Technical thrusts included Nanocavity design and device development along with integration with the quantum dot (QD) active region. The first approach which we considered was to incorporate self-assembled QD5 into the starting epitaxial material, where the PC nanocavities are fabricated after growth. The PCs design and fabrication was optimized for high cavity Q and minimal cavity volume. In parallel, we developed nanopatterning capability to arbitrarily place a single QD or an ensemble of identical QUs within the PC.

Book excerpt: This thesis breaks new ground in the physics of photonic circuits for quantum optical applications. The photonic circuits are based either on ridge waveguides or photonic crystals, with embedded quantum dots providing the single qubit, quantum optical emitters. The highlight of the thesis is the first demonstration of a spin-photon interface using an all-waveguide geometry, a vital component of a quantum optical circuit, based on deterministic single photon emission from a single quantum dot. The work makes a further important contribution to the field by demonstrating the effects and limitations that inevitable disorder places on photon propagation in photonic crystal waveguides, a further key component of quantum optical circuits. Overall the thesis offers a number of highly novel contributions to the field; those on chip circuits may prove to be the only means of scaling up the highly promising quantum-dot-based quantum information technology.

Book excerpt: This book provides a broad overview of photonic crystals and, as the title suggests, covers their principles and applications. It is written from a physics point of view with an emphasis on materials science. Equations are well explained and often completely avoided to increase the readability of the book. The book is divided into eight chapters, starting with a brief introduction. The second chapter deals with different dimensionalities of the photonic crystals and their properties. The third chapter is very interestingly written and provides a survey of the various synthesis methods used for production of photonic crystals, including chemical routes, lithography, and self-assembly of colloidal photonic crystals. Chapters 4–8 constitute the bulk of the book and provide examples of applications of these photonic crystals. Chapter 4 offers a good explanation of optical switching. Bandgap and defect mode switching are also brought into focus along with many other mechanisms—14 different switching mechanisms in all, including thermal, electro, and magneto switching. Frequency tuning of photonic crystal filters with special attention to nanosize photonic crystals is illustrated, providing a direct perspective on applications of these materials in integrated photonic circuits. The transition from chapter 5 to 6 dealing with photonic crystal lasers is smooth, especially after a clear description of frequency tuning. Here, one- to three-dimensional photonic lasers are explained along with laser oscillations produced by a variety of microcavity methods. Metallodielectric and liquid-crystal photonic lasers are equally well illustrated. Chapter 7 introduces logic devices based on photonic crystals. This chapter clearly explains, with the help of simple illustrations, how to obtain AND, OR, and XOR logic gates. Chapter 8 concludes the book by presenting possible applications, including gas, chemical, fluid, and cell sensing; their workings are very well described from a fundamental point of view. The diagrams and illustrations are appropriate and eye catching. There are ample references; thus readers are able to find more detailed information to satisfy their curiosity if the book does not suffice. Even though the introduction provides basics of these photonic crystals, I do get the impression that the bigger picture is missing. A nonexpert may not understand the direct application of such materials right from the beginning of the book. A flowchart or a diagram of these photonic crystals, illustrating applications in daily life at the beginning of the book, could attract a broader readership. In this regard, I believe that this book is most adapted to physicists with a materials science background or vice versa. However, one should take into consideration that the principles of photonic crystals cannot be explained without physics, and therefore the quality of this book remains intact and could very well serve as a textbook for future physicists.

Book excerpt: Recently, the emission of single photons with wavelength in the 1.3um telecommunication window was demonstrated for InAs quantum dots. This makes them strong candidates for applications such as quantum cryptography, and in a longer term, quantum computing. However, efficient extraction of the spontaneous emission from semiconductors still represents a major challenge due to total internal reflection at the semiconductor/air interface. This thesis work explores the integration of quantum dots, with emission at 1.3um, in photonic crystal microcavities. Photons emitted in a mode of the cavity are funneled out of the semiconductor, and thus bypass the total internal reflection. In addition, the modified density of electromagnetic states in the cavity affects the emission lifetime of the weakly coupled emitter: in resonance, we assist to an increase of the emission rate, known as the Purcell effect. Photonic crystal microcavities conveniently address this objective as they provide modes with the required small volumes and high quality factors. They also allow the engineering of the farfield pattern of the cavity modes, and thus of the collection effiency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area of quantum information promises to deliver a range of new technologies in the fields of quantum computing and quantum communication. Devices based on semiconductor quantum dots hold great potential for the practical realisation of many of the components required in the proposed schemes. This thesis describes the development of several quantum dot devices. By integrating a quantum dot into a p-i-n diode, it was possible to control the dominant emission lines in its photoluminescence spectrum and to maximise the degree of polarisation correlation between the two photons emitted in the biexciton decay. With the same device under a magnetic field, a digital memory was demonstrated. The polarisation information of a single photon was stored as the spin of an electron inside the quantum dot, and was deterministically recovered some time later by the application of an electrical trigger. A fabrication process was developed in order to produce high quality two dimensional slab photonic crystals operating with a photonic band gap at ~ 900 nm. By placing a quantum dot into an appropriately designed H1 photonic crystal cavity, strong coupling was achieved between the dot and the monopole mode of the cavity. The vacuum Rabi splitting was found to be constant for all linear polarisations due to the unpolarised nature of the far-field of the mode. Finally, a new kind of cavity based on photonic crystal waveguides was developed. A Purcell enhancement of the in-plane spontaneous emission from a quantum dot coupled to a unidirectional photonic crystal waveguide was demonstrated.
