolves in sheep’s clothing in pulpits across the nation. In these pages you will read the exposing of ungodly “systems” within Christian organizations and the “95 Modern Theses” meant to counteract the behaviors and ideologies of these men and women currently steering the Church to an early grave—amidst the cackling delight of pure evil bent on total annihilation. An explanation of dark deeds serves to shed light on compromise in order to precede awakening, searching of Scriptures, illumination, purification, and reformation. The hour is urgent as judgment draws nigh. Will the Christian Church rise to the occasion?
