Book excerpt: The First Ovarian Workshop was held in June 1976; its goal was to achieve a collective understanding of current thought on ovarian follicular development and function, and to generate clear definitions of the most important areas to be explored in the future. The Ovarian Workshops quickly became a major biennial event for the community of reproduc tive biologists and their students studying ovarian function. As a young graduate student, I gave my first scientific presentation at the First Ovarian Workshop and I have attended all but one of the subsequent meetings. The Workshops provided a unique forum for the sharing ofideas with colleagues studying closely related problems. I was therefore especially pleased to have been asked to organize the Seventh Ovarian Workshop and to be given an opportunity to help perpetuate these important meetings. The Seventh Ovarian Workshop was held on the campus of the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington on July 31 and August 1, 1988. Serono Symposia USA generously financed and coordinated the meeting. I would like to express my particular thanks to Dr. L. Lisa Kern and Dr. James Posillico for their invaluable help prior to, during, and after the meeting. I would also like to thank Mary Benson and her staff at the University of Puget Sound who made us feel at home in every way.
Book Synopsis Biology of Ovarian Follicles in Mammals by : S.S. Guraya
Download or read book Biology of Ovarian Follicles in Mammals written by S.S. Guraya and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both functions of the mammalian ovary, the endocrine and (synthesis and secretion of steroid hormones) and exocrine (production of ova), depend upon the presence and cyclic growth of follicles, as the depletion of primordial follicles from the ovary leads to cessation of these f-unctions or female reproduction in mammals, or to postmenopausal period in humans. Actually, various fertility and sterility problems at the ovarian level are related to follicles. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the biology of ovarian follicles in mammals is of fundamental interest to a wide variety of academic and scientific disciplines. Study of their structure, function, and control involves mor phology, including ultrastructure, cell biology, physiology, endocrinology, biochemis try, immunology, neurobiology and pharmacology. Zoologists take interest in comparative and evolutionary aspects of biology of ovarian follicles in many different groups of mammals. Agricultural scientists and wildlife biologists need a thorough knowledge of the biology of follicles to control more effectively fecundity in domestic animals and endangered species of mammals. Finally, clinical scientists, toxicologists and physicians want to know the normal and pathological features of ovarian follicles in women, especially in relation to health and the regulation of fertility. Having in view the great importance of studying various aspects of biology of ovarian follicles, numerous papers and reviews on several aspects of ovarian follicles are published annually in a wide variety of scientific journals.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid advances have taken place in various aspects of reproductive biology during the last decade. These advances have centered around several organ systems that comprise the reproductive system and encompass molecular events and structure-function relationships. It becomes important to review these advances in knowledge, at periodic intervals, with respect to feedback systems and regulatory loops that control reproductive processes in vivo. Towards this end, a workshop entitled "Functional Correlates of Hormone Receptors in Reproduction" sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the Reproductive Biology Study Section of the Division of Research Grants, National Institutes of Health was held in October 1980. The proceedings of the workshop were published by Elsevier Biomedical/New York. This workshop was followed by two workshops sponsored by the Reproductive Biology Study Section of the Division of Research Grants, National Institutes of Health entitled "Role of Peptides and Proteins in Control of Reproduction" in February 1982 and published by Elsevier Biomedical and "Molecular and Cellular Aspects of Reproduction" in October 1985 and published by Plenum Press. It was, therefore, timely to review the current state of knowledge regarding the regulation of ovarian and testicular function by bringing together scientists working in separate and discrete aspects of reproduction to review the functional implications of their research on the regulation of function within the same tissue and also in relationship to feedback systems and regulatory loops with other tissues.
Book Synopsis Principles and Practice of Fertility Preservation by : Jacques Donnez
Download or read book Principles and Practice of Fertility Preservation written by Jacques Donnez and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The specialty of fertility preservation offers patients with cancer, who are rendered infertile by chemo- and radiotherapy, the opportunity to realize their reproductive potential. This gold-standard publication defines the specialty. The full range of techniques and scientific concepts is covered in detail, and the author team includes many of the world's leading experts in the field. The book opens with introductions to fertility preservation in both cancer and non-cancer patients, followed by cancer biology, epidemiology and treatment, and reproductive biology and cryobiology. Subsequent sections cover fertility preservation strategies in males and females, including medical/surgical procedures, ART, cryopreservation and transplantation of both ovarian tissue and the whole ovary, and in-vitro follicle growth and maturation. Concluding chapters address future technologies, as well as ethical, legal and religious issues. Richly illustrated throughout, this is a key resource for all clinicians specializing in reproductive medicine, gynecology, oncology, hematology, endocrinology and infertility.
