Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychology and Preaching The field of educational psychology has been very thoroughly worked over, though the last word has by no means been said. The help which teachers have derived from it is very great, and no one now is considered equipped for that noble profession who has not mastered its principles. But so far as my knowledge extends there have been few serious efforts to apply modern psychology to preaching. Indeed, the statement might be made even more nearly absolute without doing violence to facts. There have been homiletical works almost without number, applying the formal rules of logic and rhetoric to sermon-making, and books on elocution are even more numerous. But the works discussing the preparation and delivery of sermons rarely, if ever, approach the subject from the standpoint of modern functional psychology. The psychological conceptions underlying most of these treatises belong to a stage of psychological thought long since past. But there seems to be just as much reason for applying the principles of modern psychology to preaching as for applying them to teaching. And the works on educational psychology will not suffice for this purpose, although they are often suggestive and helpful to the preacher. In some respects educational and homiletical psychology coincide, but they are by no means coextensive; and when they cover the same ground there are of necessity important differences of emphasis. In this book some aspects of the psychology of religion are discussed, because they lie within the scope of the authors plan; but the book is not a treatise on the psychology of religion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handy book contains a guide to constructing a sermon. With many priceless tips on the development, relevance and structuring of a message, this book will be an invaluable addition to the bookshelf of any preacher. Everything about sermon construction is examined with perception and insight: the beginning the conclusion, and how to prepare for preaching. No one can preach without preparing their own inner life. Sangter preached his most moving sermon as he lay dying slowly fir a few years from an incurable disease. In that experience he touched more preachers by “the amassing of great soul so as o have something worthwhile to give.” Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing many of these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Book excerpt: According to Warren Wiersbe, The Supremacy of God in Preaching "calls us back to a biblical standard for preaching, a standard exemplified by many of the pulpit giants of the past, especially Jonathan Edwards and Charles Spurgeon." This newly revised and expanded edition is an essential guide for preachers who want to stir the embers of revival. Piper has added valuable new material reflecting on his thirty-three years of preaching at Bethlehem Baptist Church, offering a glimpse of what a lifetime of putting God first has done for the faith of the hundreds of thousands who have heard him preach over the years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tensions often cited between psychology and Christianity are well known. Much worthwhile work has been done to construct theories and frameworks for integrating the two. But how do Christians in psychology actually weave together these strands of their lives and their work. What are their stories? Here Glendon Moriarty brings together twelve of the foremost clinicians and academics in the field of Christian integration to share their stories. Coming from different perspectives and experiences, reflecting gender and ethnic diversity, these prominent psychologists tell about their spiritual, personal and professional journeys of interrelating their faith and profession. In this book we hear about the developmental issues, the sense of calling and the early career insights that shaped their paths. They recount the importance that significant relationships had on their understanding of Christian integration, especially noting the influence of mentors. Struggles and doubts are common human experiences, and the contributors openly share the stresses they encountered to encourage others with similar issues. On a day-to-day basis, we see how spiritual disciplines and the Christian community assist them in their work and in their understanding. Finally, each writer offers a personal note with lessons learned and hard-won wisdom gained. Randall Sorenson once said, "The integration of psychology and Christianity is caught, not taught." In these stories is a unique opportunity to catch sight of twelve who have already traveled that challenging path.
