Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Completely fascinating, Pinney's History of Wine in America combines a myriad of facts about all the states that have endeavored to grow grapes at any time since colonial days into a readable and coherent story. The only study to approach wine through its historical aspects, it will be invaluable to wine writers who want to include historical perspectives in their articles and it will be seized upon by grape growers and wineries throughout the country who want to discover their region's historical roots in viticulture and winemaking. A significant contribution to scholarship, this book should have broad appeal."—John R. McGrew, USDA Agricultural Research Service (retired)

Book excerpt: As a way to comment on a person’s style or taste, the word “tacky” has distinctly southern origins, with its roots tracing back to the so-called “tackies” who tacked horses on South Carolina farms prior to the Civil War. The Tacky South presents eighteen fun, insightful essays that examine connections between tackiness and the American South, ranging from nineteenth-century local color fiction and the television series Murder, She Wrote to red velvet cake and the ubiquitous influence of Dolly Parton. Charting the gender, race, and class constructions at work in regional aesthetics, The Tacky South explores what shifting notions of tackiness reveal about US culture as a whole and the role that region plays in addressing national and global issues of culture and identity.

Book excerpt: A political biography of the first African American hero of the Civil War A native of Beaufort, South Carolina, Robert Smalls was born into slavery but—through acts of remarkable courage and determination—became the first African American hero of the Civil War and one of the most influential African American politicians in South Carolina history. In this largely political biography of Smalls's inspirational story, Edward A. Miller, Jr., traces the triumphs and setbacks of the celebrated U.S. congressman and advocate of compulsory, desegregated public education to illustrate how the life and contributions of this singular individual were indicative of the rise and fall of political influence for all African Americans during this rough transitional period in American history.

Book excerpt: From the earliest days of the British colonies in America, land was freely given to those willing to come and settle. Oftentimes, it was the only inducement that brought colonists to the New World. At first, colonists considered free land a privilege, but it soon came to be seen as a right. When that right was later withheld by Great Britain, the colonists rebelled. Exploring how economic hierarchies led to vast inequality in England, this book details the realization that America would provide opportunities for economic mobility. As colonists learned how to manage the land in the New World, they also learned how to govern themselves. This book emphasizes how the control of free land in America laid the groundwork for revolution. Although covered broadly in other histories, this is the first work dedicated to exploring land ownership as a unique and direct cause of the American Revolution.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bond and Free: A Tale of the South Upon relating incidents which occurred under the observation of the writer, the suggestion has been frequently made to her that they should be recorded in a book, and placed within the reach of those who are interested in studying the habits of the Southern people before the late war. This volume is presented to the public in compliance with that request, since slavery is now so far removed from us by time that it has become historical. The contingencies of "the peculiar institution" invaded the domestic circle, made children masters and mistresses from infancy, causing them to be reared rulers over their sable playmates, and impressed on their unfolding minds ideas of superiority in. birth, which, as they advanced to manhood or womanhood, qualified them to exercise authority to a degree inconceivable by those raised with different surroundings. That miscegenation was of frequent occurrence is not to be denied; but mulatto children, being held by their darker mothers, were identified with the maternal race; yet there were instances where amalgamation was extended to successive generations, and State laws were enacted liberating those who possessed a certain degree of consanguinity with the Caucasian race. In the slave markets, among which that of New Orleans was pre-eminent, quadroon girls, possessing superior personal attractions, commanded a high price; and in exceptional instances, where they were received into families, and enjoyed advantages of mental and moral education, they became women of intelligence and sterling worth. Our heroine is not a myth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Colonial Tracts Monthly, Vol. 1 The Compiler of the following Volume having been led by circumstances into an examination somewhat extensive, of the sources of our history, experienced much difficulty in procuring the Pamphlets and smaller Tracts that relate to the Origin, Settlement and Progress of the American Colonies. Of the vast number of publications of this description that were made during the two centuries and a half succeeding the discovery of America, a few only can be found in this country, and these are almost entirely confined to libraries connected with our public institutions: many of them are of great value as authentic historical records, and all are interesting to those who take pleasure in tracing step by step the progress of the Colonies, in population, wealth, and power, within the comparatively short period that intervened between the landing of the first white man upon the Continent, and the establishment of a free and independent Government by the People of the United States of America. These considerations suggested the plan of the Collection now commenced. Of the thirteen Tracts contained in the present volume, Nos. 2 and 10 have not heretofore been printed, and Nos. 8 and 9 now appear for the first time in a connected form: the others, as will be seen by referring to the title pages which are copied at large, are republications. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Morningside, Vol. 2: December 14, 1897 The tidings of the coming sacrifice spread exceeding grief amongst our brethren and cast great fear into the hearts of the simple folk. For a score of years had no victim been Slain on the altar, and men had well nigh forgot the cruel rite. Yea, a score of years had they been free of that awful horror, to see their most beloved fall under the knife or writhe in the fell flames. But now came on again the old fear. They looked one at the other with terror in the eyes and wondered upon whom would fall the deadly lot. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
