This qualitative study utilizes participatory methods to gain the unique perspectives of small farmers regarding their success and challenges. Small farms are important players in local food systems and ensuring their success is an important part of expanding and sustaining local food systems. Findings provide a framework describing four dimensions of small farm success: social, operational, quality of life, and financial. The farmers in this study see financial success as a vital component of overall success, but acknowledge that financial success is not itself a success if achieved to the exclusion of other dimensions of success. This study developed four models for how small farmers perceive financial success: financial success as the baseline of overall success, equal dimensions of success, interdependent dimensions of success, and financial success as a gauge of overall success. Impeding small farm success are internal and external challenges that small farmers must navigate through the negotiation of the farm system and scale. Beginning and experienced farmers face the same challenges, but beginning farmers report internal challenges, land access, and access to capital at greater rates than experienced farmers. Experienced farmers speak more frequently about policy and regulations, and labor as challenges. Findings improve understanding of these innovative businesses, with implications for research, education, and small farm planning.

Book excerpt: Local food networks are often defined as presenting a variety of alternative food production, consumption, and distribution practices to the conventional food system such as community-supported-agriculture, farmers markets, and community gardens. Local food initiatives are commonly proposed as a model for the future of sustainable agriculture, and in the region of Portland, Oregon the abundance of such alternative venues results from the area's natural surroundings and smart planning. The region is host to 39 farmers markets and Portland is often hailed as one of the country's most sustainable cities. This study examines the role of local food networks in preserving agricultural land uses and livelihoods in Washington County, Oregon, a rapidly growing county adjacent to the city of Portland. I focus on small-scale agricultural landscapes where the producer sells at farmers markets or through community supported agriculture (CSAs). I explore farmers' concerns about urbanization and farmland preservation, their relationship to urban markets, motives to become a farmer, engagement with the surrounding environment, and their difficulties participating in local food networks. In addition, I explore farmers market managers' insights into the development of local food networks and how they see their markets supporting small-scale farmers. In a survey of consumers I examine consumer motives to `buy local' and consumer concerns about farmland preservation. The research is qualitative and explores: 1) the processes shaping the development of local food networks; 2) how particular ideas and images of nature and the countryside inform both consumer desires to purchase from farmers selling locally and; 3) how those same images of nature and the countryside inform and motivate people to become farmers participating in local food networks. In so doing, I argue that the networks that sustain urban and rural systems are important in understanding the development of local food networks, and that the preservation of economically and culturally important agricultural lands in Washington County depends on a diversity of opinions and rural narratives in order to preserve small-scale sustainable farmlands close-in to cities. The conclusion is that local food sold through alternative venues can be used as a means to preserve and develop specific and manageable farm sites and agricultural land uses but the impact is limited. Large scale impacts on agricultural land uses and livelihoods will depend on planners and advocates agreeing on policies that encompass a diversity of opinions, land uses, and land managers, while understanding the array of networks beyond the city that sustain both urban and rural systems.

Book excerpt: As recent interest has grown in the connections between how food is produced, distributed and consumed, and the overall health of food systems for people and the environment, a movement toward localizing food systems has emerged. In Lincoln County, Oregon, citizens, restaurateurs and university extension faculty, among others, have started to examine ways a more locally based food system can be encouraged and strengthened. However, this research assessing the current Lincoln County food system quickly indicated that very little food consumed in Lincoln County was produced there. Where are the farmers of Lincoln County? This research uses qualitative and historic data to analyze Lincoln County's present and past farming and food system. The analysis indicates there are two major types of farmers extant in the area: the "old pioneers" with large acreages and family connections dating back to the homesteading period, and "new pioneers" with smaller acreages who grow food either for subsistence or for specialty markets. This typology arises from adaptive strategies: one to the conditions of an increasingly industrializing food system in rapid transition at mid 20th century, and the other adapting to new niches created as a result of gaps in a large-scale, globalizing food system. Historic records show a much stronger local food system during the first half of the 20th century, complete with processing capacity such as creameries and canneries. To illustrate the change that has occurred, this analysis uses Iowa as a paradigm-setting place of agricultural perfection with which a distinctly un-Iowa place like Lincoln County could not compete. Smallholding farmers either consolidated landholdings or left farming due to economic pressures resulting from the industrialized feedback loop of increasing production and declining value of food commodities which came to characterize the trajectory of American agriculture post World War II. Therefore, planning a localized food system in Lincoln County in the present ought to more properly be considered relocalization. The past conditions of agricultural production and processing in Lincoln County may provide a useful frame of reference for the transition from a cheap energy large-scale food system to one that is thriftier and smaller-scale.
