Book excerpt: Similar to neighbouring Southeast Asian countries, Indonesia is, simultaneously, infamous for its prevailing sex tourism economy, sex industry and sex trafficking activities. On 6 December 2022, Indonesia's parliament passed the criminal code to criminalize extramarital sex. The anti-extramarital sex legalization was established to help reinforce Indonesia’s, following Islamic Law, stance of disallowing sexual behaviours beyond marital relationships. Those who engage in extramarital sex, per the criminal code, are sentenced to up to a year in prison. This book responds to Indonesia’s latest legislation that passed the criminal code of criminalizing any act of extramarital sex. The formation of the arguments made in this book is based on the premise that, by criminalizing extramarital sex, the Indonesian government aims to, in part, crack down on the local prostitution industry to minimize any act of, child or not, sexual exploitation, prostitution and sex trafficking. The book presents how cracking down on the local or regional (i.e., Southeast Asian) prostitution industry cannot be accomplished by simply taking legislative actions. The book examines and analyses how sex work is socio-economically and institutionally constructed. This book presents the underlying unequal power of relations in Indonesian society that facilitates sexual exploitation, especially against disadvantaged children and women. The highlights of this book are the policymaking discourse on how local Indonesian policymakers should respond to such an unequal power of relations and the prevalence of sex work. The book, moreover, visits the anti-extramarital sex legislation in order to explain how the Indonesian government should endeavour to crack down on its domestic sex industry in order to uphold the values of human rights and lower the prevalence of the practice of commercial sex.

Book Synopsis Sex and Sexualities in Contemporary Indonesia by : Linda Rae Bennett

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2015 Ruth Benedict Prize for Outstanding Edited Volume Sex, sexuality and sexual relationships are hotly debated in Indonesia, triggering complex and often passionate responses. This innovative volume explores these issues in a variety of ways. It highlights historical and newer forms of sexual diversity, as well as the social responses they provoke. It critiques differing representations of sexuality, pointing to the multiplicity of discourses within which sexuality and ‘the sexual’ are understood in modern-day Indonesia. Placing sexuality centre-stage and locating it within the specific historical context of the Reformasi era, this landmark volume explores understandings and practices across a wide variety of sites, focusing in on a diverse group of Indonesian actors, and the contested meanings that sexuality carries. Beginning with a substantive introduction and concluding with a scholarly reflection on key issues, the volume is framed around the four themes of sexual politics, health, diversity and representations. It seeks both to present new empirical findings as well as to add to existing theoretical analysis. This work fills an important gap in our understanding of the evolution and contemporary dynamics of Indonesian sexualities. It will be of interest to scholars and academics from disciplines including gender and sexuality studies, global health, sexual and reproductive health, anthropology, sociology and Asian studies.

Book Synopsis Women and the State in Modern Indonesia by : Susan Blackburn
Download or read book Women and the State in Modern Indonesia written by Susan Blackburn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first study of the kind, Susan Blackburn examines how Indonesian women have engaged with the state since they began to organise a century ago. Voices from the women's movement resound in these pages, posing demands such as education for girls and reform of marriage laws. The state, for its part, is shown attempting to control women. The book investigates the outcomes of these mutual claims and the power of the state and the women's movement in improving women's lives. It also questions the effects on women of recent changes to the state, such as Indonesia's transition to democracy and the election of its first female president. The wider context is important. On some issues, like reproductive health, international institutions have been influential and as the largest Islamic society in the world, Indonesia offers special insights into the role of religion in shaping relations between women and the state.

Download or read book Sex and Islam in Indonesia written by Jack Falworth and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Devout Muslims in Indonesia are currently waging a political campaign to outlaw all sexual activity outside the bounds of legally sanctioned marriage. Citing the holy Koran as their authority, they want to stamp out prostitution, adultery, sexual promiscuity, premarital sex, homosexuality and pornography. The ultimate aim of the devout Muslims is to transform Indonesia into a Islamic caliphate that enforces sharia law and punishes all those who dare to question the supreme authority of the Koran.Jack Falworth's latest book is a carefully researched study of the above campaign to impose Islam's strict moral code upon the Indonesian population. The topics covered in his book include: (a) Closure of official brothel complexes throughout Indonesia; (b) Vigilante action by the Islamic Defenders Front; (c) Enforcement of Sharia Law in Aceh Province; and (d) Submission of a Bill to outlaw sex outside marriage. As well as describing the activities of the devout Muslims, the book also describes the strong opposition that these activities have encountered among more liberal-minded Indonesians.
Book Synopsis Prostitution and Sex Work by : Melissa Hope Ditmore
Download or read book Prostitution and Sex Work written by Melissa Hope Ditmore and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating overview of prostitution and sex work in the United States, from the Colonial era to today, examines the issue as it affects men, women, and transgender individuals of all races and classes. Prostitution and Sex Work is the first book since 1921 to offer a historic overview of this controversial topic—and what our views on it say about American society. Exploring key people, places, and events, the guide includes descriptions of the myriad variations of the sale of sex and of the venues where prostitution occurs, as well as recurring themes such as panics about sexually transmitted diseases and the ever-present issue of violence in the sex trade. After reviewing the history of prostitution and sex work over the past 400 years, the book offers detailed information about the legal context of prostitution in America during the last century. It focuses particularly on the period since prostitution was criminalized during a panic over "white slavery" in the early 20th century, drawing parallels with current "sex trafficking" topics. An appendix of materials produced by sex workers is especially informative for those wishing to truly understand both sides of the issue.
