Book excerpt: Are there potentials in central city revitalization? What role will the federal government play in determining future retail locational choices? Shopping center development has never been more popular-or more hazardous than it is today. Retail distribution in the United States has greater efficiency than anywhere else in the world, a tribute to the adaptability and rationalization of systems which have characterized the field. The pressures of the future, however, require greater exertion if they are to be adequately met. The industry drive to the new "middle markets" may change the face of small city America-or it may lead to a blind alley. As central cities, aided by EDA (Economic Development Administration) and UDAG (Urban Development Action Grant), gird up for revitalization in the face of reduced real buying power, these issues take on increased vigor. A whole new legal fabric is evolving in the development of major commercial facilities. Does it mark the path of the future-or is it an ineffectual last gasp effort to reshape the basic overwhelming trend lines of American life? How do we get a grasp on these parameters? Whether city planner, economic or marketing consultant, investor, or developer-much of our future depends on the answers. The authorities brought together for these specially sponsored papers are the best in the business-and provide key insights into this dynamic field. Demographics and consumer response that challenge marketing and planning professionals are also included.

Book excerpt: This publication examines a variety of cases that demonstrate the aesthetic quality of transportation projects. These range from the relatively inexpensive painted "Gus Bus" in Grand Rapids to the large-scale project of designing the Montreal Metro. The purpose is to develop a fresh perspective on ways the visual appeal of transportation can be identified as a distinct element for consideration, and on the degree to which quality design contributes to the economics and function of transportation systems. A second purpose is to develop guidance and examples to assist transportation planners and citizens in dealing with these issues. The projects presented represent a wide range of costs and circumstances encountered in transportation planning. The study shows that the aesthetic benefits provided by quality materials, sensitive design, careful maintenance, and appropriate inclusion of works of art translate directly into increased patronage, cost efficiencies, and a better public environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years that followed World War II, both the United States and the newly formed West German republic had an opportunity to remake their economies. Since then, much has been made of a supposed “Americanization” of European consumer societies—in Germany and elsewhere. Arguing against these foggy notions, Jan L. Logemann takes a comparative look at the development of postwar mass consumption in West Germany and the United States and the emergence of discrete consumer modernities. In Trams or Tailfins?, Logemann explains how the decisions made at this crucial time helped to define both of these economic superpowers in the second half of the twentieth century. While Americans splurged on private cars and bought goods on credit in suburban shopping malls, Germans rebuilt public transit and developed pedestrian shopping streets in their city centers—choices that continue to shape the quality and character of life decades later. Outlining the abundant differences in the structures of consumer society, consumer habits, and the role of public consumption in these countries, Logemann reveals the many subtle ways that the spheres of government, society, and physical space define how we live.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polls are conducted every day all around the world for almost everything (especially during elections). But not every poll is a good one. A lot depends on the type of questions asked, how they are asked and whether the sample used is truly representative. And these are not the only aspects of a poll that should be checked. So how does one separate the chaff from the wheat? That’s where Understanding Public Opinion Polls comes in. Written by a well-known author with over thirty years of experience, the book is built around a checklist for polls that describes the various aspects of polls to pay attention to if one intends to use its results. By comprehensively answering the questions in the checklist, a good idea of the quality of the poll is obtained. Features: Provides readers with a deeper understanding of practical and theoretical aspects of opinion polls while assuming no background in mathematics or statistics Shows how to determine if a poll is good or bad Provides a historical perspective and includes examples from real polls Gives special attention to online and election polls The book gives an overview of many aspects of polls – questionnaire design, sample selection, estimation, margins of error, nonresponse and weighting. It is essential reading for those who want to gain a better understanding of the ins and outs of polling including those who are confronted with polls in their daily life or work or those who need to learn how to conduct their own polls.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 2000 national elections, $100 million was spent on campaign polling alone. A $5 billion industry from Gallup to Zogby, public opinion polling is growing rapidly with the explosion of consumer-oriented market research, political and media polling, and controversial Internet polling. By many measures from editorial cartoons to bumper stickers we hate pollsters and their polls. We think of polling as hopelessly flawed, invasive of our privacy, and just plain annoying. At times we even argue that polling is illegal, unconstitutional, and downright un-American. Yet we crave the information polling provides. What do other Americans think about gun control? School vouchers? Airline performance?

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2022 Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Outstanding Book Award! Shopping While Black: Consumer Racial Profiling in America lays out the results of nearly two decades of research on racial profiling in retail settings. Gabbidon and Higgins address the generally neglected racial profiling that occurs in retail settings. Although there is no existing national database on shoplifting or consumer racial profiling (CRP) from which to study the problem, they survey relevant legal cases and available data sources. This problem clearly affects a large number of racial/ethnic minorities, and causes real harm to the victims, such as the emotional trauma attached to being excessively monitored in stores and, in the worst-case scenarios, falsely accused of shoplifting. Their analysis is informed by their own experience: one co-author is a former security executive for a large retailer, and both are Black men who understand firsthand the sting of being profiled because of their color. After providing an overview of the history of CRP and the official and unofficial data sources and criminological literature on this topic, they address public opinion polls, as well as the extent and impact of victimization. They also provide a review of CRP litigation, provide recommendations for retailers to reduce racial profiling, and also chart some directions for future research. This book is appropriate for researchers as well as advanced undergraduates and graduate students in Criminology, Black Studies, Ethnic Studies, Sociology, Security Studies, and Law programs, and will be of interest to the general reader.

Book excerpt: The Handbook of Marketing Scales, Third Edition represents a clear, concise, and easy-to-use compilation of multi-item, self-report measures developed and/or frequently used in consumer behavior and marketing research. - Over 150 scales are included in the handbook. Many of these scales were originally published in marketing- and consumer-related journals or conference proceedings. Including them in one volume helps reduce the time it takes to locate instruments for survey research. - Scales included have a reasonable theoretical base, are developed within the marketing or consumer behavior literature, are composed of several items or questions, use some scaling procedures, and include estimates of reliability and/or validity, making these scales especially relevant and “proven” for marketing scholars and professionals. - Each scale includes the following information so that users can quickly and easily learn about the scale: construct, description, development, samples, validity, scores, sources, other evidence, other sources, references, and scale items.
