Book excerpt: Spin-flip probabilities S/sub nn/ have been measured for inelastic proton scattering at incident proton energies around 300 MeV from a number of nuclei. At low excitation energies S/sub nn/ is below the free value. For excitation energies above about 30 MeV for momentum transfers between about 0.35 fm/sup /minus/1/ and 0.65 fm/sup / minus/1/ S/sub nn/ exceeds free values significantly. These results suggest that the relative .delta. S = 1(.delta. S = 0 + .delta. S = 1) nuclear spin response approaches about 90% in the region of the enhancement. Comparison of the data with slab response calculations are presented. Decomposition of the measured cross sections into sigma(.delta. S = 0) and sigma(.delta. S = 1) permit extraction of nonspin-flip and spin-flip dipole and quadrupole strengths. 29 refs., 11 figs.

Book excerpt: Angular distributions of the double-differential cross section d2[sigma]/d[Omega] dE([sigma]) and the spin-flip probability Snn have been measured for inclusive proton inelastic scattering from 44Ca at 290 MeV and from 48Ca at 318 MeV. Excitation energies up to about 50 MeV for 44Ca and 40 MeV for 48Ca have been investigated over the laboratory angular ranges of 3° to 12° for 44Ca and 3° to 9° for 48Ca. Multipole decompositions of angular distributions of both the spin-flip cross section [sigma]Snn and the estimated cross section for [Delta]S=0 transitions have been performed. Distributions of strengths were deduced for [Delta]L=1, [Delta]S=0 (the giant dipole), [Delta]L=2, [Delta]S=0 (the giant quadrupole), [Delta]L=0, [Delta]S=1 (the magnetic dipole), [Delta]L=1, [Delta]S=1 (the spin dipole), and [Delta]L=2, [Delta]S=1 (the spin quadrupole). The [Delta]S=0 summed strengths for 44Ca are lower than for 40Ca and 48Ca. The spin-dipole summed strengths are found to be approximately independent of A. For 48Ca, essentially all M1 strength observed was in the 10.23 MeV 1+ state; for 44Ca, M1 strength was observed to be fragmented over a range of 7 to 18 Mev.

Book excerpt: Cross sections, analyzing powers, and spin-flip probabilities have been measured in the low momentum transfer region in the 9°Zr(p vector, p' vector) 9°Zr* reaction at 319 MeV. A rich fine structure is observed for the first time in inelastic proton scattering in the previously proposed M1 giant resonance region. Angular distribution of most of these states are consistent with M1 excitation. The excitation energies of the fine structure states are in good agreement with similar structure seen in electron scattering; however, discrepancies in spin assignments remain. The measured cross section for the entire bump is about 37 +- 10% of the Distorted Wave Impulse Approximation (DWIA) prediction for the M1 strength in 9°Zr with simple wave functions. However, an analysis of the fine structure states reveals about 15% of the strength in the M1 region to be due to narrow El states; another 8% is attributed to M2 strength. The spin-flip measurements for 9°Zr reveal a large spin-flip probability value for the M1 region; good agreement is obtained with DWIA calculations. However, a large cross section for spin excitations distributed uniformly over the excitation energy region from about 7 to 25 MeV is observed for the first time. The spin excitation strength in this giant resonance continuum is found to about 0.80 mb/sr/MeV. Angular distributions for the spin-flip cross sections from 7 to 18 MeV in steps of 2 MeV have been analyzed with low multipole spin excitation calculations in the DWIA framework; the observed spin-flip strength in this region is found to be consistent with spin excitation involving angular momentum transfer of up to two. Finally, cross section, analyzing power, and spin-flip probability data have also been obtained for the 10.23 MeV M1 transition in the 48Ca(p vector, p' vector)48Ca* reaction at 319 MeV. The quenching of M1 strength in 48Ca relative to theoretical predictions is found to be consistent with previous work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inelastic scattering experiment was done in which 17-MeV protons from the Oregon State University cyclotron were scattered from 14N and 15N gas targets. Angular distributions are shown for the ground, 6.32-, 7.56-, 8.31-, and 8.57 -MeV states and the 5.3- and 7.2-MeV unresolved doublets of 15N, and for the ground, 2.3-, 3.9-, 6.2-, 6.4-, and 7.0-MeV states and the 5-, 5.7-, 8-, and 8.5-MeV unresolved doublets of 14N. Reasonable fits to the data were obtained for the 6.32 -MeV 15N state and the 2.3- and 3.9-MeV 14N states using a microscopic potential in a coupled-channel calculation. The use of a tensor force improved the fits to both the 6.32-MeV 15N state and the 2.3-MeV 14N state. A weak-coupling model was considered in which excited 15N states are formed by coupling a p1/2 proton hole to excited states of 16O. The model adequately represents the 5.27- and 7.56-MeV 15N states as being formed from the 6.13-MeV 16O state, and the 5.30- and 7. 30 -MeV 15N states as being formed from the 7.12 -MeV 16O state. The 6.32-MeV 15N state does not seem to be related to the 6.92-MeV 16O state, but evidence was presented that the 9.16 -MeV 15N state is related by the weak-coupling model to the 6.92-MeV 16O state.
