Book excerpt: Despite Kipling's popularity as an author and his standing as a politically controversial figure, much of his work has remained relatively unexamined due to its categorization as 'children's literature.' Sue Walsh challenges the apparently clear division between 'children's' and 'adult' literature, suggesting new directions for postcolonial and childhood studies and interrogating the way biographical criticism on children's literature in particular has tended to supersede and obstruct other kinds of readings.

Book excerpt: Cold Iron is a short story by Rudyard Kipling. Joseph Rudyard Kipling (30 December 1865 - 18 January 1936 was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He wrote tales and poems of British soldiers in India and stories for children. He was born in Bombay, in the Bombay Presidency of British India, and was taken by his family to England when he was five years old. Kipling's works of fiction include The Jungle Book (a collection of stories which includes "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi"), the Just So Stories (1902), Kim (1901), and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888). His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "If-" (1910). He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are enduring classics of children's literature; and one critic described his work as exhibiting "a versatile and luminous narrative gift." Kipling was one of the most popular writers in England, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry James said: "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius (as distinct from fine intelligence) that I have ever known." In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and its youngest recipient to date. Among other honours, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined. Kipling's subsequent reputation has changed according to the political and social climate of the age and the resulting contrasting views about him continued for much of the 20th century. George Orwell called him a "prophet of British imperialism." Literary critic Douglas Kerr wrote: "He [Kipling] is still an author who can inspire passionate disagreement and his place in literary and cultural history is far from settled. But as the age of the European empires recedes, he is recognised as an incomparable, if controversial, interpreter of how empire was experienced. That, and an increasing recognition of his extraordinary narrative gifts, make him a force to be reckoned with.

Book excerpt: Rudyard Kipling's book Stalky & Co. is about young men attending a British boarding school. Three young main characters in this collection of school stories have a smug, cynical attitude toward authority and patriotism. After the stories were featured in periodicals for the preceding two years, it was first published in 1899. Part I of ""Slaves of the Lamp."" Mr. King interrupts the three boys while they are practicing a pantomime of ""Aladdin"" because he has discovered jokes Beetle wrote about him. When the younger child who taught King the poems is there, he drags Beetle into his study and corrects him. Stalky gets an intoxicated carter to throw stones at King by shooting him with a catapult. In ""An Unsavoury Interlude,"" Mr. King makes fun of Beetle for once being frightened to take a bath in the ocean, which causes the boys from Mr. King's house to call the boys from Mr. Prout's house ""stinkers.""Many lads take part eagerly in order to train for their future professions as military officers. But when a member of parliament is asked to speak at the school on ""patriotism,"" he angers the lads by raising the Union Jack. The cadet corps left the next morning under Stalky's leadership. The majority of Kipling's characters, who are now about thirty, are soldiers or civil officials in India.

Book excerpt: Paragon of English virtues or racist imperialist? Andrew Lycett (acclaimed biographer of Ian Fleming) has returned to primary sources to tell the intricate story of a misunderstood genius who became Britain's most famous and highest earning author. Among the many new sources, Lycett has discovered previously unpublished letters that illuminate Kipling's crucial years in India, his first girlfriend (the model for Mrs Hauksbee of Plain Tales from the Hills), his parents' decision to send him back to England to boarding school; and in his adult life his use of opium, his frustrating times in London and the brief peace he found in America before the devastating loss of both his young daughter and, in the First World War, his son. Lycett also uncovers the extraordinary story of Kipling's great love for Flo Garrard, daughter of the crown jeweller, and unravels the complicated yet enthralling saga of the American family the Balestiers, and of Carrie Balestier who became Kipling's wife. This biography is full of new material on Kipling's financial dealings with Lord Beaverbrook, his friendships with T.E. Lawrence, the painter Edward Burne-Jones and the Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin (who was his cousin).

Book excerpt: A collection of Kipling's strangest tales with almost every one accompanied by a linked poem. As an SF fan I am of course delighted that the very first tale in the collection is science fiction "As Easy as A.B.C." the sequel to his "With the Night Mail" It also includes a depiction of hatred on the home front in "Mary Postgate" and contrasting humour in an extended revenge prank aimed at a whole town "The Village that Voted the Earth was Flat". One exceedingly mad tale made no sense the first three times I read it but became much (but not entirely) clearer when I discovered that the key unwritten word was witchcraft. However I will not give the title of that story so I don't entirely spoil it (Peter Dunn)
