Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will likely irritate every reader at some point. One chapter is so bold it intones the good of a mother who kills her children. The chapter does not say the murderous mother was a good woman, or that she did a good thing; it doesn’t say that her actions should be without penalty or consequence. The chapter suggests, basically, in a metaphoric and anecdotal ending, that the mother loves the ones she killed. PsychoBabbleJabble is full of these kinds of challenges; this book is written and designed to tackle human judgment. My work as a therapist, a clinician, and as a helper in different settings, and in different states even (I am licensed in Florida, the District of Columbia, and Missouri), plus with my hypnosis training, all of these play a role in this writing. The reader will see and experience the maneuvering of words, each used to explain and help promote understanding in how people’s judgments are formed. Many judgments are those that I like to call ‘terminal thoughts.’ For some reason or another, certain thoughts are seemingly non-negotiable to the holder of them. With terminal thoughts in mind (we all have them), I’m able to, using my writing, go with the reader using their various lines of thinking, as if their beliefs are absolutely true. Then, near each chapter ending, I include an alternative and new perspective, where a question about the once absolute belief is now wedged toward and in between a different belief. ‘Wedged,’ meaning a small detail of alternative thought is strategically placed juxtaposition to a terminal thought, that the reader once used (or uses still, maybe) to hold up a rationale supporting ‘truth.’ By each chapters end, the belief is jolted loose a tiny bit, hopefully. It is in that jolting, where a belief becomes finally questioned and questionable. This text contains my best writing and some of my best clinical recall. All of my training is included in some way in every part of this text; the hypnosis training kicks my writing up a notch. Here, using people’s RIGHTNESS as an ally in shaping a new belief, I contradict the old truth while valuing it, in key and passionate areas of what might be called life and the people that make it so. That’s what I’d say this book hopes to do – to jolt loose, just a little bit those absolute judgments we as humans may unknowingly, without ill intent, and possibly mistakenly hold as settled.

"I became suicidal because of multiple intense involvements." "I spent money on sex when I needed it for children's clothes." "I lost promotion opportunities and a special scholarship because my co-workers found out about my sex life." They come from all walks of life: ministers, physicians, therapists, politicians, executives, blue-collar workers. Most were abused as children--sexually, physically or emotionally--and saw addictive behavior in their early lives. Most grapple with other addictions as well, but their fiercest battle is with the most astounding prevalent "secret" disorder in America: sexual addiction. Here is a ground-breaking work by the nation's leading professional expert on sexual addiction, based on the candid testimony of more than one thousand recovering sexual addicts in the first major scientific study of the disorder. This essential volume includes not only the revealing findings of Dr. Carne's research with recovering addicts but also advice from the addicts and co-addicts themselves as they work to overcome their compulsive behavior. Positive, hopeful, and practical, Don't Call It Love is a landmark book that helps us better understand all addictions, their causes, and the difficult path to recovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the ways the immune system, epigenetics, affect regulation, and attachment intersect in mental health. The evolution of psychotherapy in the 21st Century demands integration. Instead of choosing from the blizzard of modalities and schools of the past, therapists must move toward finding common denominators among them. Similarly, today’s psychotherapy necessitates the integration of the mind and body, not the past practice of compartmentalization of mental health and physical health. This book contributes to the sea change in how we conceptualize mental health problems and their solutions. Mind-Brain-Gene describes the feedback loops between the multiple systems contributing to the emergence of the mind and the experience of the self. It explains how our mental operating networks “self”-organize, drawing from and modifying our memory systems to establish and maintain mental health. Synthesizing research in psychoneuroimmunology and epigenetics with interpersonal neurobiology and research on integrated psychotherapeutic approaches, John Arden explores how insecure attachment, deprivation, child abuse, and trauma contribute to anxiety disorders and depression to produce epigenetic affects. To help people suffering from anxiety and depression, it is necessary to make sense of the multidirectional feedback loops between the stress systems and the dysregulation of the immune system that lead to those conditions. Successful psychotherapy modifies the feedback loops among the self-maintenance systems. Through the orchestration of the mental operating networks, psychotherapy promotes the re-regulation of immune system functions, stress systems, nutrition, microbiome (gut bacteria), sleep, physical inactivity, affect regulation, and cognition. This book makes a strong case for healthcare and psychotherapy to be combined—together they can revolutionize the way we conceive of, and attain, optimal health in the 21st Century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Behavioral Addictions provides a pragmatic and engaging guide to help clinicians understand and contextualize conditions that may not be clearly delineated in the DSM-5 diagnostic system. Although not accorded a specific classification, the behaviors addressed in this book share the accepted hallmarks of addiction—continued engagement in an action despite negative consequences and loss of control over one’s own life. The editors begin with an overview of the behavioral addictions from neurobiological, theoretical, clinical, and forensic perspectives and then present 12 case studies focused on a variety of behaviors, from exercising to Internet gaming and from kleptomania to tanning. These real-life case studies are both fascinating and instructive, and along with accompanying videos, they help trainees and practicing clinicians alike to digest current research and gain “hands-on” experience with the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions. In the realm of behavioral addictions, there is much work to be done: figuring out reliable diagnostic criteria, building useful assessment tools, and developing effective psychosocial and pharmacological treatments, to name a few critical tasks. The Behavioral Addictions is an indispensable, case-based resource to guide clinicians in this rapidly changing field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a line be analysed mathematically such a way that it does not fall apart into a set of discrete points? Are there objects of pure mathematics that can change through time? L. E. J. Brouwer argued that the two questions are related and that the answer to both is "yes", introducing the concept of choice sequences. This book subjects Brouwer's choice sequences to a phenomenological critique in the style of Husserl.

Book excerpt: Jesus and Moses are Buried in India, Birthplace of Abraham and the Hebrews! is a new kind of biblical history that brings out facts, not myths and guessing games. Unlike priests and preachers, who exhort their followers to swallow lies and spiritual ordure, I don't want my readers to swallow what I say naively. They should check all my references for themselves. This book follows the ancestors of the Hebrews from Eastern Siberia down to what is now the Indian subcontinenet; later, to what is now Israel. You'll be surprised to find out who and what Jehovah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Jesus really were. The book also blasts dangerous myths, such as the Christian fundamentalists' assertion that "God" wants nearly all Jews to die in a "Battle of Armageddon." That war happened in India, thousands of years ago. We're now in Millennium 2000. It's time for mankind to let truth take over his existence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The full title of Newton’s Principia is “The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy.” Sadly, some contemporary philosophers might be hard-pressed to say just what natural philosophy is about—sadly, because it remains foundational to questions arising in other disciplines: metaphysics, ethics, philosophical psychology, and the philosophy of god, to name a few. In Nature, the Soul, and God, Jean Rioux has brought together primary readings in the philosophy of nature, presenting ways in which philosophers conceive of and account for the natural world in a pre-scientific reflection upon the way things are. Its three main sections comprise: a consideration of what the world would look like if natural philosophy were not possible, some representative natural philosophies (materialism, formalism, dualism, and hylomorphism), as well as an investigation into the implications these philosophies of nature have for other important questions, such as human freedom and the immortality of the human soul. Through the medium of philosophers both ancient and modern, Rioux makes the point that one’s philosophical account of the natural world will inevitably have an impact upon how one regards oneself, and even things divine. It all begins with nature.

Ben takes us on a journey of how he feels across situations - at his birthday party, with people he's unable to talk to, on playdates and at school. Through the story, we also learn that Ben's best friend has a fear of swimming and by taking small steps he works to overcome this. Ben shares, in a child-friendly way, his feelings around talking and interwoven into the story is the intervention of how he begins to make steps forward. Parents and professionals can use this book as a therapeutic tool to begin a dialogue with children about selective mutism. The story is suitable for children aged 6 years and over. Through beautiful illustrations, children will identify with Ben, realising that they are not alone; thus allowing for a conversation to begin about their difficulty with talking, as well as the steps to help them. About the Author Lucy Nathanson is a child therapist and founder of Confident Children. Lucy is passionate about helping children with selective mutism. She works directly with children and makes videos with the aim of spreading awareness of selective mutism.
