In any event, I did not want to get out of office without expressing my appreciation and thanks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Health Bulletin Of course, concern for the health of the people is nothing new for us. North Carolina pioneered in the Better Health Movement during the 1940's and has never ceased its efforts to improve services. Under the leadership of the State Board of Health, an excellent system of local public health services has been developed. During this biennium a total of $800,000 was made available in State aid to local health departments. At the State level new programs are being implemented which will insure quality care in the transportation of the sick and injured and in genetic counselling. Existing programs for the control of salt marsh mosquitoes, for the inspection of food and lodging establishments and for the dental care program were strengthened. The fine system of local hospitals is a credit to many people who worked on the local, State and Federal levels under the coordination of the North Caroline Medical Care Commission. North Carolina now ranks 12th from the top among States in the number of hospitals and 15th in the number of hospital beds constructed and 3rd in the number of Public Health Centers developed under the cooperative financing program. North Carolina has at Chapel Hill the only State-supported medical center in the South, with major professional schools for medicine, dentistry, nursing, public and pharmacy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the North Carolina State Board of Health, 1877-1925: North Carolina State Board of Health, Raleigh, North Carolina, 1966 The two main sources of information regarding public health work in North Carolina are the Biennial Reports of the State Board of Health and the Transactions of the State Medical Society. The Biennial Reports are made to each session of the General Assembly and transmitted through the Governor, while 'the Transactions are published yearly following the meetings of the State Medical Society. After its formation in 1911, the Transactions of the North Carolina Public Health Association were included, as a separate section, in the Transactions of the State Society. The history of the public health movement in the State is to a large extent the history of the State Board of Health and of the Medical Society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Seventh Biennial Report of the North Carolina State Board of Health: July 1, 1936 June 30, 1938 In the seventies Dr. Thomas Fanning Wood, of Wilmington, caught the vision of the possibilities of public health work to North Carolina. How fully he grasped the far-reaching consequences of his idea, how clearly he saw the ever-growing hosts of lives saved as a result of his vision and inspiration, we shall never know. We do know that the vision never left him, and that under its sway he worked, through the Medical Journal which he edited and through the North Carolina State Medical Society until his in uence reached the people of the State in their Gen eral Assembly of 1877, with the effect that on February 12, 1877, the North Carolina State Board of Health was born. Too Often these men are appointed on account of political influence and not because they have any knowledge on the subject of milk. As a result, their insanitary ways of testing the milk's temper ature and of taking samples are often an added source of contamination which may cause harm unless the sampled milk is pasteurized.
