Book excerpt: A conservation easement is a legal agreement between a property owner and a conservation organization, generally a private nonprofit land trust, that restricts the type and amount of development that can be undertaken on that property. Conservation easements protect land for future generations while allowing owners to retain property rights, at the same time providing them with significant tax benefits. Conservation easements are among the fastest growing methods of land preservation in the United States today. Protecting the Land provides a thoughtful examination of land trusts and how they function, and a comprehensive look at the past and future of conservation easements. The book: provides a geographical and historical overview of the role of conservation easements analyzes relevant legislation and its role in achieving community conservation goals examines innovative ways in which conservation easements have been used around the country considers the links between social and economic values and land conservation Contributors, including noted tax attorney and land preservation expert Stephen Small, Colorado's leading land preservation attorney Bill Silberstein, and Maine Coast Heritage Trust's general counsel Karin Marchetti, describe and analyze the present status of easement law. Sharing their unique perspectives, experts including author and professor of geography Jack Wright, Dennis Collins of the Wildlands Conservancy, and Chuck Roe of the Conservation Trust of North Carolina offer case studies that demonstrate the flexibility and diversity of conservation easements. Book excerpt: No matter how much you try to leave your past behind, it doesn’t always leave you… Sean After being hired for my dream job, I move back to the small-minded town where I grew up, for the job and to finish my degree. I’m surrounded by my past, by old classmates, old neighbourhoods and old prejudices against gay people. But on my first day back, my eyes fall on something new around here. A goth guy sitting at the front of the class and I can’t keep my eyes off him. Even though I don’t know him, I feel like I need to protect him, no matter what. Jules I can’t stay in the same place for too long. People start to notice that you don’t age, that you don’t get older, and add to that that the chance of vampire hunters finding you gets bigger the longer you stay… I know that I’m running out of time in this town. I need to move on. I just need to finish my degree and then I can leave and start over somewhere else. But when my housemate/blood donor turns on me and forces me to leave, I suddenly find myself asking for help from the new guy in our class. Leaving doesn’t look as appealing anymore… This is the first short novel about vampire Jules and human Sean in The Vampire’s Past series. It takes place in a world of all sorts of creatures, vampires, werewolves, mages and, of course, humans, but there are also hunters, trying to rid the world of the un-humans. Dive into this new series by Rosa Swann!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine protected areas (MPAs) have an important role in marine conserva tion programmes around the world. Although most have been established relatively recently when compared with protected areas on land, there is considerable expertise on their identification, setting up and management. Some techniques have been adapted from those used on land. Others are novel, and unique to marine conservation. The chapters in this book give an insight into this fast developing field where experiment and innovation work alongside techniques which have been tried and tested. The guiding princi ples behind key stages in the setting up and management of MP As are described, and case studies illustrate how they have worked. While it is most encouraging to read about the successes, the case studies also point to difficulties which have been encountered. Not all of the examples are new or recent but, together, they illustrate what is happening in this field.

Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive review of the Intergovernmental Committee (IGC) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) established in 2000. It provides an in-depth consideration of the key thematic areas within WIPO discussions – genetic resources (GRs), traditional knowledge (TK) and traditional cultural expressions (TCEs) through the perspectives of a broad range of experts and stakeholders, including indigenous peoples and local communities. It also looks at how these areas have been treated in a number of forums and settings (including national systems and experiences, and also in trade agreements) and the interface with WIPO discussions. Furthermore, the book analyses the process and the negotiation dynamics since the IGC received a mandate from WIPO members, in 2009, to undertake formal text-based negotiations towards legal instruments for the protection of GR, TK and TCEs. While there has been some progress in these negotiations, important disagreements persist. If these are to be resolved, the adoption of these legal instruments would be a significant development towards resolving key gaps in the modern intellectual property system. In this regard, the book considers the future of the IGC and suggests options which could contribute towards achieving a consensual outcome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Pitcairn is a book that provides an overview of the history, culture, and geography of Pitcairn Island. The book begins by describing how the island was discovered by Europeans in 1767 and subsequently settled by a group of British mutineers and Tahitian women in 1790. It then goes on to detail how the Pitcairn Islanders built a society on the island, despite facing significant challenges such as shortages of food and water, disease, and isolation. The book also covers the island's natural environment, wildlife, and attractions, such as its tropical climate and pristine beaches. The second paragraph of the book offers insight into the culture and way of life on Pitcairn Island. The book describes how the Pitcairn Islanders have developed a unique culture, blending elements of British and Polynesian cultures, and have also maintained a strong sense of community, despite their small population of approximately 50 people. The book also details the economy of the island, which is primarily focused on fishing and handicrafts, and explains how the Pitcairn Islanders have managed to preserve their traditional way of life while also integrating modern technologies and practices. Overall, Introduction to Pitcairn is a fascinating introduction to a remote and little-known island that has managed to develop a distinctive culture and way of life despite its many challenges.

Book excerpt: This second book of the Real Magic series continues to explore the ancient Hermetic Teachings as “A mental art—the art of using consciousness itself as the tool for creating changes in consciousness.” What does the Hermetic axiom “as above, so below” really mean? The relationship between macrocosm (above) and microcosm (below) is the key to the Hermetic Teachings. Macrocosm refers to the Eternal Reality of Light; the realm of God. Microcosm is its reflection; a fragmentation of Light; the world of human existence and human ego. The core of the Hermetic Teachings for centuries has been focused on transforming the fragmented body of Light in human consciousness and uniting below with above.
